Good morning:
There are storm warnings for many parts of Newfoundland today and tonight and high wind warnings.

It seems the Avalon will escape heavy snowfall accumulations, but this area will experience high winds.

First, here's a map of the province and Enviroment Canada's warnings for winter storm conditions and wind.

It's about -11 Celsius in St. John's this morning, pretty chilly out there, but conditions look pretty good and we're expected to actually see some sunshine today.

Snow or ice pellets changing to rain are forecast near midnight, then flurries overnight. Environment Canada is forecasting snow and ice pellet amounts of 5 cm and rainfall amounts of 5 mm.

There may be some blowing snow over exposed areas early this evening.

Here's the Environment Canada weather graphic for St. John's-metro and then I'll get back to the wind and storm warnings for the whole province.

Now, here's what Environment Canada says about the storm and wind warnings.

A deepening low pressure system just southwest of Nova Scotia will track northeastward across Central Newfoundland tonight. Snow and blowing snow associated with this system will develop over Southwestern Newfoundland near noon and spread to the remainder of the island by this evening.

In St. John's-metro and the Avalon region, southeasterly winds, gusting between 80 and 100 km/h are expected to develop this evening then switch to westerly, gusting between 110 and 130 km/h overnight or Thursday morning.

For regions under a winter storm warning, snowfall accumulations will range between 15 centimetres for eastern areas to near 40 centimetres for western regions by Thursday morning.

In addition, strong southeasterly winds gusting up to 100 km/h will develop ahead of the storm and shift to strong northwesterly winds gusting up to 110 km/h overnight. The fresh snowfall and strong winds will cause poor visibilities in blowing snow.

For regions under wind warnings, strong southeasterly winds will develop early this evening ahead of this system with gusts up to 100 km/h expected along the South Coast and gusts to 130 km/h in the Wreckhouse area.

Winds will switch to westerly overnight with gusts ranging from 110 km/h along the South Coast to 130 km/h for the Southern Avalon. The extreme wind speeds expected over the next 36 hours for the South Coast and Avalon Peninsula are not unheard of for Newfoundland however they are potentially damaging so it would be adviseable to take appropriate precautions.

Higher than normal water levels are expected during the high tide Thursday morning between Green Bay and Cape Freels so minor coastal flooding is possible. However damage to coastal infrastructure is not expected at this time.

On the Bell Island-Portugal Cove ferry service this morning, both vessels, the Norcon Galatea and Flanders, are operating. That must be good news for commuters until the winds pick up tonight.

There are not too many traffic Tweets this morning.

There seems to be fairly good driving conditions around St. John's-metro, although there could be some slippery patches with the cold temperatures. Drivers should be careful.

And, speaking of interactions, our website has attracted a lot of readers since yesterday's story by Tara Bradbury and photos by Keith Gosse and Tara of Pamela Anderson's visit to St. John's.

She was here to offer our sealers a $1-million cheque to retire from the sealing industry.

The best part of it had to be Mark Critch showing up with his own offer of $1 million for Anderson to quit acting. Critch said he did it because his blood 'boiled' over the ignorance about the Newfoundland seal hunt.

The story and video is on The Telegram website. Here's a link.

Another story that's been getting a lot of attention last week and this week is one written in 2011 by Barb Sweet about Dana Bradley's murder 32 years ago in December, 1981.

I checked in with the RCMP and found they received two new tips in recent days. The RCMP says the investigation has never been closed and all tips are welcomed.

Here's a link to a story I wrote about this.

The story I mentioned above drew a lot of comments too. This one below, in particular, really touched me.

I remember when Dana was murdered and how it affected everyone in the province. I hope, too, that justice will be done for her family.

Here's that comment. You might need to dry your eyes after reading it. So nice to know there are so many kind people out there, despite the evil forces.

I wake up today to find myself crying after looking at Dana s picture in the Telegram. I was the same age as Dana... just a young boy on the way to developing into a young man. Dana was my first crush. She was always so nice to me. She had a heart of gold.. My heart was ripped in half when I heard the news that some heartless, gutless coward murdered her. There is not a day that goes by that I don't think of her. My god...it s thirty two years later. I still hope that the low life that did this would come forward and do the right thing or that the authorities would catch up to him. To the monster that did this...I hope you have lived a life of internal torture. I hope you rot in hell for what you done to Dana. She didn't deserve to be stolen away from her family and this life.
