Good morning:

It's 2 degrees Celsius in St. John's this morning, and the big weather story today is that high winds are headed our way in Newfoundland.

Environment Canada has issued a warning that strong southeasterly winds, gusting to 100 km/h or higher are expected tonight and Thursday. Along parts of the coast, the winds could reach 130 km/h and in the Wreckhouse area on the province's west coast, there are warnings of up to 170 km/h winds.

If you're planning on travelling on the highways, it's wise to stay updated on the weather warnings and stay off the roads during those high winds. You'll most likely be blown off them anyway if you venture out into 170 km/h winds.

There are also rainfall warnings for southwestern parts of the island. Environment Canada says amounts of 60 to 100 mm are anticipated over Southwestern Newfoundland from Channel-Port aux Basques to Ramea before tapering off late Thursday.

In some parts of Labrador, snowfall warnings have also been issued, including the Churchill Falls area, Hopedale, Nain and Labraodr west.

Below is an Environment Canada map showing in red the areas where warnings have been issued.

The wind warnings for Newfoundland have even prompted a Google public alert on the web.

Wind warning for St. John's and vicinity issued

Strong south to southeasterly winds gusting to 100 km/h or stronger are expected tonight and Thursday.

This is a warning that potentially damaging winds are expected in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..listen for updated statements.

A low pressure system now over New Jersey will continue to intensify as it tracks up the Eastern Seaboard today, reaching Western Labrador as an intense winter storm by Thursday morning. The low will continue northeastward through the day on Thursday and an associated cold frontal trough will push eastward across Newfoundland.

Southeasterly winds will begin strengthening over southwestern parts of the island this afternoon and will continue to increase through the evening, with gusts forecast to reach 170 km/h or higher in the Wreckhouse area later tonight through Thursday morning. Strong winds will also spread up the west coast and Northern Peninsula during the night with gusts reaching 100 km/h in many areas and locally as high as 130 km/h along the parts of the coast prone to enhanced southeasterlies. The strong winds will spread from west to east across the remainder of the island on Thursday but will start subside over Western Newfoundland in the afternoon.

The strong winds will produce high waves and pounding surf along the entire South Coast of Newfoundland on Thursday.

In addition to the wind, heavy rain is expected to develop over southwestern parts of the island later today. Amounts of 60 to 100 millimetres are anticipated over Southwestern Newfoundland from Channel-Port aux Basques to Ramea before tapering off late Thursday.

There are some interesting posts on Twitter. Some people are wondering why Confederation Building is glowing purple at night.

Isn't blue and red the primary colours that make purple? Maybe it has something to do with the Liberal win last night in Carbonear-Harbour Grace. The Liberal red is spilling out over the Tory blue.

Here's one photo posted on Twitter.
