Liveblogging the Oscars(02/24/2008)

David Lee: OK, let's get started. I'm at the AIDS Survival Project Oscar Party at the Hotel InterContinental in Buckhead. It's the 20th year that Craig Streeter has hosted the event, and about 10th year he's donated the proceeds to the Project. He tells me they raise about $13,000, and there appear to be about 100 people for this. Some dolled up as nominated "characters," with Craig looking rather amoral and greedy as  Daniel Plainview. I filled out my Oscar ballot, hastily, with practically no hope of winning as this one really looks like a free-for-all. We'll be joined shortly by CL film critics Felicia Feaster and Curt Holman, with some other folks chipping in their chippy comments.
I thought this thing was starting right at 8 p.m., but Jon Stewart doesn't get quippy till 8:30 p.m. Unfortunately, the sound's a little spotty in this ballroom above the din of the crowd, so we'll hopefully be relying on Curt and Felicia for the more insightful observations on the acceptance speeches and Stewart witticisms.

David Lee: Good to have everyone here. A bit of housecleaning: We might be a bit slow on the posting of comments, hoping to make room for film critics' comments and also to work our respective rooms. So bear with us as we do this, which is our first time. (Always nervous the first time.) As for who's wearing what, unfortunately the TV set here is set to ABC so we had to hang with Barbara Walters and her guests. But I did catch Heidi Klum in what appeared to be a pretty stunning red Victorian-style gown.

FF: Ken I am so bad at predicting personal disappointment and it is inevitable with the Oscars. I prefer to wish and hope for what I want to win. If there's money on it, though, I try to guess.
Sunday February 24, 2008 8:11
8:12
Curt: All right, you mugs, what's goin' on? I just put my daughter to bed but she'll probably boomerang back in at least once. To answer Ken Foster, I try to predict what the Academy will honor -- which may not have any resemblance to the "best" contenders in the category. The Academy tends to go in predictable patterns, with occasional exceptions.

Sorry, Genevieve is screaming "oh my god!" about Rebecca Miller's (daughter of Arthur) horrifying dress.
Sunday February 24, 2008 8:15
8:16
Curt: Even though 'Juno' was my #12 film of 2007, I can see where the Juno backlash comes from. Every time I see a clip of the Rainn Wilson scene, with the 'Fertile Myrtle' lines, etc., part of me dies inside. (And I think Rainn Wilson is GREAT!) Once Garner and Bateman come into the movie, that agonizingly arch dialogue gets dialed back quite a bit. Incidentally, one of my Livejournal friends was quoted in the Slate.co. article on the Juno backlash
Sunday February 24, 2008 8:16

FF: Re: Miss Diaz: Too much flesh toned fashion. Unflattering. Have you noticed all of the mermaid dresses with plunging necklines?  Genevieve thinks the people who make that star-flesh tape must be raking in the dough.

Curt: I was *just* typing the name Clara Peller when David Lee's comment came up. BTW, David Lee, I can't tell if all the comments in the queue have already been posted. On February 1, 2008, Snipes was acquitted on the felony count of conspiracy to defraud the government and on the felony count of filing a false claim with the government. He was, however, found guilty on three misdemeanor counts of failing to file Federal income tax returns (and acquitted on three other "failure to file" charges). His co-defendants, Douglas P. Rosile and Eddie Ray Kahn, were convicted on the conspiracy and false claim charges in connection with the income tax refund claims filed for Snipes.[20][21] Following the guilty verdicts on the misdemeanor charges, Snipes faces a maximum possible three years in prison.[22] His sentencing is scheduled for April 24, 2008, at 9:30 a.m.

See, I liked deviations in the narrative, like where you have the rat tasting the food and experiencing all sorts of fantasia like effects. Of course I'm pals with the animator who did that sequence so I am biased. Bird should have done his acceptance in Pixar style it would have been faster.

David Lee: Adams' performance actually reminded me of a relative of mine from North Florida. Amazing.

Sunday February 24, 2008 9:06

Sunday February 24, 2008 9:07

9:18
Curt: Here's the best accidental movie connection ever. Anton Chingurh of No Country decides life vs. death at the flip of a coin, like the old Batman villain Two-Face. Two-Face was played in 'Batman Forever' by Tommy Lee Jones, who was the co-star of No Country. And Bardem gets it.

David Lee; Felicia, where else would you like to have seen "Into the Wild" nominated? I thought it got screwd for Best Song.

Sunday February 24, 2008 9:35

Curt: What the heck was that Spacey said years ago about the actresses doing for cinema what the Cheshire Cat did for Alice? Gave her confusing advice and then disappeared without a trace?

Curt: Supporting actress: TILDA! Awesome! Shameful confession -- I haven't seen 'I'm Not There.' She and the Atonement girls were my favorites in this category. And she mentions Batman and Robin! "You rock, man!"

Sunday February 24, 2008 9:40 Ken Foster

David Lee: She is the strangest looking kick-ass actress in Hollywood. I still can't define her looks. I loved her in "The Deep End."
Sunday February 24, 2008 9:40
