Is Sedrick Ellis really going to have a "Glenn Dorsey at LSU" like impact for the Saints...
Thursday July 31, 2008 12:31 DerrickShepherdNeedsHisMa
12:34
Mike Triplett:

I think Ellis will be make a big impact on this team right away. He’ll probably line up as the starter, but that might be a moot point since the Saints do so much rotating at defensive tackle. Maybe they’ll want Hollis Thomas and Brian Young in there on some of the rushing downs. The best thing about Ellis, though, will be his versatility. He can be a run stuffer, he can push through the line to blow up some running lanes, and he can be a disruptive pass rusher up the middle. If he lives up to his potential, he’s really a different kind of athlete that the Saints haven’t had in that position for a long time.

We’ve only seen him practice once, and he obviously wasn’t at top speed just yet. But his athleticism was noticeable during the minicamps, and I’m sure he’ll be showing that off by the second or third preseason game.

Who has really stood out this past week at camp?
Thursday July 31, 2008 12:34 Scotty B
12:39
Mike Triplett:

A couple of rookies come to mind right away. Sean Payton just mentioned offensive lineman Carl Nicks again this morning. He stands out simply because of his size -- he's a behemoth at 6-5, 343 -- but he's pretty athletic, too. He's looked even better at tackle than at guard, but you know the coaches love that he seems comfortable at both spots. I don't expect him to push for a starting job right away, though, unless there are injuries.

We've mentioned receiver Adrian Arrington a bunch, but the attention seems warranted because he has consistently continued to make big plays and make some tough catches. We've seen plenty of drops, too, so he hasn't been overwhelming. But he's doing the kind of things that get you noticed. He has an excellent chance of making this roster if he keeps this up during the preseason games.

Defensive tackle Antwan Lake keeps making a bunch of nice plays. Cornerback Usama Young has had some highlights. I expect big things from linebacker Jonathan Vilma, who looks really fast and fluid out there. I think new cornerback Randall Gay will bring some stability to that position, which the Saints have been lacking. ... I'm sure I'm missing a couple other guys.

12:41
Mike Triplett:
I think it's somewhere in between. I think the Saints have a few "Plan Bs" in mind in case Deuce suffers any setbacks, but there's no real sense of urgency there as long as Deuce continues to look OK during camp. I think the team is high on Pierre Thomas, and they have always trusted Aaron Stecker. If they were really concerned, they would have added someone before now. ... As for Alexander specifically, I haven't hear anything that leads me to believe he's on the top of their list.

12:45
Mike Triplett:
Like I said, I think I've been most impressed by Gay so far, even though he's been limited by a hamstring injury. Linebacker Scott Fujita said the other day that he's got a "savvy" about him, an aura that he thinks comes from his days in New England (not to mention a pretty impressive defense at LSU). ... I expect Gay to be a starter this year because I think he'll be the most consistent performer throughout the preseason.

Mike McKenzie is coming along slowly but surely from his knee injury. Jason David has had more highlights than he did last year, and Usama Young looks like he'll compete for some playing time. They still have Jason Craft around, and when Tracy Porter comes back from his hamstring injury, we'll see what he can do. ... The talent certainly isn't overwhelming, but they've got more options, so they'll definitely be  a little better than last year. The biggest improvement should come with the pass rush, though, which will keep the secondary from getting toasted so often.

Should we expect to see Grant playing DT this year?
Thursday July 31, 2008 12:45 Scotty B
12:47
Mike Triplett:
Yes, Scotty. We've finally started to see him line up there a few times in these last few days of practice, and yesterday we saw Bobby McCray and Sedrick Ellis team up on a few nice plays. When they put those three players out there together with Will Smith, I think that will be a very impressive front four.

Grant, by the way, is a lot slimmer and faster out there than he was last year. So don't expect a full-time move to tackle.

