Now, for the weather, it seems the St. John’s-metro area didn’t get as much snow accumulation overnight than other parts of the province, but the big weather news in this region today is high winds.

Environment Canada is warning of wind gusts of between 100 and 130 km/h this morning for St. John’s and vicinity and the southern Avalon. The southwest coast will also see high winds up to about 100 km/h.

Some areas of the province are still under a winter storm warning. I’ll include the map showing all areas in a minute.
But, first here’s the wind warning from Environment Canada:

Westerly winds gusting between 100 and 130 km/h will develop this morning.

This is a warning that potentially damaging winds are expected or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..listen for updated statements.

A deepening low pressure system over the Northeast Coast of Newfoundland will move offshore today.

For regions under a winter storm warning, additional snowfall today will not be significant. However, it will be accompanied by strong westerly winds gusting from 80 to 100 km/h which will cause poor visibilities in blowing snow later this morning.

For regions under wind warnings, strong westerly winds with gusts ranging from 100 km/h along the Southwest Coast to 130 km/h for the Southern Avalon are expected to develop this morning. The extreme wind speeds expected today for the South Coast and Avalon Peninsula are not unheard of for Newfoundland however they are potentially damaging so it would be advisable to take appropriate precautions. Also these strong winds will be accompanied by flurries, which will cause reduced visibilities in blowing snow at times.

Higher than normal water levels are expected during the high tide this morning between Green Bay and Cape Freels so minor coastal flooding is possible. However damage to coastal infrastructure is not expected at this time.

Here's an excerpt from the winter storm warnings from Environment Canada for Bay of Exploits, Bonavista North, the Gander region, Green Bay and White Bay.

Strong winds and blowing snow are expected to continue or redevelop this morning.

This is a warning that dangerous winter weather conditions are expected or occurring in these regions.

There are also blowing snow warnings today for the Northern Peninsula and Red Bay to L'anse au Clair.

I just received a comment from a reader in Scotland where the winds are gusting high there too. Wow, 144 km/h. You would think winds this strong would be classified as hurricane winds.

If I had one of those huge trail groomers to clear my driveway, I wouldn't mind getting a lot of snow either. But the raindrops last night was music to my ears and a welcome sound for my sore shoulders.
