Happy Holidays Sam! Ok..so it's been a pleasure to see the Cavs (via the Lakers) in all the headlines and leading stories among sports media, something that is unheard of these days. It's understood that the Lakers are struggling and I think they will be fine by playoff time. With that said, the talk is still ONLY about what the Lakers did wrong...What about what the CAVS did RIGHT? Kyrie's game is obvious, but did anything else stick out to you from last night? This was a much needed morale booster for the team and us as fans.

Sam Amico:
Good comment/question. I was impressed with all five starters last night -- even Tristan, who grabbed 10 rebounds and provided some energy. For all the talk of Kobe and Kyrie (and CJ Miles' fantastic game), people tend to forget about Alonzo Gee's big threes, Andy's 20 points and 9 rebounds and HUGE J in the final minute, Tristan's 10 rebounds .... it was a team effort in the truest sense.

Sorry, hit return there. No, Dion is the starter. That's why they drafted him. He has already done what CJ's done. CJ just needs to do that off the bench.

Sam Amico:
That's a mess Sammie. I've been told two different things by two different teams and the league won't answer. But Lakers will make playoffs. They have Kobe and Dwight Howard. They have to.

Where you as big of fan as me of the Z, Kemp, Cedric Henderson, Wesley Person, Brevin Knight Cavs? I don't know why I thought of that team but I liked them. After that playoff team it was years of bad until you know who got here.

Good comment, Curt. Interestingly, I was living in Wyoming at the time, following the Jazz and Nuggets. It was the only time I wasn't real sure what was happening with the Cavs.

In reality, how close is Waiters to returning?

Sam Amico:
I think he's close. I see him at practice. He's running with the trainers. He could probably play now. But as Byron Scott said last night, why rush it? Make sure he's 100 percent. Last thing you want is for him to come back too soon, then have the injury flare up again.

I know it's still ridiculous to think the Lakers wouldn't make the playoffs, but was Kyrie's return last night to beat the Lakers too convenient when we consider we'll likely have their 2013 1st rounder?

12:16
Sam Amico:
Yes, if they want, and here's why: The Central Division stinks, and overall, the East ain't great. I still think there are three spots up for grabs ... and a 34-win season will get you in.

Could be. What's important is that they keep competing like they have been without Kyrie. Now that he's back, you should be able to pull off some of those close games.

Sam Amico:
Because they are human beings (so I sometimes forgive them) and mostly, because no one really thinks the Lakers are going to miss the playoffs, so they don't put any thought into it.
Wednesday December 12, 2012 12:22 Sam Amico
12:22
Sam Amico:
I'm with the latter group. Mostly, I think Clevelanders need to stop constantly worrying about draft picks all the time. That will be nice.

[Comment From ChrisChris: ]
Long-range thinking type of question here. I know the Cavaliers are going young this season (and the previous two seasons) but there is a fine line they're walking here as this is looking like season 3 in the lottery. At some point, you need to start winning games or you become the Sacramento Kings. That being said, when do the Cavaliers start adding needed veterans vs. rookies to help them get to a playoff level? As we've seen with C.J. Miles, there is an adjustment period to new teams so I'm thinking the sooner the Cavs start adding some veterans the better as I'd like to avoid season 4 in the lottery if possible.
Wednesday December 12, 2012 12:22 Chris
12:24
Sam Amico:
Good comments. I don't think they have any plans to add any vets this season. They have a plan, they're sticking to it, and it involves young players and a couple movable assets. My guess is the real playoff push comes next season -- which, in my opinion, is only season 3 of the plan. The year after LBJ left was an absolute wash.

