And extreme insanity you shall have. We'll be getting more FanHouse peeps in here in a moment, but for now, let's start with Manny Ramirez. Peter Gammons

Eamonn:
OK, so Manny's been acting up lately, but is he really that bad? This happens every year -- Manny almost gets traded, says some things he probably shouldn't say, the Red Sox brass gets mad at him, and then bam: two months later he's hitting home runs and all is forgotten.

[Comment From WadeWade: ]
Did anyone see Baseball Tonight last night with Steve Phillips and Peter Gammons discussing Manny? Peter was about to lose his mind. It looked like he wanted to say- "How'd the Mets turn out listening to you?"
Thursday July 31, 2008 1:05 Wade
1:06
Eamonn:
That's a question everyone wants to know the answer to, Wade. By the way, are you Ed Wade? Because we have similar questions for you, sir.

Eamonn:
OK, so Manny's approved the trade, but as Manny can't trade himself, that doesn't do much for us.
Thursday July 31, 2008 1:07 Eamonn
1:07
Pat Lackey:
Manny could be traded to the Marlins without the Pirates being involved.
Thursday July 31, 2008 1:07 Pat Lackey
1:07
Eamonn:
If Manny could trade himself he would have gone to the Rays for a box of animal crackers weeks ago.
Thursday July 31, 2008 1:07 Eamonn
1:07
Pat Lackey:
But I have to think they want Bay in return to fill his spot and won't do the deal otherwise.
Thursday July 31, 2008 1:07 Pat Lackey
1:08
Pat Lackey:
And for anyone that's curious, the Pittsburgh PG is also reporting that the one and only Ronny "Ballgame" Paulino (Jim Tracy's favorite player of all-time) might be involved in the trade now.
Thursday July 31, 2008 1:08 Pat Lackey
1:09
[Comment From Moonshine MikeMoonshine Mike: ]
is this the future of the Pirates? Another AAA Team that sells itself to Yanks and Sox each July? Maybe I should be slugging IC.

[Comment From WadeWade: ]
the chances of this going through have to be less than 50/50 right? A deal this overreported and it still hasn't happened doesn't seem likely.
Thursday July 31, 2008 1:09 Wade
1:09
Pat Lackey:
Mike, you're seeing the ceiling for this group of players in Pittsburgh right now. The minors are barren. The new front office has to clean up DL's mess before they can do anything else.
Thursday July 31, 2008 1:09 Pat Lackey

Ken Williams is crazy. That's what I think. Griffey's not worth a bucket of snot right now.

[Comment From WadeWade: ]

Eamonn:
I'll let you handle that one, Pat.
Thursday July 31, 2008 1:15 Eamonn

Pat Lackey:
Their offense isn't this good. Their pitching isn't this bad. Everyone's contract is up in 2009. That's a ceiling.
Thursday July 31, 2008 1:15 Pat Lackey

I think Williams is a mad genius. Two parts Branch Rickey, one part Steve Phillips.

Thursday July 31, 2008 1:16 Andrew Johnson

gorzel was 14-10 last year and the fans voted him into the all-star game. it's not like he took the 1 spot that had to be given to the team. maximum pitching + maximum hitting = ceiling.

New rule. I don't answer your questions about the Pirates if you don't know who made the All-Star team and who didn't. It may seem arbitrary, but I think it's fair.
Thursday July 31, 2008 1:22 Pat Lackey

Thursday July 31, 2008 1:25 Andrew Johnson

Thursday July 31, 2008 1:26 Pat Lackey
1:26
Eamonn:
Yeah, when I promised insanity, I was hoping we could segue nicely into Ed Wade's lifestyle. I picture Ed Wade like Howard Hughes now, without the intelligence or savvy. Just a shell of a man hedged away in a dark corner of the Astros front office, screaming about "contending now" and "no white flags."

Reports are beginning to surface that the three-way deal for Manny Ramirez is dead or close to dead, but I’m not buying it. The same snags exist now that existed this morning, and there’s still time to work them out before the 4 p.m. deadline. Also, according to a source, Manny is spending the day shopping in Boston, relaxing and waiting like the rest of us. He is anxious to learn where he may be playing Friday.

The Los Angels Dodgers have re-entered the Manny Ramirez Sweepstakes, SI.com has learned. The much-discussed deal to send the embattled superstar to the Marlins has hit a slight snag, leading the Red Sox to pursue other possibilities. The Marlins deal may not be dead. But the Dodgers could become a real player here and knock out Florida at the last minute. According to people familiar with the talks, the Dodgers have offered young outfielder Andre Ethier, but Boston is believed to prefer the ultra-talented Matt Kemp.

According to a baseball source, the Sox feel they cannot include outfielder Brandon Moss in a deal for Kansas City Royals left-handed reliever Ron Mahay largely because they need Moss as an insurance policy for the mercurial Ramirez. Should Ramirez pull another stunt as he did last week and deem himself unfit to play for any length of time - whether the result of a real of imaginary injury - the Sox feel they need Moss to provide them with enough outfield depth to endure such issues.

Manny Ramirez has been traded to the Dodgers in a three-team blockbuster, pending the approval of the commissioner's office, according to a source with knowledge of the deal. Pirates outfielder Jason Bay is headed to the Red Sox. The Pirates will receive Andy LaRoche and right-hander Bryan Morris from the Dodgers and outfielder Damien Moss and releiver Craig Hansen from the Red Sox.
