Red Sox vs. Yankees Opening Day Live Cha...
Welcome to MassLive's online coverage of Boston Red Sox baseball. It is opening day 2013 and the Red Sox and Yankees are resuming one of sports greatest rivalries.

I'll be here to provide feedback, answer questions and offer insight throughout today's game.

First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 PM
Monday April 1, 2013 12:48
The starting lineups are already announced. The Yankees public address system was nice enough to play various Star Wars themes during the intros of each team.

Evil Empire music was played for the Red Sox, while the Yanks got the Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, heroic rebels music.

Wishful thinking Yankees...
Monday April 1, 2013 12:52
Both teams are honoring the victims of the Newtown massacre with ribbons and the ribbon is painted on the playing field as well.
Monday April 1, 2013 12:55
No fly over. I'm going home. #openingday
Monday April 1, 2013 12:59 EvanDrellich
No fly over and an anthem that some on twitter were unimpressed with. Maybe the Yanks spent all their petty cash on Vernon Wells?
Monday April 1, 2013 1:01
There was one. It's called the 12:50 p.m. Delta Shuttle RT @EvanDrellich: No fly over. I'm going home. #openingday
Monday April 1, 2013 1:01 DPLennon
In NYC I've got YES Network Coverage of today's game. The intro had a dark feel to it, lamenting the inevitable retirement of Mariano Rivera and urging fans to soak in every last appearance by him this season.

No mention of the team's aspirations or injuries.
Monday April 1, 2013 1:04
First pitch is coming up.

Who do you think will have a better season? C.C. Sabathia or Jon Lester?
Monday April 1, 2013 1:07
Lou Pinella to throw out first pitch, no announcement about whether or not he will play some left field for the Yanks this season.
Monday April 1, 2013 1:08
It will be interesting to hear what Michael Kay and David Cone say about Bradley Jr.
Monday April 1, 2013 1:09
Monday April 1, 2013 1:10 redsoxmonster
A little pop up from Jacoby Ellsbury to shortstop, and the #RedSox season is underway at Yankee Stadium
Monday April 1, 2013 1:11 EvanDrellich
Sabathia looks fresh, he looked run-down late last season and was terrible against the Tigers in the ALCS.
Monday April 1, 2013 1:13
With Ortiz hurt, Pedroia's bat becomes even more important.
Monday April 1, 2013 1:14
Dustin Pedroia lines 1-0 pitch up the middle for first Red Sox hit of 2013, with two out off CC Sabathia #redsox
Monday April 1, 2013 1:15 EvanDrellich
Sabathia's off-speed pitches have confused both Victorino and Napoli
Monday April 1, 2013 1:16
No flyover and Napoli's K's with Pedroia on base. I hope @EvanDrellich is still at Yankee Stadium
Monday April 1, 2013 1:18 redsoxmonster
Not since Lester returned from lymphoma have I been this interested in seeing him pitch.

Really interested in seeing if he's in 2010 form or 2012 form
Monday April 1, 2013 1:19
Lester kept the ball down, get Gardner to swing at two pitches outside the zone. Nice way to start the season.
Monday April 1, 2013 1:21
Those who are in this chat:

What are your predictions for Lester this season? How many wins? How many K's? What will be his E.R.A.?
Monday April 1, 2013 1:22
Youk in pinstripes vs the Red Sox. Who would have thought?
Monday April 1, 2013 1:25
No question. Have to go back before '90s dynasty RT @ed_kubosiak Is this the worst Opening Day Yankee lineup in recent memory?
Monday April 1, 2013 1:26 EvanDrellich
@EvanDrellich @ed_kubosiak Where have you gone Danny Tartabull?
Monday April 1, 2013 1:31 redsoxmonster
The play that Jason Nix just made at third was one that neither Youk or A-Rod would have automatically made.
Monday April 1, 2013 1:32
Sabathia has 2 K's already. Salty could be number 3
Monday April 1, 2013 1:33
David Ortiz, in current state, can go faster than the Yankee Stadium press-box internet.
Monday April 1, 2013 1:34 EvanDrellich
@EvanDrellich They've got to cut costs somewhere! #Yankees
Monday April 1, 2013 1:35 redsoxmonster
Look who is up with runners on base...
Monday April 1, 2013 1:35
Kay and Cone, both impressed with Bradley Jr.
Monday April 1, 2013 1:36
In his major league debut, Jackie Bradley Jr. could have been rung up on 1-2. Was down 0-2. Works it back to full count and draws walk.
Monday April 1, 2013 1:38 EvanDrellich
Bradley works a walk after falling behind 0-2. Really impressive.
Monday April 1, 2013 1:38
No Jeter, no problem? Nunez couldn't get Bradley on the force at second and the Red sox are up 1-0 on Iglesias RBI infield single.
Monday April 1, 2013 1:39
Jose Iglesias reaches on infield single, Jackie Bradley Jr. beats Nunez throw from hole to 2B. Sox up 1-0. Bases still loaded for Ells
Monday April 1, 2013 1:39 EvanDrellich
I'm officially not used to the "Youk" chant in Yankee Stadium.
Monday April 1, 2013 1:40
Sabathia up to 40 pitches, Red Sox up 3-0, and 2012 feels like the past.
Monday April 1, 2013 1:42
Jackie Bradley's WAR is already 12.
Monday April 1, 2013 1:42 brianmacp
Shane Victorino two-run single, two on, two out for Pedroia and Sox lead 3-0
Monday April 1, 2013 1:42 EvanDrellich
Monday April 1, 2013 1:42 redsoxmonster
Pedey brings another home, another hard hit and Boston leads 4-0. Sabathia's at 43 pitches through five outs. #RedSox
Monday April 1, 2013 1:44 EvanDrellich
This is just like 2012....except not at all. Sabathia is laboring, his fastball hasn't been clocked at much higher than 91.
Monday April 1, 2013 1:44
Cone comparing Pedroia's approach at the plate to Jeter's
Monday April 1, 2013 1:44
Cone not happy with C.C.

Fastball hasn't had enough velocity to make off-speed stuff effective.
Monday April 1, 2013 1:47
Walk to Bradley in the 2nd was huge. It loaded the bases which made it tough for Sabathia to pitch around Iglesias who will swing at pitches out of the zone.

His infield single was hit with decent contact and that opened the floodgates.
Monday April 1, 2013 1:49
Former Red Sox top prospect Anthony Rizzo has gone deep in his first at-bat of 2013. It's 2-0 Cubs
Monday April 1, 2013 1:50
Two years ago, the Yankees bet Alfredo Aceves wouldn't be healthy. That's a bet the Red Sox have won…
Monday April 1, 2013 1:51 EvanDrellich
David Cone on Jackie Bradley Jr's first major league at-bat.

"Great first major league at-bat"
Monday April 1, 2013 1:51
Sox may win, Sox may lose. Doesn't change the fact that the Yanks lineup looks like the waiver wire in my fantasy league in 2011.
Monday April 1, 2013 1:52 FitzyGFY
Looking back, Alfredo Aceves called Yankees offer of only a minor league deal before 2011 unfair… #redsox
Monday April 1, 2013 1:53 EvanDrellich
Ichiro still gets down the line with enough speed that he's tough to double-up. #Yankees
Monday April 1, 2013 1:53 redsoxmonster
Lester hasn't been able to get hitters to swing at his curve today. He's just missing with it.
