2008 MLB Draft Live Blog(06/05/2008)
11:52
Welcome to the 2008 MLB Draft Live Blog! I hope you all will join me throughout the day for updates and analysis on all the selections.   My name is Frankie Piliere and I'll be hosting the blog all day long.
Thursday June 5, 2008 11:52
11:55
The first news of the day is of course Tim Beckham.   He will be the #1 pick.   But, the latest rumor we have is that Kansas City will likely choose Eric Hosmer as we have been expecting at #3.
Thursday June 5, 2008 11:55
11:59
Just as a reminder, I will take questions if there's time here and there throughout the day.   Or if someone has a good comment I will post that as well.   I'd like this to be somewhat interactive.

what do you think of the ethan martin kid from stephents county high school
Thursday June 5, 2008 12:01 Brian
12:02
Martin will probably go top 20.   The Dodgers are very high on him and it makes sense.   The Yankees love him and have worked him out but it seems doubtful he'll get that far.   I think he'll be a pitcher as a pro.
Thursday June 5, 2008 12:02
12:04
Some news on prep catcher Adrian Nieto.   The word is that the Nationals are hoping he makes it to #55.   If he does, chances are they pick him.

[Comment From steve from yellowstonesteve from yellowstone: ]
it seems that a lot of people are predicting the rangers to draft aaron crow suddenly. why would crow be falling that far and does he have a chance to fall that far?
Thursday June 5, 2008 12:08 steve from yellowstone
12:08
I really don't see that fall happening.   It would surprise me.   But stranger things have happened.   I still think Cole is the Rangers guy.
Thursday June 5, 2008 12:08
12:12
Some big news.   You hear it here first.   It appears that Pedro Alvarez to the Pirates at #2 is a done deal.   According to sources, they are set on the Vandy slugger.
Thursday June 5, 2008 12:12
12:14
And, to follow that, Hosmer (as already reported here) will be the number three pick.
Thursday June 5, 2008 12:14
12:17
Kyle Skipworth is going to be the Florida Marlins at #6.   He will sign for slot money.   That is not speculation folks, that's according to a couple good sources.
Thursday June 5, 2008 12:17
12:17
And Aaron Crow appears to be headed to Washington at #9.   I hope I'm not spoiling all the anticipation.   That's a near sure thing unless some surprises unfold.
Thursday June 5, 2008 12:17
12:18
Brian Matusz will be the #4 pick to the Baltimore Orioles.
Thursday June 5, 2008 12:18
12:19
[Comment From HazmatHazmat: ]
Who do you think the Giants will take with their pick? They have so many holes to fill it's hard to pick. Sabean also has a love for pitchers, and I feel it would be a bad idea at #5.
Thursday June 5, 2008 12:19 Hazmat
12:19
I think I may some news on that in a minute Hazmat.
Thursday June 5, 2008 12:19

[Comment From JJ: ]
Who are the Twins looking at?
Thursday June 5, 2008 12:19 J
12:20
I think they will pick Collier.   That's speculation though....the picks I've mentioned already are about done deals.
Thursday June 5, 2008 12:20
12:22
[Comment From JeremyJeremy: ]
Is the Jemile Weeks to Oakland rumor real? If so, is that a reach at 12?
Thursday June 5, 2008 12:22 Jeremy
12:22
I heard they like him but I'm skeptical on that one.   I think if Alonso is around here's their man
Thursday June 5, 2008 12:22
12:25
So let's recap what we have so far - Tim Beckham, Pedro Alvarez, Eric Hosmer, Brian Matusz will be the top 4 picks if my sources are correct.
Thursday June 5, 2008 12:25
12:26

Yankee fans, I'm going to say something right now and I don't want you to have heart attacks.   Boston fans too.   Buster Posey is trying to fall to the end of the round to get to those teams.

Thursday June 5, 2008 12:26
12:27
Just FYI also - I'm thrilled so many people are asking questions.   If I don't answer, I see them and will keep them in mind.

What about the Giants at #5 ???
Thursday June 5, 2008 12:28 Curt

Just talked to some people.   It will be a bat, probably not Posey.   Looks like Gordon Beckham,   I'm still fact finding one that one.

What about the Orioles?
Thursday June 5, 2008 12:30 Mary-Frances

It will be Matusz unless something radical changes.   Sounds like it's in the bag though.
Thursday June 5, 2008 12:30

Yankee fans, start your Posey watch.   This rumor is gaining steam.

Thursday June 5, 2008 12:32

Detroit has to be in on him I'd say.   Yankee fans, hold your breath on that pick.   I know they "stole" Porcello from you.

