2008 PGA Championship at Oakland Hills - Final Round
11:18
Philip Zaroo:

Welcome ladies and germs to the final found…errr, and shortened third round of the PGA Championship on a brisk Sunday morning/afternoon at Oakland Hills.

Sunday August 10, 2008 11:18 Philip Zaroo
11:21
James Schmehl:

Due to thunderstorms, the third round restarted today at 7:15 a.m. Three groups were unable to begin their rounds on Saturday, including: David Toms, Henrik Stenson, Ben Curtis, Justin Rose, J.B. Holmes and Charlie Wi. Their rounds are expected to be completed by 11:50 a.m. – paving the way for the final round, with starting times beginning at 12:20 p.m.

Sunday August 10, 2008 11:21 James Schmehl
11:22
Josh Slagter:
The leaders are finally finishing up their third round. J.B. Holmes is on 17 now, but he now trails leader Ben Curtis by one.
Sunday August 10, 2008 11:22 Josh Slagter
11:23
Josh Slagter:
Henrik Stenson is in the clubhouse at 1 under, while Curtis is 3 under and playing 18. Holmes is 2 under.
Sunday August 10, 2008 11:23 Josh Slagter
11:24
Josh Slagter:
Padraig Harrington finished with a 66 to get back in it at +1. Overall the course is playing two shots easier than earlier in the week.
Sunday August 10, 2008 11:24 Josh Slagter
11:28
James Schmehl:

What you likely haven’t seen so far is the solid third round that Ben Curtis has put together through 17 holes. Curtis, who started the third round even and one stroke behind leader J.B. Holmes, is now 3 under in a field that has limited only three players to shoot under par.

Sunday August 10, 2008 11:28 James Schmehl
11:29
James Schmehl:

Ouch – and right as I hit enter, Curtis bogeys No. 18 to finish his third round with a 2-under 68. Still good enough to carry the lead.

Sunday August 10, 2008 11:29 James Schmehl
11:29
Josh Slagter:
Bogey by Curtis on 18. He's tied with Holmes at 2 under.
Sunday August 10, 2008 11:29 Josh Slagter
11:29
Josh Slagter:
Or just momentarily a tie, until J.B. follows with a bogey of his own
Sunday August 10, 2008 11:29 Josh Slagter
11:32
James Schmehl:

Harrington said the conditions are a lot easier today – following his strong finish this morning. He said the greens are much softer – despite the ball not traveling as far due to the cold.

“When you are in position, you can fire at all the pins,” Harrington said.

Sunday August 10, 2008 11:32 James Schmehl
11:35
Josh Slagter:
It isn't the  cold that's affecting how far the ball goes as much as the soft, wet conditions. That said, nobody matched Romero's 65 from Saturday.
Sunday August 10, 2008 11:35 Josh Slagter
11:37
James Schmehl:
I'm sure it's a mixture of all of the above.
Sunday August 10, 2008 11:37 James Schmehl
11:39
Josh Slagter:
Well, J.B. Holmes just a carried the ball 320 on 18 ... but into the bunker.
Sunday August 10, 2008 11:39 Josh Slagter
11:39
James Schmehl:

Nos. 16, 17 and 18 continue to leave players with a sour taste in their mouth. Curtis, Harrington, Garcia and Villegas are only a few of the players near the top of the leaderboard that bogeyed No. 18.

Even after shooting a 66, Padraig said he was disappointed with a round that has put him in contention for the Wanamaker Trophy.

Sunday August 10, 2008 11:39 James Schmehl
11:44
James Schmehl:

I think Stenson is the only player in the top 20 to birdie No. 18 today. The rest of the field seems to be struggling mightily with the four bunkers surrounding the green.

Sunday August 10, 2008 11:44 James Schmehl
11:44
Josh Slagter:
Final group is set with J.B., Curtis and Stenson.
Sunday August 10, 2008 11:44 Josh Slagter
11:45
Josh Slagter:
And the threesome right behind them is quite formidable, with Harrington and Garcia three shots back at +1. They'll be joined by PGA rookie Charlie Wi.

If Wi had bogeyed 18, it   would've been Andres Romero.
Sunday August 10, 2008 11:45 Josh Slagter
11:49
James Schmehl:

Notable Names Alert: Mickelson finished his third round with a 1-over 71 after bogeys back-to-back on Nos. 10 and 11 and sits at +4 overall.

