Many TUAW readers are pretty unhappy. Mike writes: Prior to arriving I went to att.com/iphone and made sure I was "iReady" which is AT&Ts stupid jargon for whether or not you can get a new iPhone. I was iReady.

So I'm outside in line since 6:30 am... at 9:30 I get an iPhone in my hands.

Two minutes later it was gone. The system rejected it and didn't say why. AT&T customer service is clueless as to why it didn't work. Supposedly it would have worked at AT&T... but they're completely sold out in my area.

No one can help and now I'm short 3 hours of my morning and still without a phone.

Arrived at AT&T in Orem, Utah at 6:10 a.m. About 300 people already in line. AT&T staff very vague on how many phones they had, but said it would take 15 minutes to activate each customer phone and they can activate eight at a time.

Our local AT&T store reps, came out and told us 2 hours ago (8:50a Eastern) , that activation servers are down at apple, however you want a new phone, they will enter the information and give you the phone so that we can "Direct" update when we get home.

I just got home with my iPhone 3G and the activation did take a long time. However, the iTunes loading bar was still going when my iPhone showed a "Welcome to AT&T" text saying that it was activated. It makes calls fine. I thought it was weird but apparently it activated but didn't show us.

I installed 2.0 on my iPhone 1G ands it's effectively bricked. iTunes complains about error -9838, presumably during activation. Digging in with a packet analyzer shows the SSL server albert.apple.com is responding with an error code. A word to the wise: do NOT upgrade your iPhone/iTouch's firmware until you get an all clear that Apple has resolved this problem. Incredibly unprofessional in my book. I have no idea who would be gullible enough to buy MobileMe given Apple's well-demonstrated inability to maintain uptime on .Mac...

Went to AT&T store in NJ, waited on line for 3.5 hours. The first shipment sold out in about an hour, and we waited a half-hour for the UPS/FedEx truck to arrive. Sales rep said they weren't getting any 16 GB until "next Tuesday or Wednesday" and we could sign up to have them hold one. I left.

If you're one of the unlucky ones to have started activating or getting iPod touch and then it died and now you have a phone with a "connect to itunes"' logo, you might try using ZiPhone to return your phone/touch to "normal mode", that saved me from having to completely restore my touch
