FAU vs. ULM(05/23/2008)
9:34
Good evening denizens of Owl Country.

First night game of the Belt, and starting a little late, even though New Orelans mercy-ruled South Alabama in the previous game, 14-4.

That means Middle, Troy and USA are all gone, as will the loser of FAU vs. ULM.

The pitching matchup tonight is FAU's Mike Gipson (4-2, 6.10 ERA) vs. ULM's Drew Graham (2-4, 6.83).

Talked to Cooney earlier todayh, and he said Gipson, a freshmen, has good stuff but has a propensity to leave the ball high and give up a lot of home runs. But Tigue Moore Stadium has a lot of room, so Cooney is comfortable going with him.
Friday May 23, 2008 9:36
9:38
Cooney also explained how they pick a home team (FAU is home for this game). First game is based on seeding, second based on who was home and visitor in first game, and third, if both teams have been equal in home or visitor, is coin toss.
 Cooney won the toss.
Friday May 23, 2008 9:38
9:41
Cooney said the team slept in, wandered over to a mall for lunch, slept some more, and basically kicked back.
Cooney and the coaches watched WKU beat ULL, so they had a chance to scout. The winner of tonight's game will have to beat the Hilltoppers twice tomorrow to get to the championship game.
In the other bracket, New Orleans will have to beat host ULL twice.

That's Morrison in the pic. Like I said, i talked to Cooney about 7 p.m., and they were heading out to eat and then to DP, and it was Gipson at the time.
I know Cooney has a lot of confidence in Morrison, though he sat for a month with a slight injury, and has just had one appearnce since the Miami game.
He is 2-2 with a 6.00 ERA and has made just five starts.

fau is at bat. Looks like they got ulm out in 3.
Friday May 23, 2008 9:46 jt

I meant BP.
They have an indoor facility at ULL (Cooney couldn't resist a dig at his soon to be former employer "Like everyone else in the conference but us"). It is primarily for football, but has cages for the softball and baseball teams, so teams are taking BP there. "It's humid, but at least you are out of the sun," Cooney said.

Arata grounded out. So we are all caught up.
Friday May 23, 2008 9:50
9:52
Base hit, Griffiths to third. Silversmith up.
Friday May 23, 2008 9:52
9:54
Cooney said the moved Silversmith to cleanup yesterday. Nice move, since he hit that grand slam.
Silversmith is hitting .353, and has been very reliable, which is why they put him there, not for the long ball but because he could drive in the guys in front of him.
Friday May 23, 2008 9:54
9:56
Starting Morrison still intrigues me. Cooney has never been afraid to gamble, and this is one. I would imagine Gipson will be the one to come out of the pen if Morrison gets in trouble early.

Friday May 23, 2008 9:56

Morrison is a lefty. Not a real hard thrower, but a nice curve, and looks like he is using it on about every pitch tonight.

But he hits first battter. One on, no out.
Friday May 23, 2008 10:01
10:02
ULM used four pitchers in their earlier game today, so if FAU can get to their pen, they might be able to do some damage.
Friday May 23, 2008 10:02
10:03
Cooney said it was a huge break to have to only play one today.

Hate to say it, but Morrison does not look sharp. Throwing a lot of pitches, now self-inflicted wounds of hit batter and walk.
Friday May 23, 2008 10:06