Mike Triplett:
We've seen our share of good and bad plays from David. But he definitely has some playmaking ability, and he's a lot more confident with this defensive system, so he's not looking lost as many times as last year. ... We'll learn a lot more about him once the games start. He should match up against Larry Fitzgerald or Anquan Boldin next week in Arizona. You can't get much better test than that.

Does Skylar Green make this team? What about Adrian Arrington?
Thursday July 31, 2008 12:53 Will
12:54
Mike Triplett:
That's the question of the week, with Arrington and Robert Meachem earning some good reviews. Who do they bump off? ... I think Marques Colston, David Patten and Meachem are locks to make the roster. Arrington will certainly have to beat out Devery Henderson if he wants to make this team. Even then, he'll need to prove he's at least serviceable on special teams to earn that fourth receiver spot. ... The numbers aren't in his favor, but if he keeps making plays the way he has been, the Saints will have to keep him.

I think Terrance Copper will make the team because of his special teams prowess. And I think the Saints need to keep either Lance Moore or Skyler Green as a punt returner, with Moore being the favorite right now. So it's looking like the Saints will likely keep 6 at this point.

How is Vilma looking? Will he be 100% and be able to go sideline to sideline like he did his 1st couple years with the Jets? Do you think he lost any confidence after these last 2 years?
Thursday July 31, 2008 12:54 Michael
12:56
Mike Triplett:
We won't get to see this guys do any live tacklin until the Arizona game, so that's when we'll really see what kind of playmaker Vilma is. But I've really been impressed by his speed and athleticism, and I think he's shut down any concerns about that knee injury, unless he suffers a setback.

The Saints will go full speed in Saturday's scrimmage, though they won't tackle all the way to the ground. It will be interesting to see if Vilma and Reggie Bush match up a few times.

12:59
Mike Triplett:

It's so hard to evaluate the running backs when they aren't tackling in practice, but Thomas looks healthy and athletic, and he's definitely confident and excited when you talk to him. ... Confidence is definitely a strong suit for him. He came into camp last year and basically forced this team to keep him on the roster last year, and he only got better throughout the season. I think we'll see a lot more carries and catches for him this year, no doubt.

Mike Triplett:

Shockey has been limited in practice, working at the same pace as guys like Deuce McAllister, Mike McKenzie and Brian Young. And he's also still learning the playbook, so he bounces around with the first, second and third teams a lot. We definitely haven't gotten a good feel for what he can do just yet.

I think the slow pace is just a precaution, though, and a broken bone always heals better than a torn ligament. So I expect him to be at full speed by Week 1. ... He might not play in Saturday's scrimmage. Payton hasn't announced the full plan yet/

I think I'm one of the few remaining holdouts who still expects big things from Reggie. He was outstanding in the final two months of his rookie season, and he is a truly special type of athlete that really adds a unique dimension to the offense. ... I think he was humbled by his struggles last year, and I think Payton learned from his mistakes about how to use him, so I think he'll be a lot more effective this season.

I expect him to be used a lot more as a runner/receiver like he was in 2006, whether it's Deuce or Pierre lining up as the primary tailback.

This has to be the fastest Saints team we've had. Has the extra speed been noticable to You
Thursday July 31, 2008 1:06 Guest
1:08
Mike Triplett:
WIthout question, speed was the theme of this offseason. Vilma, McCray and Ellis each give them a new level of speed and athleticism that they haven't had at those three positions in a long time. And that's probably the No. 1 element that this team lacked last season.

I mean, there were some games where quarterbacks like Jeff Garcia, Marc Bulger, Matt Schaub, even Chris Redman just stood back there and picked apart the Saints secondary. Like I said before, those improvements up front should lead to the biggest improvements in the passing defense.