Is beckham really the choice for the giants? what about smoak?
Thursday June 5, 2008 12:48 Mike
12:48
Could be Smoak, but it sounds like they prefer Beckham.   We might not know until that pick actually goes down.
Thursday June 5, 2008 12:48
12:51
Just a reminder, check out Scout.com and all of their baseball sites.   You can find interviews and analysis on the draft picks.
Thursday June 5, 2008 12:51
12:52
So, let's review.   Here's what we know if the sources are correct: Beckham to TB, Alvarez to Pit., Hosmer to KC, Matusz to the O's, Skipworth to the Marlins, Crow to the Nationals.   Those later picks of course are pending on if anything unexpected happens.

Wow, this blog is getting big time.   An imposter?   Of course this is the REAL Peter Angelos.   I think, Peter, what they need to fix is these players with insane demands.

The Giants typically hold their draft choices close to the vest. Therefore, I don't see them taking G. Beckham. I think it's going to be Smoak....

Very strong chance but I think Washington is going to take Crow regardless

Thursday June 5, 2008 1:13
1:18
I'm getting some lovely feedback that I'm crazy about Posey falling.   Look, for one, is it really insane to think someone with 12 million dollar demands will fall?   And, second that's been the word and I can only report what I hear.   I just know there's at least a shot that he'll drop into the 20s.

Thursday June 5, 2008 1:23 Gil

[Comment From yankeeAZyankeeAZ: ]
I read somewhere that the Pirates pick might have a big influence on the rest of the draft because one of their decision makers used to be in charge of slotting for MLB. Do you think the Alvarez pick will throw the slotting system out the window this year?
Thursday June 5, 2008 1:29 yankeeAZ
1:30
I'd say thats fair to say.   Looks like it will be Alvarez so I guess we'll find out soon enough.
Thursday June 5, 2008 1:30
1:34
Here's an updated top 10 of what we think will go down: Tim Beckham, Pedro Alvarez, Eric Hosmer, Brian Matusz, Justin Smoak, Kyle Skipworth, Gordon Beckham, unsure on the Sox, Aaron Crow, unsure on the Astros.   The Giants and what they do is a major wildcard.   If they take Posey that could settle things down but I'm not sure they'll pay that.

I'd say Alvarez is that type of guy to be able to contibute next year.   Matusz could move up quick also.
Thursday June 5, 2008 1:38

It looks like Weeks or Hicks for the A's.   If GBeck is there by some miracle then they'll pick him.   I think Hicks might be their man.   So there you go A's fans.

Alvarez, Matusz definitely.   #5 is dicey, i'll say Smoak.   Then Skipworth, then Beckham
Thursday June 5, 2008 2:19

And it is.....
Thursday June 5, 2008 2:22

Thursday June 5, 2008 2:24 Adam

What's up Adam.   I think they're hoping Posey falls to them, but I'm sticking with Mike Montgomery, LHP, as their guy.

Yep.   I'm still a little surprised they don't go with Matusz, maybe they will.   But everything I've heard today points to Hosmer all the way.

Here comes the first very tricky pick.   It comes down to Beckham/Smoak/Posey.   I think it will be Beckham but that's a hunch.

Looks like it's going to be Smoak.
Thursday June 5, 2008 2:36

Thursday June 5, 2008 2:53 joe

Possible.   They do like him a lot.   This is what happens with one surprise pick.   It could create a domino effect and take Crow away from Washington.   Crow wasn't the pick in my mock though.   That's news just from today for your readers who were here all day

I'd like to tell you that but they better have some money to spend.   This is where the mock becomes a crapshoot.   Things will get random now.
Thursday June 5, 2008 3:02
3:03
For those using this as their primary pick by pick coverage, it has gone Beckham, Alvarez, Hosmer, Matusz, Posey, Skipworth, Alonso, Beckham, Crow

3:08

My mock said Alonso so obviously that isn't happening.   So I'll go with what I reported earlier.   Hicks or Weeks for Oakland.   For Texas, I am sticking with Cole.

Thursday June 5, 2008 3:08
3:10
Smoak for texas maybe?   They would definitely pay.
Thursday June 5, 2008 3:10
3:11
Well there goes Smoak.
Thursday June 5, 2008 3:11

They would have taken Cole.   This could open things for Cole to fall down to the big money teams.

Thursday June 5, 2008 3:19

This I'd say is the first huge surprise.   No one projected Wallace to STL

I should say Hunt or Cole but I won't.   I'll say Kelly.

I got a pretty good tip that Hunt will indeed go to Boston if Cleveland doesn't take him.

I preferred Kelly but how can you argue with picking this kind of arm.   Good work by them.

What kind of $ is Cole asking for? I'm assuming the Yankees will give it to him...

If Chisenhall didn't have the makeup issues he'd probably be a top 10.   I think the Indians did a great job.