Sunday August 10, 2008 11:49 James Schmehl
11:51
James Schmehl:

Also, Justin Rose knocked himself out of contention after recording a 4-over 74 today. Rose triple-bogeyed No. 10 and shot a double bogey on No. 16. Ouch. Looks like Rose’s search for his first PGA win won’t end after today.

Sunday August 10, 2008 11:51 James Schmehl
11:53
Josh Slagter:
Curtis won the 2003 British Open at Royal St. George's, which still is one more major victory than Sergio Garcia.
Sunday August 10, 2008 11:53 Josh Slagter
11:54
Josh Slagter:

Maybe Lions fans will have a winner to cheer for this afternoon.

Sunday August 10, 2008 11:54 Josh Slagter
11:55
James Schmehl:

Rocco fans will be happy to know that the veteran recorded his best round of the week today with a 2-over 72 – despite a bogey on No. 18. Rocco won’t be pulling out a Major win with his +9 overall, but he’s still one of my favorites, nonetheless.

Sunday August 10, 2008 11:55 James Schmehl
11:56
James Schmehl:

I’m not sure if the exact tee times have been set for the Curtis, Holmes and Stenson group, but I’ve been told it’s at 2:20 p.m. – Josh, any insight?

Sunday August 10, 2008 11:56 James Schmehl
11:59
Josh Slagter:
2:20 says the TNT guys, they're never wrong.
Sunday August 10, 2008 11:59 Josh Slagter
12:01
James Schmehl:

Sheesh – two full rounds in one day has to be tough on anybody. Padraig said he was up at 4:30 a.m. this morning doing his exercises. Now he has about three hours after finishing his third round to rest and prepare for the final round of a flipping Major.

Sunday August 10, 2008 12:01 James Schmehl
12:03
James Schmehl:

FYI: Just wanted to give everyone a heads up on today’s weather forecast. The weather man is calling for partly cloudy with scattered rain showers and possibly an isolated thunderstorm around 2 p.m. According to DTN Meteorlogix, rain will likely last until 6 p.m. or so. If you’re planning on coming out today, make sure to bring an umbrella.

Sunday August 10, 2008 12:03 James Schmehl
12:04
James Schmehl:

And, bringing an umbrella is an understatement.

Sunday August 10, 2008 12:04 James Schmehl
12:10
James Schmehl:
Word just came down: Curtis, Holmes and Stenson will tee off at 2:10 p.m.
Sunday August 10, 2008 12:10 James Schmehl
12:10
James Schmehl:
As stated previously, the first group will tee off at No. 1 at 12:20 p.m. to kick off the final round of the PGA Championship.
Sunday August 10, 2008 12:10 James Schmehl
12:14
James Schmehl:
While we're waiting for the latest information on the afternoon's starting times, I found the website of the Argentine with the clubhouse low 65 yesterday, Andres Romero. You can find it here. Nicknamed "Pigu," the 27-year-old says he was a big mountain biker until it became apparent that he'd be heading down the golf path.
Sunday August 10, 2008 12:14 James Schmehl
12:27
James Schmehl:

Josh - weren't sure if you were aware of this, but Retief Goosen had a solid third round today. The 2001 & '04 U.S. Champion shot a 1-under 69 today and is now +5 overall – tied for 18th. What a Retrief, eh? Meanwhile, my pick (Anthony Kim) fell to +9 overall, after a mediocre 4-over 74 third round and Phil's pick (Jim Furyk) is holding strong at +8 overall.

Sunday August 10, 2008 12:27 James Schmehl
12:30
Who do you think will pull out the PGA Championship victory?
Ben Curtis
 ( 14% )
Henrik Stenson
 ( 7% )
J.B. Holmes
 ( 7% )
Padraig Harrington
 ( 29% )
Sergio Garcia
 ( 36% )
Other
 ( 7% )

Sunday August 10, 2008 12:30
12:36
James Schmehl:

I don't want to jinx today’s pleasant weather – so far, but considering there is a good chance of thunderstorms this afternoon, I thought I would share Monday's forecast with you - in case tournament play resumes tomorrow. Monday calls for mostly sunny with only 20 percent chance of precipitation. Here’s hoping it won’t have to come to that…

Sunday August 10, 2008 12:36 James Schmehl
12:41
James Schmehl:

Today’s crowd is already impressive – despite the final round having started less than 20 minutes ago. Fans are really crowding around the Nos. 1, 16, 17 and 18 galleries and the final group still isn’t teeing off for another 1 hour and ½.

