What do you think of Peter King's "gut feeling" that D'Angelo Williams will get 240 carries to 140 for Jonathan Stewart?
Friday August 8, 2008 2:34 John
2:34
I'm more concerned about Williams than I was a few weeks ago, but nothing huge has changed to me so far.   I'd expect those numbers to be flipped the other way around.

how do u feel about patrick crayton
Friday August 8, 2008 2:35 Smitty

I think I've overlooked him a bit this year.   He's a great late WR3/4 pick.   He's going to get targets and scores in a powerful offense.   We forget how far he's come in a short time and he can still improve

First-year keeper league. How should this affect (if at all) selecting amongst the Top 4 RBs. Does Peterson go over LDT, or does SJax go over Westbrook, just because of their age?
Friday August 8, 2008 2:37 Mike
2:38
How many can you keep each year?   Either way, I'd probably take Peterson first, then LT, then SJax, then Westbrook.   But I have Westbrook fourth regardless.

What's your take on S Jackson's contract hold-out in StL?
Friday August 8, 2008 2:38 Larry
2:39

Speaking of which ... I'm not that concerned yet.   Wake me up in two weeks.   Then it starts being a concern.   Even if he starts slow, have you seen LT2's Septembers the last two years?   That doesn't seem to affect his draft slot much.

How much confidence are you gaining in Marvin Harrison with all the glowing reports? Can he break into the top 15 receivers?
Friday August 8, 2008 2:39 DJOmaha
2:41
A lot and ... yes.   He's pretty damn close on our draft guide rankings already - 18th.     I could see him passing Welker and Roy Williams.   Any higher will be tough.   But I'd love to see Harrison make a few plays in preseason.

With the way 250+ carries RBs are falling in the draft, what do you think about a WR, WR, RB, RB strategy? Picking up say Stewart and White in 3 and 4. (Also, I play in a 16 team league).
Friday August 8, 2008 2:41 StevenG
2:43
Unless that first receiver is Randy Moss, I would be confident enough in the WRs available in rounds 2 and 3.   I still think the RBs, especially the top-ten, are the best value in the first round.

I have been offered Brandon Marshall and Willie Parker for Roy Williams and McFadden. Yay or nay on this deal
Friday August 8, 2008 2:43 Misrememberers
2:44
Nay in a keeper for sure.   Nay in a redraft as well, but it's much closer.   Parker is the worst player in the deal in my opinion, and the WR upgrade doesn't make up for it.

Friday August 8, 2008 2:45 JAMES

Philly fans seem to be worried about this.   I need to know more, but my answer is no.   A poor September and October would move him, not a poor August.

Should we aim to pick up a top 5 QB in the first 3-4 rounds, or pick up value with a Garrard or Schaub later in the draft?
Friday August 8, 2008 2:46 BallJunkie
2:48
I like most of the top-5 in the fourth round if they get that far.   I took Manning at 3.09 once and Palmer at 5.03.   That's good value.   Otherwise, I'd rather go with some sort of Cutler/Garrard/Schaub/McNabb, etc combo platter later.   I will say that if you don't go top five, I think it's worth getting 2 of my top 17.   I think the drop-off at backup QB is bigger than usual.   Once you get to the Kitna's .... ugh.

who is a better s.young or l.maroney
Friday August 8, 2008 2:48 jr
2:49
I'd still take Maroney.   They are both iffy in terms of workload and durability, but Maroney is a first-round talent who plays on the best offense in the league.   He's a decent third round pick and a better fourth.   Young, to me, is around pick 50.   Torain's injury helps but Young has to stay healthy.

How much stock do you put into J.T. O'Sullivan starting for the Niners tonight? Is he really the frontrunner or do you think Smith will still win the job? As a 49er fan, I'm just concerned that none of them are any good. Can we still get Pennington? LOL
Friday August 8, 2008 2:49 DJOmaha
2:50
They are certainly making it interesting.     It's not that rare, however, to start someone in Week 1 of the preseason, then the real favorite in Week 2.   In Baltimore, Troy Smith is starting next week.   That's a bigger game.   I think Smith will start next week for SF and remains the favorite.

Friday August 8, 2008 2:50 Chris
2:51
I'm not that excited about him.   He had a lot of injury problems recently, although his weight seems to be under control.   I wouldn't expect more than 500-550 yards.   Scaife is still around too.

Friday August 8, 2008 2:51 Misrememberers

Not a great one, but I'm down on Favre.   Probably a third running back for depth like Chris Johnson or Kenny Watson or a third receiver like a Donald Driver, Vincent Jackson.

