Do you think Cotto can knock out Margarito ?
Friday July 25, 2008 11:55 ACE
11:59
Yes, I do. Margarito has never been knocked out, but he hasn't fought anyone quite like Cotto.
Friday July 25, 2008 11:59
11:59
And what I like about Margarito is he won't dance, he'll fight Cotto for 12 rounds if he can, but I think Cotto has a pretty good chance of stopping him early.

MDS, you're one of the only sports writers I know who likes boxing and MMA. There are tons of old guys who hate MMA and tons of young guys who hate boxing, but hardly anyone likes both.
Friday July 25, 2008 12:00 Toby
12:00
I really like all forms of combat sports. I love MMA, I love boxing, I'm looking forward to watching judo, taekwondo and wrestling in the Olympics.
Friday July 25, 2008 12:00
12:01
I know some people who view MMA and boxing as sort of an either-or, but I've never really seen it that way at all. They're both great sports.

Manny pacquio, Kelly pavlik, Migual Cotto, or Joe Calzaghe ! Who is the best pound for pound ?
Friday July 25, 2008 12:02 ACE
12:03
Pacquiao is my No. 1 right now.
Friday July 25, 2008 12:03
12:03
If Cotto were just to completely dominate Margarito tomorrow night, he might get me to change my mind.

[Comment From Curtis WardCurtis Ward: ]
I agree, I believe conformists to "the fight sport" dont give MMA a chance, thinking that boxing is going down all together in a whole, but overall fight fans, who can appreciate the value of a standing alone in a game of will, love both MMA and boxing.

[Comment From ACEACE: ]
Besides a over the Hill Zab Judah and Shane mosley, who has Cotto fought ?
Friday July 25, 2008 12:06 ACE
12:07
A lot of people thought highly of Carlos Quintana until Cotto beat him in 2006.
Friday July 25, 2008 12:07
12:07
Although Paul Williams stopping Quintana in the first round last month might make Cotto's win seem a little less impressive.

I think Saturday night's EliteXC show is going to bomb.
Friday July 25, 2008 12:08 Mike
12:09
I think "bomb" might be overstating it, but certainly, it doesn't have anything close to the buzz of their previous show.
Friday July 25, 2008 12:09
12:09
The key is that they have to at least do a good enough rating that CBS is sure it wants to bring EliteXC back for the October show with Kimbo and Carano, and I think that will happen.

I think UFC is the only MMA promotion that really inspires any long-term confidence, but in the short term, EliteXC and Affliction are both going to give fans osme good shows.

Have you ever heard of CUNG LE MMA fighter ?
Friday July 25, 2008 12:12 ACE

Of course I have. I've written about him several times. Great kickboxer, no ground skills.

you are forgettin the WEC on Versus.. which provides serious lighter weight classes which brings skinnier guys who fight to the bone and whose conditioning is second to none
Friday July 25, 2008 12:12 Curtis Ward
12:13
No doubt, WEC has some excellent fighters. In my view, Urijah Faber vs. Mike Brown is going to be one of the best fights of the year.

If Cotto gets in trouble with Margarito, I see him going low. Do you think he will hit Margarito low if he gets in trouble ?
Friday July 25, 2008 12:13 ACE
12:14
Yeah, I think there's a pretty good chance of that. I think a lot of referees allow boxers to get away with more than they should in title fights. I've always felt that Bernard Hopkins gets away with too much holding and butting, even though I do really like Hopkins.

real excitement.. Cung Le just beat Frank Shamrock for a title in XC.. i believe Elite XC used to be on Showtime.. if that is the case.. you will see Cung Le and Frank Shamrock in the CBS's Elite XC.. I dont exactly agree with Frank's decision not to take the fight to the ground to keep his title, but then again these fighters do this to make things as entertaining as possible.. got to respect that.
Friday July 25, 2008 12:14 Curtis Ward
12:15
It was Strikeforce where Le and Shamrock fought.
Friday July 25, 2008 12:15
12:15
One of the problems with Cung Le is that he doesn't want to fight often.
Friday July 25, 2008 12:15
12:15
He's interested in acting, and he doesn't have another fight scheduled.
Friday July 25, 2008 12:15

Eventually I think one of those eight-figure paydays is going to be too alluring for him to turn down.
Friday July 25, 2008 12:19

Cung Le or Anderson Silva who wins ?
Friday July 25, 2008 12:21 ACE

no one seems to be talking about tomorrow's Cotto undercard
Friday July 25, 2008 12:22 Jamie

Friday July 25, 2008 12:26 ACE

Friday July 25, 2008 12:27 Bobby
12:28
Yeah, I'd been thinking about picking Margarito, but I just can't quite justify it.
Friday July 25, 2008 12:28

I would say that if they fought 10 times, Margarito would win three.

Who is the longest undefeated champion in boxing today ?
Friday July 25, 2008 12:30 ACE

Heath Herring is going to show us an exciting fight against Lesnar. He's vastly improved his conditioning.
Friday July 25, 2008 12:32 Tony
12:33
Lesnar is a tremeondous athlete, but I agree, if Herring is at his best, his superior experience might be enough to beat Lesnar.

GSP has talked about his training and he said he has some "tricks" for the Fitch fight. What do you think his game plan will be? He outwrestled Kosckeck. Think he will try to outwrestled this westler too? GSP has a lot of tools. I don't think Fitch does.
Friday July 25, 2008 12:37 tpinbc
12:38
You're right that GSP has a lot of tools. He's about as well-rounded a fighter as there is.
Friday July 25, 2008 12:38
12:38
I'm not totally sure about the "tricks" comment, but I do know he's been working very, very hard on his Brazilian jiujitsu skills.

Friday July 25, 2008 12:39 wade

That's really the key, to get the best fighters to square off against each other.
Friday July 25, 2008 12:39
12:42
[Comment From wadewade: ]
that would of course mean Cotto vs Mayweather and fights like that, but there's no way Floyd will get in a ring with somebody as dangerous as Cotto or Margarito
Friday July 25, 2008 12:42 wade
12:42
Yeah, that's the problem, as great as Floyd is, he doesn't necessarily want to fight great opponents.

I used to think that.
Friday July 25, 2008 12:47

Friday July 25, 2008 12:50

Arlovski's first fight with Sylvia was a lot like Fedor-Sylvia: Arlovski just knocked him down, went to the ground and submitted him in less than a minute.
Friday July 25, 2008 12:50
12:51
Of course, Sylvia later beat Arlovski twice in a row. I can't see Sylvia beating Fedor twice in a row.

Couldn't agree more about MMA vs. boxing undercards. UFC is smart to sell its shows as big five- or six-fight events, and not just two fighters.

Penn is going to dominate the LW division for a long time. He just wants to fight GSP to avenge a loss he thinks was unfair. If you saw the GSP/Penn fight you see Penn got penalized somwhat for not pushing the pace like GSP. Penn didn't get any damage though.
Friday July 25, 2008 12:53 tpinbc

Huerta Florian may be the fight of the year. I predic Huerta wins via knockout early. Florian is tuff though.

I don't believe that.. if Huerta wins a KO, he'll get it in the 3rd.. like he always pulls something out late when he has nothing left

Take the GSP/Hughes 2 fight and then Serra 1. GSP gets spooked.

There has never been a field of fighters like there is now. Unreal. And with MMA getting more popular, the sport will be getting more talented atheletes that may have grown up to be boxers, of nfl stars
