Ben Nicholson-Smith:
Hey everyone. Thanks for stopping by. There's lots to discuss this week, with the Blue Jays keeping busy, the Red Sox nearing a deal with Gomes, the Royals signing Guthrie and lots of 40-man moves. Let me know what's on your mind and I'll get to as many questions as I can in the next hour...

The Tigers have always liked Drew and they could flip Peralta if they sign another SS, so I view Detroit as a legitimate landing spot for Drew.

Once Figgins clears waivers and becomes a free agent I see him signing a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training somewhere. Maybe a club like the Mets would take a chance on him.

I think the Dodgers will sign him. They have the need and the money. And, now that he has pitched in Anaheim, they have some confidence that he can handle their market.

What's the Rockies' best strategy to trade for quality pitchers? Cuddyer?
Wednesday November 21, 2012 3:04 Down with ODouche
3:05
Ben Nicholson-Smith:
Depends on the caliber of pitcher they're hoping to obtain. I don't think Cuddyer has much surplus trade value at this point. He's earning $10.5MM per season for the next two years and while that's not bad, it's not like he's a bargain. If they want a quality young pitcher I think we're talking about Dexter Fowler, as painful as that would be.

Any trade value for the Giants to deal Meijeres?
Wednesday November 21, 2012 3:06 Greg

Ben Nicholson-Smith:
On the one hand, he seems like a trade candidate. He's one of three SF lefties at a time that left-handed relief is in demand. Yet most teams allowed him to pass through waivers last summer, so I wonder if he's not a coveted player. I believe he'd have some value, but nothing wild.

Thoughts on the Guthrie signing? One year too much?
Wednesday November 21, 2012 3:10 GMDM
3:11
Ben Nicholson-Smith:
I think Guthrie's reps at Excel Sports Management deserve credit here. They pushed for a three-year deal and got it, when similar pitchers (maybe Blanton or Saunders) will end up signing for fewer years and a much smaller guarantee. Couldn't have drawn it up much better.

As for the Royals, I think it shows they still must overpay a little to get free agents to sign in KC. The Yankees, on the other hand, have players like Kuroda signing in New York for less money than other clubs offered.

If I were a mid-market team with an average amount of pitching I would have wanted Guthrie for one year and maybe $8MM but not more than that.

Honestly I think the Red Sox should just wait it out for another year with Ellsbury. An extension would cost too much and a trade wouldn't bring a ton in return. You know the talent is there and you can get a 2014 draft pick if he leaves as a free agent a year from now.

The guaranteed portion of a contract goes to the player regardless of how he performs or whether the clubs chooses to keep him on the roster. Once he signs that deal, he's getting that money.

There can also be non-guaranteed portions of contracts such as incentives and vesting options. Minor league deals are non-guaranteed.

Could you see Delmon Young being signed by the Yankees to platoon with Ibanez?

Ben Nicholson-Smith:
I don't see that happening. There are only so many roster spots to go around and I think the Yankees would like players with more defensive value if possible (I do think Ibanez is a legit possibility in NY though).

It's still hard to say how much playing time Gordon will get with Cruz and Hanley also involved on the left side of the infield.

Tons. There always is. It's a great time to be a baseball fan and we'll have 24-hour coverage.

You've got to think so. They have big time needs in the outfield and behind the plate. Plus I expect they'll acquire a starter.

Joakim Soria has said he would sign with the Yankees to set-up for Mo. Do you view him as a set-up man or closer?

Ben Nicholson-Smith:
For now I view him as injured, but assuming he makes a full recovery I view him as a guy who could certainly close again.