[Comment From DarriusDarrius: ]
Ok, you're drafting at the end of the draft and you get a guy like Lynch, Portis or Barber. Do grab a top WR at the beginning of the 2nd round and take your chances or a lesser RB2 at the end of the 3rd? Or do you grab another RB and come back for a WR later?
Friday August 8, 2008 2:52 Darrius
2:53
If the Barber-Lynch-Portis trio are still there in the second round, I take two straight.   Otherwise, I take a WR.   Ryan Grant is my cutoff.   I'd still take him over a WR.

[Comment From AndiAndi: ]
I've heard a lot of good things about Tennessee's rookie Chris Johnson. What's your take on him?
Friday August 8, 2008 2:53 Andi
2:55
I try not to get TOO carried away with camp reports. It's a good sign for sure.   But over the years, I've found that the changes I make in my projections based on flowery camp reports are wrong just as much as they are right.   Fast guys often impress before really hitting starts.   Johnson is someone to watch in the preseason.   If he keeps up the momentum, his role is going to grown.   I still see him as a RB4-type player, but he's rising.

Do you think DJ Hackett can stay healthy this year? If so is he worth a middle round pick?
Friday August 8, 2008 2:55 Ted
2:55
History says he can't.   And he's not right now.   I think he's more of a mid-to-late round guy.   Like Round 10-11 for depth.

Friday August 8, 2008 2:56 scott
2:57
I was very concerned before the injury, so it's basically what I expected.   Still, it's early August.   He has time.   I just don't think that he has much of a chance to be a consistent fantasy option.   I think they will go committee to keep him healthy.   I have him hovering around pick 100, which says how I feel.

Where would you rank McGahee this year? Are you worried about the injury and the hype that Ray Rice is getting.
Friday August 8, 2008 2:57 Mike
2:58
Injury - no.   Its the preseason.   Guys don't like to practice much, especially ones from the U.   Ray Rice is a bigger concern, although he didn't have a great preseason opener, which isn't worth much.   I think they will get Rice involved on passing downs, but I think McGahee keeps his workload the same.   I have him ranked 14th at RB  I believe, in the second round.

I know everyone is talking about the Jets WRs but what about Thomas Jones getting help from Favre and Faneca. He do you project him
Friday August 8, 2008 3:00 Mike S
3:01
I already liked Jones, if only because he'll drop out of the top 40-50 picks.   His lack of TDs last year was fluky.   He will score more, and he'll get his 1100 yards.   Not thrilling, but a nice value late that you can use.

[Comment From BallJunkieBallJunkie: ]
Pierre Thomas had a bad first game, is he still worth a late round pick?
Friday August 8, 2008 3:01 BallJunkie
3:03
Absolutely.   Don't get carried away with the preseason.   There is no scheming, no blitzes, vanilla play calls.   It's just not real football.   Would I like to see him improve next game?   Sure.   I bet he will.   But Deuce McAllister's health will make the difference, not Thomas' preseason stats.

Do you have a draft strategy for the 6 picks after taking typically a RB-RB in the 1st and 2nd? I'd say WR, WR/QB, WR/QB, TE, WR, RB
Friday August 8, 2008 3:03 Wilson
3:04
I will probably take a WR more often in the second round this year.   But I always stress, don't lock yourself into a specific plan.   Be flexible and take value as it comes.   I usually load up on RBs and Wrs, but every draft is different.

Friday August 8, 2008 3:07 keith
3:08
Sammy Morris is around as well, not to mention Kevin Faulk. I think it's fair to expect the Pats to save Maroney in the first half of the season some by giving him 15-18 carries, not 20+.

Nope.   Because to me, Young wasn't totally battling Torain.   He's battling his own durability and body type.   He has all the opportunity in the world.   I bumped him a little but not too much

Just kidding, I'm in a 44-man roster Dynasty IDP league that also uses PPR scoring.   It depends on how many IDPs you start, but in general you still want to fill your starting spots other than TE,K before you start loading up on IDPS.   WRs  get overlooked in that format.

Robert Meachem looked good in the first preseason game, and although his 60 yard TD run was against players that may not even make the team I thought he showed tremendous athleticism and potential. What do you think we can expect out of this young WR in his 2nd year?
Friday August 8, 2008 3:13 Mike
3:14
Again, I wouldnt   get carried away.   Since he plays on the Saints, I think you could HOPE for him to eventually start and gain 750-800 yards.   Realistically, I would expect closer to 600.

