Yep. You can make a good case that Girardi should have pinch-hit four different times in the ninth inning last night - for Nunez and Gardner vs Verlander (with Swisher), and for Ichiro (with A-Rod) vs Coke, and then obviously for Ibanez (with Swisher or A-Rod, but my preference would have been Swisher).

With Mike Zunino and Jesus Montero around, should the Seattle Mariners explore trading high on John Jaso? Or do executives around baseball undervalue Jaso, as your USSM column suggested? Or is a lefthanded bat at that position too valuable to the Mariners?
Wednesday October 17, 2012 12:10 fungus
12:11
Dave Cameron:
Montero's not a catcher, so his presence shouldn't really have anything to do with Jaso. Zunino is probably going to spend most of the year in the minors, so there's no crunch yet. Let Jaso establish himself as a regular catcher, then deal with it in 12 months if Zunino has forced your hand.

How big is the window in which a player might be worth a 10-year contract? Old enough that he's shown he can be great, but not so old that he won't be producing at the end. (I know some teams, like the Yankees, are prepared to pay for a few years of underproduction in order to stack their lineups).

The idea that a contract is supposed to still be a good deal at the end is silly. You overpay at the back to get value at the front. It's just how contracts work, for everyone, not just the Yankees.

Regarding pinch hitting ARod last night.... I wondered if Joe G decided it was better with Ibanez against a lefty than ARod against a righty. Thoughts?

You wonder why people think you are biased against Miguel Cabrera, and then you assert that Votto "has a far better approach" at the plate than Miggy. Seriously? "Far better"? It may be slightly better, but it's certainly not "far better". Your irrational hatred for Cabrera is skewing your judgment here.

You're Mike Rizzo. Who plays first base next year, and is Morse in LF?

If Mike Morse ever plays another inning of outfield, whatever team he's on has failed.

Joey Votto has hit 2 in-field fly balls in the last 3 years. He's a better hitter than [insert name here]

Miguel Cabrera is great. I have nothing against him and enjoy watching him hit. It's not a critique to say that he's not as good a hitter as Joey Votto (no one is) or that he had a worse season than Mike Trout (everyone else did too).