Sunday August 10, 2008 12:41 James Schmehl
12:48
James Schmehl:

The players at the top of the leaderboard seem to be pretty receptive to the idea of playing 36 holes in 24 hours. Both Charlie Wi, who is three strokes behind current leader Ben Curtis, and Henrik Stenson, who is one shot off the lead, said teeing off again – so soon – won’t be a problem.

“You know, I don’t have to wait 24 hours to play. It’s nice to go back out there and do it again,” Wi said.

Sunday August 10, 2008 12:48 James Schmehl
12:50
James Schmehl:

Stenson – who woke up early this morning to finish his third round – said he’s scared about falling before his final round, which is set for 2:10 p.m.

“I don’t know if it’s a good day to go to sleep,” Stenson said. “I might not wake up in the afternoon.”

Sunday August 10, 2008 12:50 James Schmehl
12:54
James Schmehl:

If you haven’t noticed by now, to make the final round move faster, players are playing the final round in groups of 3s - rather than the conventional pairs.

Sunday August 10, 2008 12:54 James Schmehl
12:57
James Schmehl:
.....sorry folks, but the rain is kicking in again.
Sunday August 10, 2008 12:57 James Schmehl
12:57
James Schmehl:
No word on whether play has been suspended yet. I'll keep you updated.
Sunday August 10, 2008 12:57 James Schmehl
12:59
James Schmehl:

Rocco Mediate double bogeys No. 10 – his first hole of the final round – and sits at +11 overall. I’m blaming the rain. Anthony Kim, Rocco’s playing partner, follows suit with a bogey of his own.

Sunday August 10, 2008 12:59 James Schmehl

James Schmehl:
Word around the course is that the rain is on-and-off. Right now, it appears to be off.
Sunday August 10, 2008 1:04 James Schmehl
1:10
James Schmehl:

I’m sitting next to Brian Hewitt, of the Golf Channel, and he seems to think we may be able to survive ONE suspension – if it lasts for less than 45 minutes, but a drawn-out thunderstorm would likely push play into Monday.

Sunday August 10, 2008 1:10 James Schmehl
1:13
James Schmehl:

Also, we have to take into account that J.B. Holmes isn’t known for his fast play so expect the final grouping to need about five hours to finish their final round. And, of course, it is the final round of a Major so things just typically last longer.

Watching from Dublin Ireland - Padraig (pronounced 'Paw-rig') is on the way back! Thanks for providing these live updates. I'll return the compliment with a visit to Michigan sometime soon! JL
Sunday August 10, 2008 1:13 J Lamont

James Schmehl:

Thanks for the feedback, J. I’m a huge Padraig fan, myself. Just to give you an update on him – he’s currently sleeping. In a bed. Unlike yesterday, when he slept on the locker room floor during the delay.

[Comment From J LamontJ Lamont: ]
Thanks for that James. We're in for a great afternoon - assuming the weather holds up. I hope they don't abandon the event and cut it to 54 holes. Has that ever happened in a Major? Is is allowed in the rules?
Sunday August 10, 2008 1:23 J Lamont
1:23
James Schmehl:

Good question, JL. I’ll have to look it up, but certainly not in the last 20 years. Even if the weather doesn’t hold up today, and for that matter, even if it doesn’t hold up tomorrow – they will finish this thing. Even if it means playing on Tuesday.

Sunday August 10, 2008 1:23 James Schmehl
1:25
Philip Zaroo:
Another member of the media said that the last tournament that had to go until Tuesday was the 2006 Booz Allen Classic in Bethesda, MD. Coincidentally, that tournament was won by the current leader of the PGA Championship:  Ben Curtis.
Sunday August 10, 2008 1:25 Philip Zaroo
1:27
Philip Zaroo:
Maybe Curtis is praying for rain. Either way, nothing short of war will keep them from finishing this major in 72 holes.
Sunday August 10, 2008 1:27 Philip Zaroo
1:31
James Schmehl:
People were talking about adding an * to this year's PGA Championship winner because Tiger isn't in the field. Can you imagine what people would say about the winner if the major was cut short, too? Oh, well - that will never happen.

Phil Mickelson is on the course and will have a birdie chance at No. 1. He's +4, not out of it, but he needs a 65 or 66.

Philip Zaroo:
Padraig, pronounced "Paw-rig" (thanks, J Lamont, from Dublin!), just mushed his drive center-cut. He's looking quite relaxed, and could make a real run.

Philip Zaroo:
The wind is really blowing right now. The media tent keeps getting these gusts from time to time. From the looks of it, the weather system may just pass us by. But if not, we could be in trouble.

