So who's the most likely veteran receiver out of luck if Adrian Arrington cracks the final roster?

Mike Triplett, T-P:

Good question to start with since I think Arrington stole the show this morning. He laid out for a 45-yard diving catch from Tyler Palko after beating cornerback Greg Fassitt down the left sideline, and he made another nice downfield grab on a pass from Palko that somehow made it past safety Chris Reis’ arms.

Arrington said he dropped one ball when he slipped today, but he was definitely pleased with his debut. He’s really got a chance to make this team, though there’s a huge crowd in front of him.

Mike Triplett, T-P:

Hey Miguel, we must be related. … I actually don’t know the answer to your question, but as soon as they do, I bet you’ll see them popping up all over the Superdome. I really do think this guy will be a fan favorite, at least in his first year. He’s an emotional, fiery guy who will really inject some excitement into this team. Yeah, he has a history of complaining when times are tough, but the Saints are hoping that won’t be a problem anytime soon.

Payton is obviously excited he's here. His new teammates seem equally energized. There was a cool moment today when Brees and Shockey were walking and laughing as they got to know each other on the way to the locker room after practice.

So far, so good for Deuce. He participated in every drill this morning, though he’ll probably take it easy this afternoon. And everyone keeps raving about how good he looks at a slim, trim 227 pounds. Brees joked that he’s back to his senior-year-in-college weight. … Deuce has really seemed optimistic in the last couple months. I know I’m pulling for him.

Mike Triplett, T-P:

This is by far the hardest position to get a handle on. Jason David and Randall Gay ran with the first team today while Mike McKenzie is taking it slow in his recovery from knee surgery. Jason Craft and Usama Young ran with the 2s. Aaron Glenn was with the third team. And rookie Tracy Porter isn’t here yet.

Nobody really stood out today, for better or worse, but I think it’s a good sign for Young that he’s with the second string for now. He’s the real wild-card of the bunch. I’m curious to see how he looks after getting a full year under his belt since he was such a raw athlete last year. I’m also very curious to see if David can hold off Gay for the second starting job. And who knows where Porter fits in. I’m sure we’ll be updating this battle daily throughout cmap.

Mike Triplett, T-P:
A quick follow up, since I just noticed someone asked me to predict the starting secondary. ... I'll guess McKenzie and Gay at corner for now, though I do think Jason David will be a lot more confident and consistent this year. ... I think Kevin Kaesviharn will edge Josh Bullocks as the starting safety alongside Roman Harper. ... But obviously we'll learn a lot more about all these guys in the coming weeks.

Mike Triplett, T-P:

It really doesn’t sound good right now. Not many first-round picks have signed throughout the league, and both GMs and agents aren’t optimistic that will change anytime soon. They really seem further apart than anytime in the recent past, and Mickey Loomis was pretty outspoken the other day saying that he thinks the agents are being unreasonable in their expectations.

Ellis, especially, could take a little while. He doesn’t necessarily have to wait until Glenn Dorsey gets his deal done, but that will certainly help. I would have expected Porter to be here by now, so maybe that can be sorted out within a few days.

Meachem caught my eye once today when he caught a strike from Brees on an out route against the right sideline in 7-on-7 drills. He almost made a great grab on an overthrown ball during team drills. I didn’t notice any drops or mistakes. … The thing that stands out most with Meachem is he’s so much more confident this year and seems to be enjoying himself. He really got down last year when he performed below his own expectations and struggled with the knee injury. He’s been a really determined guy this offseason, and I’m anxious to see him in some preseason games.

You can’t really appreciate Reggie Bush’s unique talents during these early training camp practices, because the team isn’t in full pads, and nobody gets tackled. But he always stands out as the fastest guy on the field. … I’m definitely one of the few remaining Bush believers. I was so impressed by what he did over the final few months of his rookie year, and I think last year was a combination of him underachieving, him getting hurt, and him getting stuck in the wrong role after Deuce went down. … Like Meachem, he’s really been determined to make up for the humbling experience of last season. I bet we’ll be writing about his first 35-yard run during the first preseason game in Arizona.

Mike Triplett, T-P:
That's the only problem I see with Arrington's chances of making this team. He's a similar type of receiver to Colston and Meachem. ... Obviously, the Saints will keep their most talented guys. But I'm confident David Patten will be back this year, which means that Meachem, Arrington and Devery Henderson are all essentially battling for that No. 3 receiver spot.

The No. 4 and 5 receivers typically need to be big-time assets on special teams. So far in their college and pro careers, neither Henderson nor Meachem nor Arrington has done much on special teams. That's why you can't rule out Lance Moore and Terrance Copper in this very crowded, very compelling position battle.

