Obviously Nunez hit a HR, but isn't there a decent case that he should have been PH for also?

Dave Cameron:
Yep. You can make a good case that Girardi should have pinch-hit four different times in the ninth inning last night - for Nunez and Gardner vs Verlander (with Swisher), and for Ichiro (with A-Rod) vs Coke, and then obviously for Ibanez (with Swisher or A-Rod, but my preference would have been Swisher).

Recent heroics, yes. Media scorn - not more than any other human would. I don't think Joe's afraid of the media.

Neither. You're looking more for a change-up strikeout/groundball guy. I'd say more Doug Fister.

I haven't seen Rosenthal start, so I don't know how much his stuff will scale back once he's in the rotation. But, the fastball/curve obviously look legit.

Looking further over the numbers, looks like Granderson is getting the Josh Hamilton treatment, and is not able to adjust. Having not watched any Yankee September/October games, does this theory pass the eye test?

Granderson seems to have transformed into a guess hitter. He's taking fastballs down the middle, then chasing breaking balls at his feet.

One year of 29-year-old Boston outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury at about $10 million for one year of 28-year-old San Francisco righthanded starter Tim Lincecum at $22 million. Who hangs up first? Is the trade feasible if money changes hands?

Not at the price they'll be asking, most likely. More interested in OFs. Easier to find an OF who can move to first if need be than vice versa.

With Mike Zunino and Jesus Montero around, should the Seattle Mariners explore trading high on John Jaso? Or do executives around baseball undervalue Jaso, as your USSM column suggested? Or is a lefthanded bat at that position too valuable to the Mariners?
Wednesday October 17, 2012 12:10 fungus
12:11
Dave Cameron:
Montero's not a catcher, so his presence shouldn't really have anything to do with Jaso. Zunino is probably going to spend most of the year in the minors, so there's no crunch yet. Let Jaso establish himself as a regular catcher, then deal with it in 12 months if Zunino has forced your hand.

The Yanks bring in Cody Ross to fill the Andruw Jones role? Or will some team sign Ross to be full-time? Assuming Ichiro and Swisher won't return, a full-time bat is a likely add, as well, no?

How big is the window in which a player might be worth a 10-year contract? Old enough that he's shown he can be great, but not so old that he won't be producing at the end. (I know some teams, like the Yankees, are prepared to pay for a few years of underproduction in order to stack their lineups).
Wednesday October 17, 2012 12:12 JT
12:13
Dave Cameron:
The idea that a contract is supposed to still be a good deal at the end is silly. You overpay at the back to get value at the front. It's just how contracts work, for everyone, not just the Yankees.

2/9 or 2/18? Ichiro probably isn't taking the first one. And, it's hard to see him in Detroit, honestly. I think he signs with a team on a coast.