Are there RBs you are absolutely staying away from due to shoddy supporting cast/offensive line (LJ, Michael Turner for example) as opposed to sheer decline (Rudi)?
Friday August 8, 2008 3:14 John
3:16
gEveryone has a price, but LJ and Turner are guys I'm mostly avoiding at their usual ADP. I'm staying away from all Detroit backs as well.   Again, it was only the preseason.   But they missed a ton of blocks last night.

Where do you see Kevin Jones (if he's healthy) fitting into the mix in Chicago? With a Forte/Wolfe combo looking good in the first preseason game.
Friday August 8, 2008 3:16 Mike
3:17

Once Jones gets healthy, which may not be well into the season, I think he'll get about half of Forte's carries.   So 60% Forte, 30% Jones, and 10% Wolfe Parade.

Anderson has enjoyed a stronger camp than Quinn.   Really, though, its all about the regular season.   I think the Browns will have to be 2 games under .500 at any point say after 6 games for Quinn to get a look.   They just have to win.

Why r people ranking owen daniels so low considering he is one of the better TE out there?

Daniels had a  huge first two years for yardage.   I have him ranked in the top ten, and with no great second receiver there, he should be a consistent force in PPR leagues.   As for Russ, I wasn't kidding?   But I probably didn't pass on a chance to give Forte props, there are just a lot of questions.   Which is great

Nope, I have you 16th.   One spot of your BFF Aaron Rodgers.

Which late round running backs do you see having star potential? Are people like Ricky Williams and Ray Rice players who can rise to stardom with an injury to their team's injury prone starter?

Good to see you are staying busy Phil.   Or are you dead, I forget?   Rice and Ricky are two good ones. Pierre Thomas, Kenny Watson, Ahmad Bradshaw, and Colts unnamed backup are some more.

Where do you rank the Dallas Cowboys Def/Spec. with the addition of Adam Jones?
Friday August 8, 2008 3:37 Brad

I have them fifth, which is somewhat conservative.   You can definitely make a case that any of my top six are worth number one: San Diego, Chicago, Minnesota, New England, Dallas, and the Giants.   All strong.

Is it worth it to take a top tier defense (Chargers, Vikings) over a 4th or 5th RB/WR?
Friday August 8, 2008 3:38 Kyle
3:39
No because of my last answer.   At least not a WR4/RB4.   I like plenty of defenses and they all score.

Not this year, but I think he'll get more carries than James' backups ever have in Arizona.

Anybody who has been a fan of the site for while knows you were waayy ahead of the curve on guys like Gore, FWP, Gates, C. Palmer and, to an extent, Jacobs. Any guys you whiffed on that you recall?

Ha, plenty.   Thanks for buttering me up before asking that.   I had Edge WAY too high when he went to Arizona, which was unforgivable.   I remember one year I had Boo Williams in the top ten TEs.   That didnt work out too well.  I hung on to Michael Clayton too long.   Aaron Brooks in Oakland ... not so fun.   There are a couple.

Shouldn't Ted Thompson be to blame for the whole Favre situation? If Ted Thompson wasn't cheap and traded for Randy Moss there is no way the Packers don't win the Super Bowl.

I think they have to be VERY happy with Jennings/Jones/Driver and now Nelson.   All things considered, Thompson made the right move there.

It sounds like Eddie Royal could keep the starting job once Marshall is back, which is very bad news for Jackson.   We'll see if that actually happens.

Friday August 8, 2008 3:42 scott

A little of both. I think he's likely to get 300 carries on a very good offense.   Like Willie Parker pre-Mendenhall, I think he's better in fantasy than real life because he'll rip off lots of long runs to go with getting stuffed too much.

Why is my Westbrook vs. AP question not getting any consideration????
Friday August 8, 2008 3:43 Elliot

In a PPR league, I'd take Westbrook.   Look, it's totally legit to take ANY of the top-five RBs in any order.   I really believe that. I happen to think LT-Peterson-Jackson-West-Addai is the order to go.   Peterson falls a few spots in PPR.     but don't get carried away with all our cheat sheets.   Its YOUR team and there will be lots of surprises.

right on.   your conditioning level can be questioned, sometimes tapping out of games.   Your receiving skills keep you from being a top-ten guy, not to mention your QBs.   But you are a very safe, reliable RB2 pick.   And that is worthy plenty.

Everyone with value questions - just pony up for the Draft Guide. The cheatsheets can be set up to rank by std fantasy points, PPR or you can input your scoring system. It's worth it. Good articles too. I don't work for Rotoworld. In fact, I'm trying to keep it a secret from my league members.
