Kazemi has a decent jumper. It's sort of like Bigfoot, though -- hidden and shy. But I have seen it ... in practice.

My question: Why did EJ cut his hair?
Wednesday February 20, 2013 11:03 The Oregonian

Kazemi just doesn't seem to have much confidence in his jump shot. Altman has been urging AK14 to shoot more, though.

How much value can you put on the oregon baseball sweep in Hawaii. Is oregon really as good as they looked or is Hawaii bad?
Wednesday February 20, 2013 11:04 Steve
11:04
Adam Jude:
EJ's hair seems to be working just fine this season. He has to be on the all-Pac-12 team this season, right?
Wednesday February 20, 2013 11:04 Adam Jude
11:04
The Oregonian:
He's on my ballot. If I had one.
Wednesday February 20, 2013 11:04 The Oregonian
11:05
Adam Jude:
Hawaii is typically pretty good. And going to play there is never easy. Horton says that's always one of the toughest venues to play. They seem to have a sellout of 4,000-plus every night, and if you listen on the radio, the crowd is very much into it. Gets a little nasty at times.
Wednesday February 20, 2013 11:05 Adam Jude
11:05
Adam Jude:
So, yeah, I think that's a really impressive sweep to start the season for the baseball team.

% chance Artis returns for tomorrows game?
Wednesday February 20, 2013 11:06 Ty
11:06
Adam Jude:
Those 7 turnovers against UW weren't all Singler's fault, though. He was breaking in a couple newerish point guards.
Wednesday February 20, 2013 11:06 Adam Jude
11:06
Adam Jude:
Artis? A huge question mark still, but I'd be surprised if he played this week. Let's say, 17 percent chance.

The Oregonian:
Catch us up on Horton, his contract and whether it has an impact on the baseball team.
Wednesday February 20, 2013 11:07 The Oregonian
11:07
Adam Jude:
And even when (if?) Artis is cleared, Altman has made it clear that he will be eased back into the rotation slowly.
Wednesday February 20, 2013 11:07 Adam Jude
11:08
Adam Jude:
Well, Horton was of course brought in from Cal State Fullerton, a national program in college baseball, to restart the Oregon baseball team. To do that, Oregon lured him with a hefty contract, around $450,000 per year, plus generous bonuses, which made him one of the highest-paid college baseball coaches in the country. ...
Wednesday February 20, 2013 11:08 Adam Jude
11:09
Adam Jude:
So when his original five-year deal ended in September, there was some debate about how much he was worth because college baseball programs typically lose money. So it's a delicate balance with a coach of his stature/reputation vs. balancing the budget.

You'd have to think so, right? What Chip did in four years might never be equaled ... and Altman has done wonders with a patchwork roster the past two seasons.

With the Pac-12 getting likely four to five teams the conference seems to be gaining back some of the respect its lost in past years. Do you see the Pac getting exposed in March?

Exposed? Hard to say. A lot of folks, myself included, give the Big Ten and Big East props for beating each other up during conference play ... but sort of frown on others like the Pac-12 for doing the same. ...

But every conference needs balance. If Indiana, which is clearly the No. 1 team IMO, were to run away with the Big Ten, then you might wonder whether they've been "battle tested" going into March. ...

Adam Jude:
... So going through the grind of a tough conference schedule could pay off for the Pac-12, especially if they get 4 or 5 of (gasp!) 6 teams in.

11:15
Adam Jude:
I asked Horton something along those lines last week. If you recall, Altobelli was the leadoff guy to start last season. He was only so-so in that role. Horton likes Altobelli at the No. 9 spot, and Altobelli seems most comfortable there. He's great at "running" Horton's small-ball style.

Adam Jude:
Aaron Jones leaving was a surprise, no doubt. Left a big void at catcher, too, plus the loss of a .300 hitter. All I know is he seemed fed up with baseball and really wanted to be a firefighter.

Are any of our senior football players coming back to town? I wish they would do an appearance after the final bowl game so we could shake hands and wish them well in the NFL or life after football.

Adam Jude:
Not a bad idea. That would be a nice send-off, wouldn't it? I know LMJ stuck around last year for awhile, and some other lesser-know types do, too. But a bunch of the NFL hopefuls (Dion Jordan, Kyle Long, Kenjon Barner) have spent a lot of time in L.A. training for the combine/draft.

In the past the baseball team had been all about pitching and defense. It seemed like in Hawaii a few guys were slugging it around. Does Oregon have a potent offense this year?

11:21
Adam Jude:
According to Christian Jones, Oregon's offense is better than ever. The experience they have coming back -- Payne, Thomas, Healy, Hambright, Garlick, Altobelli -- says a lot. Those guys have been through it and seem like a legitimate CWS contender to me.

Adam, I like your comment about giving props to Big 10 and other conferences while the Pac is frowned upon for doing the same..oh do I ever see that in football (COUGH COUGH SEC!!). Hey Adam, ducks baseball seems legit.. I went to the games in Hawaii and heard the Hawaii coach say Oregon was the best college team he's seen in 5 or 6 years. Is this a team that can win the natty?

Wow. Didn't see that comment from the Hawaii coach. That's high praise, obviously. I think the Ducks should be contenders in the Pac-12, which is always one of the two best conferences ... which means they should also be in the College World Series discussion, too. Should be a fun spring.

This weekend I was able to watch 3 of the 4 baseball games live and free on Hawaii's website. As a Duck baseball fan living in Salem, it sure would be nice if Oregon would stream our games live. They did a couple of years ago. Do you have any idea if they will again this year?
