Gerry Dulac's Steelers chat: 8.10.11

Gerry Dulac:
For a change, the sun is shining, the humidity is low and it's not raining at training camp. We'll start our chat shortly so get those questions ready.

Gerry, are Steelers just low-balling potential free agent receivers and tight ends or are they seeing that these individuals aren't the "rght fit"?
Wednesday August 10, 2011 1:27 Nate

Gerry Dulac:
A little of both, and by that I mean the Steelers have specific roles for these players and the players either don't like the roles or the money being offered in conjunction with those roles. The Steelers weren't going to pay a lot for Jerricho Cotchery because they wanted him as their fifth receiver. Cotchery thought he could find a more prominent role as a third receiver with another team, so he left. The Steelers offered former Bengals tight end Reggie Kelly the veteran minimum to come in and compete for the No. 2 tight end job, but he didn't want to play for the veteran minimum, He said he would rather stay retired.

There's a girl I like and I want to take her on a date to training camp before school starts back. Is there any romantic part of camp I might take her to?

Gerry, I was surprised that they signed Suisham to a 4yr deal given his age and how often kickers are released during the year. Was it for salary cap issues or do they really see him kicking for the next 4yrs?
Wednesday August 10, 2011 1:31 Nate

Gerry Dulac:
I agree, but I think it indicates what they think of Suisham, who was better than anyone imagined last year when he replaced Jeff Reed. He has been a proven, reliable kicker in his career, for the most part, and there aren't a lot of them around. But, who knows -- maybe his contract was striuctured in such a way that if he were released it wouldn't be a big deal.

Aside from a couple of mentions by Ed in PG Plus, this story was under reported last year, but the speical teams started strong then kind of sputtered at the end of the year. Do Steelers coaches share this concern and how are they addressing it?

They want us to report on it a little more.,

Gerry Dulac:
Actually, I don't know that they are concerned about it, but I'm sure they weren't happy with Brad Smith's kick return TD to start the game in the loss to the Jets. But, after the way they performed the year before, I thought they did a good job to vastly improve their coverage. If they improve that much this year, no return will get past the 10.

Willie Colon I am sure is happy about his new contract, but has it registered on anyone that Hartwig, Starks, and Kendall Simmons signed "long term" deals with the Steelers only to be cut a within a year or two?

I'm sure he isn't thinking about that when he is balancing his check book. That is the nature of the buisness.

Gerry, supposing that David Johnson wins the number two TE spot and Doug Legursky wins a starting guard spot, who then plays the role of lead blocker (aka full back) in the backfield?
Wednesday August 10, 2011 1:38 Steel Curtain Rising
1:39
Gerry Dulac:
David Johnson won't win the No. 2 spot because he isn't competing for the No. 2 spot. David Johnson is the H-back/fullback and the the coacxhes love him in that role, so they're not going to move him. So the winner of that lead blocker role will be .... drum roll, please....David Johnson. I still haven't figured out how he manages to do that and still anchor the Channel 11 news.

Gerry you've written that Chris Scott has been playing at guard. Was this move taken because of all of the shuffling, or do the coaches see him fitting in better a guard rather than tackle.
Wednesday August 10, 2011 1:39 Hombre De Acero
1:41
Gerry Dulac:
He's not only playing at guard, he is playing very well at guard, and will likely be the starter on the right side when the regular season opens. Scott can play right tackle, but the coaches love his size (6-5, 340) and toughness to use next to Willie Colon.

Do you see Weslye Saunders making the team?

Gerry Dulac:
It's going to be tough because it's hard to have a rookie be the No. 2 tight end -- a role that would find him on the field a lot in Bruce Arians' offense, That's why they've been looking at veteran free-agent tight ends. But it's not inconceivable.

Do you agree with Ed that all the Steeler draft picks could make the team?
Wednesday August 10, 2011 1:43 Guest

Gerry Dulac:
Without question. The only iffy one is guard Keith Williams, the sixth-round pick. The rookie who might be the biggest contributor is RB Baron Batch, the seventh-round pick. The rookie who could be the steal of the draft is OLB Chris Carter of Fresno State, their fifdth-round pick. He's super quick and relentless on the outside. He just needs to get a little bigger.

Word is that Tomlin issued a challenge to Jason Worilds. How is Worilds responding?
Wednesday August 10, 2011 1:46 Hombre De Acero

Gerry Dulac:
Tomlin challenges all his rookies, especially the ones he likes. Worilds has been good. He's bigger and stronger, but like a lot of guys going from their first year to the second, he could have used the offseason training acitivites and workouts with the coaches to hasten his development,

Who is your "sleeper" draft pick or undrafted free agent?
Wednesday August 10, 2011 1:48 Bruce

Gerry Dulac:
Bruce, as I mentioned earlier, that would be fifth-round pick Chris Carter, who was a defensive end at Fresno State. He has been converted to outside linebackers and gets everyone's attention with his quickness of the edge. Sleeper? Steal? Whatever you want to call him, he's that.

Gerry, we've heard good things about Keenan Lewis in camp thus far, but then again we heard those things this time last year. What are the coaches saying and what is your take?
Wednesday August 10, 2011 1:50 Steel Curtain Rising
1:52
Gerry Dulac:
I don't know who's saying those good things, unless it's the same person who said good things about Bruce Davis. Keenan Lewis is on his last leg with the Steelers. If he doesn't show something this year, if he can't show that he deserves to play ahead of Bryant McFadden and William Gay, then his tenure with the team won't last past 2011.

Gerry, if Jonathan Dwyer gets cut, as eveyone thinks he will, does Tomlin give him a second chance on the practice squad?
Wednesday August 10, 2011 1:52 Hombre De Acero
1:53
Gerry Dulac:
That is always a possiiblity. Right now the four backs are Mendenhall, Redman, Moore and Batch. They won't keep five because Dwyer contributes nothing on special teams.

As somebody that's been rooting for Limas Sweed, I'm starting to give up. Does he not understand this is his last chance to make this team?

Gerry Dulac:
Welcome to the club Mike. You are not alone. There are team members already in line ahead of you. Let me say this -- I like Limas. He's a hard worker who often stays after practice.. He's has great physical skills and talent. But, as a coach once said to me about Sweed, "The game is too big for him." This is his last chance, and "chance" is a very generous word.

Gerry, there have been multiple articles and blogs about signing Timmons or Troy. Do you have any idea how realistic this topic could become or is it just creating some buzz for readers?
Wednesday August 10, 2011 1:58 Nate

Gerry Dulac:
Well, i think the debate centers not on which one should be re-signed, but on which one should be re-signed first. Both players will be re-signed by the Steelers; it's just not clear when. The whole situation with the lockout and CBA has the Steelers preoccupied with trying to sign free-agents and complete their roster for this year. They will get to Timmons and Polamalu eventually.