[Comment From RobertNeroRobertNero: ]
Everyone says we are modeling ourselves after OKC, the problem is OKC is literally a once in a life time model. Getting to draft Durant, hitting on westbrook and harden and Ibaka all had to deal with OKC getting things to work out perfect. That being said, I dont see the Cavs as having the same success with drafting so far, (other than kyrie). So why dont people talk about another model like say CHicago? they hit it with the number one pick, added key role/starters in Noah, Gibson, Deng and signed a big free agent in Boozer (some people dont like it, but he hasnt been bad for them) could you see the cavs doing something like this? We have a stock pile of picks and could add some more at the deadline, and we can only have cap space for so long, these rookies will need their contracts extended eventually and I only see Kyrie being worth their max contract of 5 yr 80 mil. Why dont the cavs look into (not saying they do, and not saying there is a lot out there) to add a guy while we have cap space to fit him in... could be within the next 2-3 years with our cap situation. Sorry I know that was really long

minnesota looks to have given up on derrick williams. before the draft that netted kyrie and tristan thompson, the cavs were linked to williams very heavily, and he has fallen out of favor with the timberwolves. would the cavs be interested in making a call or do they feel tristan has the higher upside? would a change of scenery help both players?
Wednesday December 12, 2012 12:25 gregor
12:25
Sam Amico:
Eh, I wouldn't make that trade. I still think Tristan can become something. Williams is two years into his career and we still have no idea which forward spot suits him best.

I like keeping Gee in the starting lineup. He can guard SFs, SGs, PGs in a pinch. Miles needs to bring that scoring and energy in a reserve role. That's what Byron wants!

Getting way ahead of myself here but, ignoring who is actually on the board because we don't know yet, what position do you see the Cavs targeting in this years draft? Or will it simply be best available that isn't a pure PG?
Wednesday December 12, 2012 12:29 Curt

Probably small forward. Maybe shooting guard. They still need to get stronger at the wing.

[Comment From BenBen: ]
Is there still a debate on whether the Cavs made the right choice with Tristan? I'm under the impression that Jonas V didn't want to play here and there's really been no breakout stars better than TT from that draft class unless you consider Faried/Leonard/Klay Thompson, who were all drafted outside of the top ten.
Wednesday December 12, 2012 12:30 Ben
12:31
Sam Amico:
There will always be debate. But the people who were going nuts over Jonas V sure are quiet now. I think Jonas V will be a nice player. He's not going to change the world. Neither will Tristan. But I think they will have similar careers.

why are Cavs fan on impatient? I think we've been spoiled a lil before this year are last 2 lottery picks were HOME RUNS (Bron,Kyrie) and we dont get that it takes time for rookies to learn the game get use to the speed get use to NOT getting calls to become truly effective everybody's not going to come in the Kyrie or Lillard and just play like they been in the league for years some people just dont get it...all they want to do is complain when a rookie doesn't come out avg 18-20 pts a game let players develop first..it just really kils me Sam.

Chandler's minutes are a career low and trending downward. Imagine they aren't that in love

Well, I asked their GM two days ago if Chandler is available. He said no. But sure, possibility exists that he was lying.

Did you see the rumors this morning that Lakers are possibly looking at Delonte? He could be a nice stopgap at pg and still useful bench player when Nash comes back if he keeps his head straight. Can veteran Lakers keep him in check?

I can't answer that one, Sammie. He has a disorder. It's clearly tough to manage and other teams have failed. So ... it's a risk.

I've heard of CJ Leslie from NC State. Never have seen him play, probably never will until he gets to the NBA (or a major NCAA tournament run).

What is the best package you've heard discussed in a possible trade for Varejao? Any offers that are worth dealing Andy for?

From fans? Yes. From people within the league? No. But honestly DJ, I don't write or mention pretend trades too much, because then someone tweets out, "Sam Amico says the Cavs are thinking of making this trade ..." Once that fire starts, there's no way to put it out.

He could play center, small forward, too. Could you imagine a frontline of Love, Pekovic and Bargnani? Make other teams matchup with you.

Speaking of pregame shows, put in a word with the league office that League pass needs to quit chopping so much pre/post game. All we get is AC and Fred :/ and i wont bash them b/c I learned from last time...