Will anyone be able to make a strong run in the final round (67 or better)?
Yes

In other words, Garcia's going double bogey on six.
Sunday August 10, 2008 2:16 Philip Zaroo

Philip Zaroo:
OK, Holmes' pushed drive landed under a tree. I could give him some advice - been in that situation far too often!
Sunday August 10, 2008 2:18 Philip Zaroo
2:19
Philip Zaroo:
Holmes chops at the ball, but smacks a tiny branch above the ball. Not good. He's still under the tree, chatting with his caddie.
Sunday August 10, 2008 2:19 Philip Zaroo
2:20
Josh Slagter:

A disaster for J.B. on the first hole. He just tried to hit out and didn't make it. Now, he just took an unplayable lie. His round could be over before it really starts.

Sunday August 10, 2008 2:20 Josh Slagter
2:20
Philip Zaroo:
It looks like a cable running under the tree is blocking the ball so Holmes may have been allowed to take a free drop. If so, that would be a huge break.
Sunday August 10, 2008 2:20 Philip Zaroo
2:21
Josh Slagter:
Maybe he got a free drop out of the mess because there was  cable running through the trees. If that's the case, CBS waiting for some extra thanks.
Sunday August 10, 2008 2:21 Josh Slagter
2:22
Philip Zaroo:
And that's a negative. Holmes took a drop (one shot too late). He's now lying four. This is not how J.B. wanted to start his final round.
Sunday August 10, 2008 2:22 Philip Zaroo
2:24
Philip Zaroo:
No release on his fifth shot leaves Holmes about 25-30 feet from the hole. He'd LOVE bogey right now...

Philip Zaroo:
excuse me. double bogey.
Sunday August 10, 2008 2:24 Philip Zaroo

It's apparently up to Ben Curtis. If he shoots a solid round, he may be tough to catch. His playing parters already are falling on their swords.

Lefty scores for the second straight hole. He's now at plus 2 for the tourney.

Sunday August 10, 2008 2:25 Philip Zaroo

Josh Slagter:
One slip up by Curtis, though, and plenty of thers are lucking. Garcia is even, Mickelson just went birdie-birdie to get to +2 and David Toms is +1. Oh, and some Paw-rig guy is right there, too.
Sunday August 10, 2008 2:25 Josh Slagter
2:26
Philip Zaroo:
This leaderboard is VERY interesting. Particularly with the wind picking up, a few sprinkles coming down and a miserable first hole by J.B. Holmes.
Sunday August 10, 2008 2:26 Philip Zaroo

Josh Slagter:
Ha ...  "others are lurking," I meant. Too much rain on the brain, I guess.

Holmes just misses his triple bogey putt on the first hole. And he leaves himself another three footer for quad!

Apologies...that wasn't Holmes...I looked down then up and missed a change of camera. Holmes is going for triple now.

Mercifully, he makes it.

Romero drops a birdie on two to get to 1 over. Look out for Pigu. Outside of a couple holes in the fourth round, the guy's outplayed everyone.
Sunday August 10, 2008 2:35 Philip Zaroo
2:40
Philip Zaroo:
Look out now. Phil's making a run. Mickelson's nailed three straight birdies to move to 1 over.
Sunday August 10, 2008 2:40 Philip Zaroo
2:45
Josh Slagter:

Sergio is the man after a birdie-eagle start. He's just one off the lead. If the putter is hot today, he's an excellent pick to win. I'm surprised Phil hasn't revised his prediction by now.

Sunday August 10, 2008 2:45 Josh Slagter
2:45
James Schmehl:
Camilo Villegas misses are relatively easy birdie putt. Must've be karma for stealing that hat from Grimace.

I have revised the prediction. But my horse today is Pigu Romero.
Sunday August 10, 2008 2:46 James Schmehl

