Things are changing very rapidly right now. I've heard lots of reports of water on roadways, but few reports of total, formal closures. One of them is Scenic 61 at Larsmont. If anyone knows of others, please post
Tuesday June 19, 2012 9:08
9:11
The News Tribune's Mike Creger just got back to Duluth from Two Harbors; here's his account of what he saw:

At about 8 p.m., Scenic Highway 61 was closed in Larsmont as water rushed over the road. Even the roadway on the higher Highway 61 Expressway had water standing on it south and east of Two Harbors as water rushed from streams and off rock faces. The Knife River ran high and brown.

In Duluth, Superior Street was impassable at 8:40 just before it met the expressway as small rapids formed in about a foot of water. The street was covered entirely by up to six inches of water throughout most of Lakeside and at street crossings at higher elevations in Congdon Park. In some areas along Superior Street, water spouted through manhole covers out of storm water mains.

If 61 is closed north of Two Harbors, that bodes poorly for the one alternate - County Road 3. Someone from up there can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure that's going to be in terrible shape, too
Tuesday June 19, 2012 10:28

Expected? Not sure. Possible, yes

11:13
But we're not supposed to see much severe wind from here on out, so that will be one less threat to power lines

E-mail me at akrueger@duluthnews.com, or type a comment here (I'll get the number, but I won't approve it for posting for all to see)

Was just told by Duluth Public Works employee that over 60 manhole covers have blown off and have turned into geysers. Storm runoff across the alley from the co-op is overflowing massive amounts of water and washing out roads and foundations.
