Ben Nicholson-Smith:
Hey everyone. Looking forward to this week's chat. We'll be debuting our offseason in review series soon with the action slowing down off of the field. In the meantime, let's hear your questions. I'll get to as many as I can in the next hour...

do you think that fringe qualifying offer free agents will look at accepting a bit more after watching kyle loshe struggle?
Wednesday February 27, 2013 3:01 dudley
3:02
Ben Nicholson-Smith:
Yes, I think they will. In general if you're a fringe candidate for a qualifying offer, you want to have a VERY good idea of what's out there for you before declining a qualifying offer.

If the Yankees by some chance clearly out of it by the end of July, do they entertain offers for Cano, Granderson, Hughes, etc.?
Wednesday February 27, 2013 3:02 Ace
3:02
Ben Nicholson-Smith:
Any team would consider offers for free agents if playoffs are obviously out of reach at the end of July. That includes the Yankees. I just don't think the Yankees will be out of the playoff race then.

What are the Brewers doing about there First Base problem?
Wednesday February 27, 2013 3:03 Jake

Ben Nicholson-Smith:
They'll go with internal options before moving on to the Carlos Lee types in free agency. If all else fails there will be multiple options available on the waiver wire toward the end of March.

I expect him to receive and decline a qualifying offer. But we're getting ahead of ourselves!

If Lohse withdrew from the Player's Union, would the 'loss of draft pick' tag follow him?
Wednesday February 27, 2013 3:06 Jay

That's just not happening (I like the outside-the-box idea though!).

I really enjoyed Tim's post about students with front office aspirations... Is a post about being an agent on the way?
Wednesday February 27, 2013 3:06 Jacob

Ben Nicholson-Smith:
That's a really good idea. I've made a note of it.

By the way check out Tim's piece if you haven't done so already:

Do you see the Orioles and Rockies matching up on a trade? For Carlos Gonzalez or someone else?
Wednesday February 27, 2013 3:07 AUSTIN
3:08
Ben Nicholson-Smith:
Nah, I don't see the Orioles acquiring Carlos Gonzalez. Perhaps the Rockies would want some of the Orioles' young pitching, but I don't expect that Baltimore would be eager to part with it.

MLBTR alum Mike Axisa suggested as much on River Ave. Blues this week and I side with Mike on this one. I don't think the Yankees would pay Joba to start.

Have you ever read Doug Glanville's book "The Game From Where I Stand?" I'm reading it now - quite a read.

I have. Enjoyed it. Glanville is an insightful guy.

Wednesday February 27, 2013 3:09 Thomas

I can imagine any team winning the division. That's not a cop out, it's the reality of an oddly balanced division.

The Dodgers are stacked and look good on paper. Do you see me doing any major trade on the deadline?
Wednesday February 27, 2013 3:10 Ned Colleti
3:11
Ben Nicholson-Smith:
I certainly don't see the Dodgers shying away from the big names available in trades this year. Keep in mind that they could do some damage in August, when players can be dealt as long as they clear waivers (remember that's when they got Gonzalez and Crawford).

Do you think that the Red Sox's offseason has been too much of a "middle of the road" approach?
Wednesday February 27, 2013 3:13 Ace
3:14
Ben Nicholson-Smith:
Fair question, but no. They got the best DH available, one of the top catchers available and one of the top starting pitchers available. It's true that Ortiz, Napoli and Dempster aren't superstars, but in baseball you need lots of good players. The Red Sox added lots of good players this year.

[Comment From RickRick: ]
Do you think the Twins part with Justin Morneau before the trade deadline? The organization seems more concerned with saving money than building a contending team.
Wednesday February 27, 2013 3:14 Rick
3:15
Ben Nicholson-Smith:
I can see the Twins trading Morneau if a) he's healthy and b) the Twins are as bad as many expect them to be. The Twins would probably benefit from swapping Morneau for prospects in that scenario.

Did you like how my statement changed after my agent called me? Who needs facial hair, right? Or who needs a policy on it?
Wednesday February 27, 2013 3:15 David Price
3:16
Ben Nicholson-Smith:
Haha, it was amusing to see Price back away from his initial comments. He's doing what he has to do -- playing the game with the fans and media to be sure he doesn't stir up too much controversy -- but I think he made his feelings clear in his initial comments to Morosi.

Wednesday February 27, 2013 3:17 Joe

I think the Reds and Cardinals are markedly better teams than the Pirates. I don't think Pittsburgh will be in the playoffs this year.

Wednesday February 27, 2013 3:20 Ace

Wednesday February 27, 2013 3:21 Matt E

[Comment From joeyjoey: ]
Why is the international spending budget allowed to teams by MLB less than the budget allowed for the draft? Why is MLB restricting how teams spend their money in the international market?
Wednesday February 27, 2013 3:21 joey
3:22
Ben Nicholson-Smith:
MLB teams want to police themselves -- that's one major purpose of the CBA. One way owners police themselves is by imposing limits on spending, including in international free agency. If these limits didn't exist, you'd see owners spending aggressively on international talent (like they did under the previous CBA for players like Chapman).

Should the rays call Myers up to start the season?
Wednesday February 27, 2013 3:23 Greg
3:24
Ben Nicholson-Smith:
No, they should delay his debut to get an extra year of service from Myers. He'll have to spend a few weeks in the minors for the Rays to extend their team control through 2019. It'd be well worth the wait.

I have to admit, Lohse would look very good in a Brewers uniform. I just don't see it happening. Do you see it? If not with the Brewers, then who? Come Opening Day, does Lohse have a job?
Wednesday February 27, 2013 3:24 Andrew
3:25
Ben Nicholson-Smith:
I do think he'd look good in Milwaukee. That said, I don't see the Brewers signing him. I can see Lohse ending up with the Rangers, the Indians or the Angels, to name a few teams. I do think he'll sign by Opening Day.