Josh Slagter:
Padraig has moved to even par as well. Ben Curtis has quite the star-studded leaderboard to hold off. CBS' prayers to the ratings gods may have paid off overnight.
Sunday August 10, 2008 2:46 Josh Slagter
2:47
Philip Zaroo:
Ummm, not sure what happened there, but those are my last two posts. I think James is communicating telepathically from the course. The next trend in communications...
Sunday August 10, 2008 2:47 Philip Zaroo
2:51
Josh Slagter:
Or, Phil is just trying to mask his latest flip-flop.
Sunday August 10, 2008 2:51 Josh Slagter
2:51
Philip Zaroo:
No, no masking whatsoever. I'm very up front about my waffling. Mmm, waffles...
Sunday August 10, 2008 2:51 Philip Zaroo
2:59
Philip Zaroo:
Henrik Stenson's birdie on two puts advances his cause. He's now joined Curtis and Garcia as the only players under par for the tournament.
Sunday August 10, 2008 2:59 Philip Zaroo
3:03
Philip Zaroo:
Lefty's been hot today, but he sprayed his tee shot into the rough, shy of the bunker, on the short par-4 six. Let's see how Lefty handles the adversity.
Sunday August 10, 2008 3:03 Philip Zaroo
3:03
Josh Slagter:
J.B. Holmes made bogey on No. 2, other players have been eating alive (speaking of waffles). Stick a fork in him. He's done.
Sunday August 10, 2008 3:03 Josh Slagter
3:04
Philip Zaroo:
Curtis' nice sand save on three will give him a short par opportunity.
Sunday August 10, 2008 3:04 Philip Zaroo
3:05
Josh Slagter:
Sixteen of the top 20 players on the leaderboard are under par in the final round so far. Sorry, J.B.
Sunday August 10, 2008 3:05 Josh Slagter
3:05
Philip Zaroo:
He's still a few feet away, though, and this wind is whipping around like we're at the British. It certainly isn't a gimme.
Sunday August 10, 2008 3:05 Philip Zaroo
3:08
Josh Slagter:
Charlie Wi will have a great look at birdie on No. 4 to get to 1 under. Pretty amazing performance for his first PGA. Wi was an All-American golfer at Cal, when some guy named Tiger was stomping around Stanford.
Sunday August 10, 2008 3:08 Josh Slagter
3:08
Philip Zaroo:
And the answer to the question about Mickelson? Poorly. He will handle the adversity poorly. He goes from rough  to bunker. He needs needs a helluva out to save par.
Sunday August 10, 2008 3:08 Philip Zaroo
3:09
Philip Zaroo:
And he gets it! Lefty's a foot away from the stick. He should par, and stay at 1 over.
Sunday August 10, 2008 3:09 Philip Zaroo
3:16
Philip Zaroo:
OK, I'm heading out to the course, but Josh sticking around. Be back in a few.

Harrington moves to 2 under, 1 shot off Sergio's lead. Amazing, this guy was mentally out of it after the first two rounds and admitted as much. But it's clearly mental toughness that has put him back in it. This should be a great finish.

Ben Curtis just   landed on the par-5 12th with his second shot and finished just over. He's had three bogeys in four holes, but a birdie would ease some of that pain.

Padraig wouldn't say he's making a run at Tiger - that's not what his focus is. But he certainly isn't bcking off the challenge. His point is that, as the third ranked player in the world, he tries to focus on improving himself and his game rather than on what Tiger and Phil Mickelson are doing.

No doubting James, this will be headlines, front page news. We love our sport and we love our sporting heros. We've been shaken by disappointments in the past but Padraig has been grinding out really good performances for years now. What makes him special is that he is genuinely nice guy, a real gentleman. He's not arrogant or pompous. He makes speeches that sometiomes make you cringe but he's teh real thing, a nice human being. Golf benefits from guys like him and nice people like Jim Furyk and Padraig bring a lot to the game in an era when money has a loud voice.

James I can confirm that Padraig is on the fron page of the Irish Times today (Monday) punching the air on the 18th at Oakland Hills. (The Irish Times is the New York Times equivalent - sorry I don't know the Michigan equivalent) That's as good as it gets for a sportsperson in Ireland - fantastic!

GOLF/US PGA CHAMPIONSHIP: Who needs Tiger? Nobody does heart-stopping, rollercoaster drama like Pádraig Harrington and, almost defying belief, the 36-year-old Dubliner won the 90th US PGA championship at Oakland Hills last night with a final round 66 for 277, three under, that gave him back-to-back major championship titles and took him into a new universe among the sport's greatest golfing legends.

I couldn’t be happier for Padraig. Like you said, he really is a genuine good guy. Even after his round today, he still found time to meet with the fans and sign autographs – despite the chaotic events that were about to unfold. He’ll answer any question for the media and doesn’t appear to be the arrogant, stuck-up golfer that I have encountered on more than a handful of times.

I won't feel too bad for Padraig - after all, he's won three majors now. You go from having to answer Tiger questions to having to answer Sergio questions all day...!

Oh well. I'm getting a sense that there are going to be a lot more questions about what Mr. Harrington is going to be doing in the future.

And that will bring MLive's coverage of the 90th PGA Championship at Oakland Hills C.C. in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. to a close.
