[Comment From Kevin JCKevin JC: ]
Brad Paisley mentioned some of his band looking to marry a "Newfie" girl at the Saturday night concert, and was met with loud applause. I don't like the term but it is all about the way it is used. Obviously he didn't used it in a derogative manner and likely didn't know there was any controversy about it. Otherwise, I am sure that he would not have said it, for risk of alienating some of his audience.
Monday September 23, 2013 7:56 Kevin JC
Some people do use the word in a non-derogatory manner, but I think it's the derogatory use of the term in the past that angers many Newfoundlanders.

My father was a U.S. serviceman and the term "Yanks" was used a lot when I was growing up to describe Americans. I never liked that term either, but I know many people here respected the Americans and their contributions to the province.

Brendan McCarthy has a story in today's Telegram about the IceCaps.

IceCaps training camp set to get underway

The Winnipeg Jets still have about a dozen cuts to make to get down to their 23-man limit before the 2013-14 National Hockey League season begins a week from now, and those cuts will likely make up about half the roster of the American Hockey League’s St. John’s IceCaps.
However, that doesn’t mean there won’t be a sufficient amount of players on hand as the IceCaps open up their third training camp today at Mile One Centre.