Can you fill us in on the Safety situation? They were out of position so many times last year, what is being done to address that and will Bullocks lose his starting job?
Thursday July 31, 2008 1:09 StewartdaCLOWN
1:11
Mike Triplett:
Yeah, the safeties weren't all that much more impressive than the cornerback last year -- I think as a result of what I was just talking about with the pass rush. But I think the Saints feel pretty good about the talent they have at safety. Roman Harper has shown some nice potential, especially as a hitter and tackler, and both Kevin Kaesviharn and Josh Bullocks are solid, if unspectacular. ... I think Bullocks will be on a short leash after being so inconsistent last season. It doesn't help that he's been slowed by a knee injury. But that's probably an equal 50/50 battle between him and Kaesviharn that will get decided in the preseason games.

If the competition between Gramatica and Mehlhaff does not produce a clear winner, who will Payton keep? Does Gramatica's status as a veteran give him an edge, perhaps because the team would prefer a veteran kicker over a rookie to make a game-winning kick?
Thursday July 31, 2008 1:11 Todd
1:13
Mike Triplett:
That's another job that will be decided in the games. You can't really learn too much about a kicker until he gets in those live situations. ... Even if Mehlhaff doesn't win that role, though, he could also try to win a job as a kickoff specialist. He was really showing off his strong leg during practice today with some long, high kickoffs that had a lot of hang time.

It seems that Offensive line has some competition, and that we could possibly cut a big name. like Bushrod or Alleman.
Thursday July 31, 2008 1:14 Guest
1:17
Mike Triplett:

I think Bushrod should be safe. He's a big, impressive athlete who the coaches have really liked over the last two years. They moved him over to left tackle this year, and he got some time with the first-team offense when Jammal Brown left last week to attend a funeral. ... Alleman has looked a little more inconsistent in camp so far. There's still probably room for him on the roster, but Nicks' emergence will definitely push him.

I think the Saints love their young depth on the line. The five starters are pretty safe for now, though.

1:19
Mike Triplett:
We just talked about Karney today. He's one of those consistent, underappreciated guys who rarely gets talked about because he's the same year in and year out. ... But he is noticeable slimmer this year. He dropped about 10 pounds, from the low 260s to the low 250s. He bulked up last year, but he and the coaches felt like he lost a little speed and agility in the process, so they want him tp move a little better. He's still punishing enough to get the job done at that size, though.

Mike Triplett:
Of course I'd be worried if Brees went down. Unless Peyton Manning or Tom Brady is the backup, then the Saints would be suffering a dropoff. ... But I think Brunell is a nice backup option, especially in small doses. He doesn't throw a lot of interceptions. He's a good decision maker who sees the field well. He throws a lot of short and mid-range passes, which the Saints do a lot of in their West-Coast style offense. He might not step up and win games for you, but he won't get you in a lot of trouble if he gets thrown in there.

Are we looking for maybe Simoneau to challenge Shanle for his spot at outside backer?
Thursday July 31, 2008 1:22 Carnell in Dallas
1:25
Mike Triplett:
Simoneau has spent all his time at middle linebacker so far, so it doesn't look like a competition will develop over there. But that's a good point. Simoneau does have experience playing on the weak side, so he would probably be the primary backup behind both Shanle and Vilma, assuming Vilma wins the starting job.

Simoneau hasn't given up that starting MLB job just yet, though. Last year, he was stubborn enough to hold off free agent Brian Simmons all year. I definitely expect Vilma to win the job, but Simoneau probabloy doesn't get his just credit. Friend and teammate Scott Fujita was just singling him out the other day as one of the most impressive guys on the defense this summer. He said Simoneau gets better and better every year, pretty much because he's forced to.

I think you'd be safe to write his name in pen on your 53-man roster. In fact, the Saints already cut the other long snapper that they brought to camp a few days ago. ... Houser definitely deserves some love. He's been on the team longer than any current Saints, he hardly ever gets noticed (which is a good thing for a long snapper), and he's a great guy.

Honestly, I don't think there would be much of a market there. He was a free agent this year, and he didn't get a lot of love.  I think the Saints and Tampa Bay both offered him minimal deals. ... Mitchell and Dunbar have both been pretty impressive. Dunbar is a sleeper candidate to make the roster, and Mitchell is practically a lock.