Unfortunately, Thomas seemed to have a rough day. He went down to his knee about two hours into practice and the trainers cooled him off. Then he sat out the rest of the morning session. ... I don't think it's too bad of a sign. The heat was no joke on Day One, and Hollis is a big dude even when he's in shape. And he did make his weight yesterday for the first time in three years. He's proven in the past that he can get through this rough stretch and be productive in the regular season.

Vilma looked very good. I mentioned that play when he tore through the offensive line to get to Thomas. His speed and athleticism has really stood out during minicamp and OTA practices, and he's "full speed ahead" in his recovery from last year's knee surgery.

It's even harder to tell how good the offensive linemen look when the players aren't going at full speed, but it's always fun to watch them in the individual pass-rush blocking drills. A guy who stood out to me today is second-year tackle Jermon Bushrod. He lined up at left tackle with the second team, and he held off Will Smith during one impressive 1-on-1 drill. He's a big dude who's very athletic for his size. I think the Saints are excited about his potential.

Nicks ran with the third team today after signing his contract yesterday. He's behind the more experienced Tim Duckworth for now, but that could change. ... I think the transition will be smooth with Goodwin at center. He's really well respected in the locker room, and he's been playing with all these guys for three years now.

Mike Triplett, T-P:
A couple defensive-line items I noticed today:

-Grant definitely looked slimmer than he did last season. I think part of that is that he's recovered from an ankle injury, but mostly it's a new commitment to his diet and conditioning.

-Pressley had a really impressive, fast spin move during those pass-rush drills, though it came against third-string offensive lineman Isaiah Ross.

-McCray immediately stands out every time the team takes the field because he's so tall and and athletic and plays at such a high speed. We'll obviously learn a lot more about his ability in the exhibition games when he faces a live defense.

-Kendrick Clancy lined up ahead of Hollis Thomas as the first-string nose tackle. That happened last summer, too, and Thomas eventually regained the job. It might become a moot point if Ellis ever shows up.

-I didn't notice anything good or bad from Smith, but I think he's the team's best defensive player, and I think he'll be back to his usual production levels this year because the Saints have added so much help around him.

How does Devery Henderson look? Is he safe?
Thursday July 24, 2008 1:46 Dave
1:48
Mike Triplett, T-P:
Like I said before, he's definitely not safe because of the numbers crunch, because he doesn't do much on special teams, and because of the emergence of Meachem and Arrington.

But I'll never rule Henderson out, because he continues to win that No. 3 receiver job year after year. I think the coaches really like that added dimension he brings as a downfield threat, which forces defense to respect that threat. His problem has always been with consistently catching the ball, especially on the short routes. But he always seems to do well in camp.

If the coaches don't think Meachem or Arrington is ready to be better than Henderson from Week 1, they won't beat him out based solely on potential.

Mike Triplett, T-P:
That's a great question -- one I'm gonna try to make sure and ask myself each day out here. ... I'd probably say Pressley, because I literally had to look at the roster to figure out who No. 90 was after he made that nice spin move in the pass rush drills. ... Other guys stood out more than him, guys like Arrington and Vilma and Bushrod. But that was a case where I wasn't sure who I was looking at when the play happened.

I also had to figure out who Greg Fassitt was after he got beat on back-to-back passing plays. That's never a good sign, but to be fair, he might have been playing great the rest of the day.

Thursday July 24, 2008 1:52 Brad

Mike Triplett, T-P:
I think Johnson's in trouble, unfortunately, because he's one of my favorite guys in the locker room. The Saints could definitely wind up keeping four tight ends on the roster, especially since they usually go with just one fullback. But Johnson's specialty was pass-catching, and Shockey fills that role. Both Mark Campbell and Billy Miller are better blockers than Johnson. ... It really hurts Johnson that he's been battling this nagging ankle injury for months.

I haven't been able to dig that one up, but like Payton said, it wasn't a lineman. Maybe it was injury-related?

Drew Brees said today that everybody made weight, but he's always putting an extra-positive spin on things.

Speaking of Brees, I noticed a question earlier in this chat that disappeared from the list about how Brees gets taken for granted with all these other storylines getting talked about. I couldn't agree more. ... Brees is by far the best player on this team, one of the best players in this league, and the single biggest reason why this team is a legit Super Bowl threat.

I've talked to players off the record about him before, and they all say he truly is the kind of guy behind the scenes that he is in front of the cameras -- a too good-to-be-true leader and tireless worker who everyone seems to have a great deal of respect for.

Have I showered him with enough praise?

How much trouble will DT Ellis have learning the playbook in time assuming he gets signed next week?

Well, Ellis was able to participate throughout the OTAs and two minicamps this summer, so he should have a decent grasp of the playbook. Right now, they're going through everything for the second time.

But it really is tough for rookies to come in ad play catch up, because they're the ones who need all these practices the most. I think it's crazy that these negotiations always take this long. It ends up hurting the player and the team every year. It's a system that needs to be fixed.
