Australia v Japan

7:40
This is John Mack at the MCG ... welcome to our live coverage of the final World Cup qualifier between Australia and Japan.

There is still half an hour to the kick-off and by my estimate there are about **000 inside this brilliant stadium on what is an ideal night for football. The pitch looks perfect and there isn't a breath of wind.

Players from both teams are warming up on the ground.

We have just been given the starting line-ups and the two stories are that Josh Kennedy will start as a lone striker for the Socceroos and Rhys Williams will make his debut.

If there is only 10000 inside, then I am assuming there is an awful lot of people outside waiting to get in ? hopefully we do not suffer from the old, not enough gates open saga.
Wednesday June 17, 2009 7:47 Steve
7:49
It's filling up quickly now - probably about 20,000 now. It's gone up 10,000 in five minutes so at this rate there' ll be 320,000 by 8.20.

whats the atmostphere where does williams play his football?
Wednesday June 17, 2009 7:54 james
7:57
Hi James. The atmosphere is subdued because nothing is happening other than players from both sides all over the pitch warming up.
Rhys Wiliams has an interesting background. His mum is Indian, his Dad is English and he played a handful of matches for Wales under-21 before opting to throw in his lot with Australia.
He plays for Middlesbrough, who just got relegated from the Premeir League but spent most of last season on loan at Burnley, who, of course, just got promoted to the Premier League

If he was aggressively going for the win, you would have assumed he would have played 2 up front, and had MacDonald in the starting line up with Kennedy, so it seems a bit conservative to me
