Good morning:
Before getting into the weather this morning, I believe most people in the St. John's-metro region were shocked last night to learn of a shooting in Conception Bay South.

The Telegram's Dan MacEachern and photographer Rhonda Hayward headed to Villa Nova Plaza in Long Pond last night after covering St. John's City Council.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has confirmed that two people are dead, but have released few other details.

Dan spoke last night with the owner of the medical clinic in the plaza and he said the shooting occurred in the medical clinic.

Here's a link to the latest story The Telegram has on this.

The RNC said in a release this morning that it will be providing further details to the media at a later time, so I assume there will be a media briefing today with media relations officer Const. Talia Murphy.
Wednesday October 16, 2013 7:04
Twitter was abuzz last night over the shooting and people living in the area were advised by police, directing traffic away from the scene, to stay home and lock their doors while a manhunt took place to find the shooter.

There's no word this morning on whether a suspect has been located or if people should unlock their doors and venture outside. After that kind of advice, you would expect some update this morning.

Above are just a few Tweets from last night. People on Twitter appear shocked that something like this would happen in Newfoundland.

I think it's time politicians stop telling tourists that they're perfectly safe when they visit here. That might have been true 20 years ago, but crime seems to be on the rise here.

Funny thing, I recall local politicians 20 years or more ago, attending all sorts of conferences in oil-rich countries to learn about how to prevent a spike in crime during an oil and gas boom here. It now looks like it was a waste of time and taxpayers dollars.

The Telegram will be staying on top of this story today will be posting updates on our website as we get them, so stay tuned for that.

Now, on to the weather.
It's about 5 degrees Celsius in St. John's-metro this morning and we may see some sun today. The forecast is calling for a high of 8 Celsius.

Here's a look at the weather graphic from Environment Canada and longer text version of the forecast.

Some traffic Tweets above. The one about the hitchhiker is interesting. I doubt that anyone will pick him up, knowing the police have been searching for someone who shot and killed two people last night in C.B.S.

On my drive to work this morning I saw a lone woman jogging in the dark before 6 a.m. along Cornwall Avenue. I don't know if she heard the news last night, but I don't think I'd be out jogging this morning, walking or doing anything else in the dark, except driving with my doors locked.

C.B.S. is not far from St. John's and if you committed a serious crime there, you're probably not going to stick around there for long.

The Harper government's throne speech will be delivered today and it's expected to contain some talk about unbundling TV packages by service providers.

Here's an excerpt from a Canadian Press story:

Pick-and-pay cable pricing could mean end of some channels: industry insiders

By Terry Pedwell
The Canadian Press — Ottawa
Forcing cable and satellite TV providers to offer pick-and-pay pricing could result in some television channels disappearing, and likely won’t mean lower prices for consumers, say industry insiders.

Industry Minister James Moore says the Harper government’s throne speech today will outline plans to mandate an unbundling of TV offerings.

The Conservatives are expected to instruct Canada’s broadcast regulator to require that cable and satellite TV service providers offer a form of a-la-carte pricing, where consumers can choose to pay for individual channels.
The move will be “evolutionary” for Canada’s broadcast sector, say industry watchers who see pick-and-pay as a necessity with broadcasters trying to compete with increasingly popular online services, including Netflix.

But content producers and independent specialty channel operators are running scared.
“We’re very worried,” says a television executive who did not want to be identified.
“Potentially every broadcaster, at least initially, would be worse off” under pick-and-pay, he said.
It’s also likely to spark a war among broadcasters and service providers and will certainly mean a ramping up of marketing by the cable and satellite companies to convince customers to stay with bundled packages.
There are already hints of the battles that lay ahead.
Cable companies will demand more “flexible” pricing from the television networks that supply the programming, an executive with Rogers told The Canadian Press.

If there is more flexibility, consumers, producers and the distribution companies will all benefit, said Rogers vice-president Kenneth Engelhart.
“I’m optimistic that we can have pick-and-pay, we can have a valuable service and we can have Canadian content,” said Engelhart.
“I believe we can have it all.”
Shaw Communications, which has strongly opposed pick-and-pay, declined to comment Tuesday when asked about the pitfalls of such a pricing model.

Some channels rarely watched by viewers will certainly disappear as a pick-and-pay system comes into place, said Michael Hennessy, president and CEO of the Canadian Media Production Association.

The Telegram's Steve Bartlett is going to join me in a minute this morning for a live exchange.

Steve lives in Topsail and can talk about the mood this morning after the news of the shooting in Long Pond last night that killed two people.

I noticed this morning that there was next to no traffic on Pitts Memorial around 6 a.m. when I was heading to work.

Yes, Deana, things are pretty slow in Topsail this morning. What normally is a busy area around Topsail Elementary is eerily quiet.

How was the traffic this morning? Many people on the move after being told to stay home last night?

The traffic was non-existent on the main road. It's never that slow, particularly just after 8 pm.

I noticed the same thing, where I live in St. John's and have a great view of the Southside and Pitts Memorial Highway. I saw one lone car drive up the highway before I left my house.

Around St. John's, there was little traffic as well.

The mood last night was really tense. I played hockey and arrived home at 11:30ish. My wife was still awake and the kids were stirring. The cops had been buzzing around my house with lights flashing for some time. The phone never stopped. Not something I expected on our quiet road.
