Wednesday October 3, 2012 7:56 Lisa Daly
7:57
Steve Bartlett:
Thanks for logging on and telling us an air tragedy near Stephenville 66 years ago today.
Why is this disaster important to you?
Wednesday October 3, 2012 7:57 Steve Bartlett
7:57
Lisa Daly:
It is important because it has been forgotten.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 7:57 Lisa Daly
7:58
Steve Bartlett:
Can you tell me a little bit about the crash?
Wednesday October 3, 2012 7:58 Steve Bartlett
7:58
Lisa Daly:
We have a rich aviation history here in Newfoundland and Labrador, and so many tragic, but important moments in that history have been lost over the years, and I would like to see them remembered and memorialized.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 7:58 Lisa Daly
7:58
Lisa Daly:
Certainly, this was a commercial flight, mostly wives and their children flying overseas to meet their husbands stationed in Germany.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 7:58 Lisa Daly
7:59
Lisa Daly:
It was diverted to Stephenville airfield due to poor weather in Gander, and upon takeoff to fly overseas, had to change runways.

Steve Bartlett:
Thirty-nine people died in the crash. How were they remembered and how have they been forgotten?
Wednesday October 3, 2012 7:59 Steve Bartlett
7:59
Lisa Daly:
Moments after takeoff, the aircraft struck the site of a hill, known now as Crash Hill, killing all on board.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 7:59 Lisa Daly
8:00
Lisa Daly:
At first a memorial cemetery was set up at the top of the hill, something that can be seen from the air so the families of the deceased could fly overhead.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:00 Lisa Daly
8:01
Lisa Daly:
But that cemetery has fallen in to disrepair, all of the crosses have fallen down.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:01 Lisa Daly

Lisa Daly:

8:02
Lisa Daly:
There is no maintenance to the site. And although many people in the area known that there is a plane crash on crash hill, they don't know the tragedy of it or the details of the event.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:02 Lisa Daly
8:02
Steve Bartlett:
So, you hiked to the site this summer. What was that like?
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:02 Steve Bartlett
8:02
Lisa Daly:
Difficult.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:02 Lisa Daly
8:02
Lisa Daly:
It is a challenging hike, very steep, and no trail.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:02 Lisa Daly
8:02
Steve Bartlett:
Emotionally? Physically?
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:02 Steve Bartlett
8:03
Lisa Daly:
Physically, and all of the crash sites I have worked on are emotionally difficult. Any where people died in the accident.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:03 Lisa Daly
8:03
Steve Bartlett:
What do you find at the site?
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:03 Steve Bartlett
8:03
Lisa Daly:
This one is particularly emotionally difficult knowing that they were civilians and many of them children.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:03 Lisa Daly
8:04
Lisa Daly:
We found most of the aircraft. It is under a lot of loose debris because they dynamited the site to try to cover the aircraft. But we found large pieces of the wings and fuselage, most of the engines, and rare finds like the co-pilot's control panel and navigational equipment.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:04 Lisa Daly
8:05
Lisa Daly:
Later, Dave Hebbard and Don Cormier revisited the site and found where they had buried the bodies of those who died in the crash.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:05 Lisa Daly
8:05
Steve Bartlett:
Can you describe the state of the memorial site?
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:05 Steve Bartlett
8:06
Lisa Daly:
I, personally, have not been to the memorial site, but I have been shown pictures taken by Dave Hebbard.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:06 Lisa Daly
8:06
Lisa Daly:
The large monument (that was flown in days after the crash) is still there.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:06 Lisa Daly
8:06
Steve Bartlett:
So it's in disrepair. What would you like to see done about it?
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:06 Steve Bartlett
8:06
Lisa Daly:
But the crosses, each of which carried the name of a victim, have fallen over and some of the name plates have been lost.

Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:07
8:07
Lisa Daly:
I would like to see if repaired, and see if there is some way to arrange to have it cared for.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:07 Lisa Daly
8:07
Lisa Daly:
Going to the example in Gander of the Sabena crash, the site of that crash is well cared for and maintained. It would be nice to arrange something similar in Stephenville.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:07 Lisa Daly
8:08
Steve Bartlett:
Who is the right organization to take that on? Will you be approaching them?
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:08 Steve Bartlett
8:08
Lisa Daly:
Myself and Dave have been talking to Don Cormier and some of his colleagues, and I believe they would be the right place to start about maintaining the site.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:08 Lisa Daly
8:09
Lisa Daly:
The problem we have is trying to find some way to repair the site. So I am looking in to who I would contact about that to try to arrange for funds to fix up the site.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:09 Lisa Daly
8:09
Lisa Daly:
So once I know the right organization, I will be approaching them about this site.

Might there be any interest in the States, since it the passengers and airline were Americans?

8:11
Steve Bartlett:
Can you tell me a little more about your group, the Historic Aviation Committee?
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:11 Steve Bartlett
8:12
Lisa Daly:
We are a group of aviation enthusiasts from varying backgrounds (archaeology, photography, history, aviation), whose goal is to discover, record and share the aviation history of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:12 Lisa Daly
8:12
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:12
8:13
Steve Bartlett:
What other kinds of things are you currently working on?
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:13 Steve Bartlett
8:13
Lisa Daly:
As a group, we have been involved in a number of archaeological investigations and recoveries around the province, such as in Goose Bay, a number of sites in Gander, and this one in Stephenville.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:13 Lisa Daly
8:13
Lisa Daly:
But currently I, as part of the group, am finishing up my thesis about a number of WWII crashes in Gander.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:13 Lisa Daly
8:14
Lisa Daly:
And as a group we are working on this Stephenville site and on a documentary about the Hindenburg over Newfoundland.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:14 Lisa Daly
8:14
Steve Bartlett:
Were there a lot of crashes on the island?
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:14 Steve Bartlett
8:15
Lisa Daly:
There are. Especially World War II era crashes. Almost all aircraft that flew overseas during the war stopped to refuel in Newfoundland or Labrador.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:15 Lisa Daly
8:15
Lisa Daly:
So with thousands of aircraft flying through, there were accidents, and many of them were in remote locations, so the remains of the aircraft are still there.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:15 Lisa Daly
8:16
Steve Bartlett:
And this one in Stephenville was, at the time, the worst in commercial aviation history. Why has it been all-but forgotten?
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:16 Steve Bartlett
8:17
Lisa Daly:
It is interesting that this one has been forgotten when the Sabena in Gander is very much remembered. They happened at about the same time (the Sabena just weeks before this one), but in this case, everyone died. There was no dramatic rescue that lasted weeks. There were a couple of newspaper articles and then the site was forgotten.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:17 Lisa Daly
8:17
Lisa Daly:
Except by those who worked on it.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:17 Lisa Daly
8:17
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:17
8:18
Lisa Daly:
It was a difficult job for the recovery teams, and many of the men who helped recover and bury the bodies never spoke of the incident.

8:18
Steve Bartlett:

Why is the NunatuKavut council upset?
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:35 Steve Bartlett
8:36
Ashley Fitzpatrick:
The NuntuKavut council has been filing objections to the Muskrat Falls development for some time now (right back to the joint review panel and earlier). They feel their concerns are not being addressed.

Nalcor says the proper permits have been obtained and procedures followed. In fact, there's no evidence that shows they haven't done just that. NunatuKavut has pointed to some potential violations of the Fisheries Act, etc, but none of that has been proven at this point.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:38 Ashley Fitzpatrick

Ashley Fitzpatrick:
If this is the first time you have seen any of the construction, particularly if you are from the HVGB area, it might have been a surprise. But overall, considering the photos made available following the media tour of the site, it shouldn't really have been a shock.
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:39 Ashley Fitzpatrick
8:41
Steve Bartlett:
So where do you think this story is going?
Wednesday October 3, 2012 8:41 Steve Bartlett
8:44
Ashley Fitzpatrick:
If NunatuKavut files a legal objection to the work at the site, or if they take action on their allegations of violations of Acts- this goes into the legal world. That said, Nalcor is moving ahead and not much more work left to do at the site before decision time for the province...
