A winter storm warning is in effect for all of Newfoundland.

Environment Canada is forecasting heavy snow and high winds with blowing snow tonight through to Monday. Total snowfall accumulations of 15 to 35 centimetres are expected by Monday evening.

This is a warning that dangerous winter weather conditions are expected or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..listen for updated statements.

A low pressure system just southwest of Nova Scotia is expected to intensify as it approaches Newfoundland tonight. Snow at times heavy ahead of this system has begun over Southwestern Newfoundland and will spread northeastward across the island this evening. Heavy snow will move offshore before morning, but periods of snow in the wake of the low will persist over the island though Monday. East of the Burin and Bonavista peninsulas, snow will change over to rain for a period of time overnight and early Monday. For all regions under a winter storm warning, 15 to 35 centimetres of snow are forecast by Monday evening.

In addition, strong southeasterly to northeasterly winds will develop across Newfoundland tonight. These winds will combine with freshly fallen snow to produce blowing snow and reduce visibilities across the entire island tonight. Blowing snow will persist into Monday northwest of the Burin and Bonavista peninsulas.

Winds will be particularly strong over coastal regions of Southern Newfoundland, where gusts to 110 km/h are expected to develop this evening, and in the Wreckhouse area, where gusts to 130 km/h are expected during the same timeframe.

A significant storm surge is associated with this system, but it is not expected to have an impact as it occurs during low tide. However, high seas and pounding surf conditions are expected along southern portions of the Avalon and Burin peninsulas overnight tonight and early Monday morning.
