Anyone besides Stamkos a lock to start 2008 with the big club?
Friday June 20, 2008 1:02 Ben
1:03
James Mirtle:
I wouldn't say a lock for anyone else, no, but Doughty would get a long look from the Kings, I bet, as they go into a big rebuild
Friday June 20, 2008 1:03 James Mirtle
1:03
James Mirtle:
personally, I don't know that it makes a ton of sense to play players at 18 when that eats one year of a cheap three-year entry deal

Will you watch the draft tonight?
Yes, definitely
 ( 79% )
No, not interesting

I can't find it on TV

A toughie early, James - rank the following in terms of their importance and interest level to you, James: Draft day, trade deadline day, first day of free agency, your girlfriend's birthday.

[Comment From JPJP: ]
How much does the lack of a transfer agreement impact what teams are going to do today, especially in light of the news that the KHL may make a $15 million/year bid for Malkin's services? Can you really draft a Filatov, knowing that you can only pay him up to the entry-level cap while a Russian team can offer him twice as much to play at home and there's nothing you can do about it?
Friday June 20, 2008 1:06 JP
1:07
James Mirtle:
My apologies - there's a bit of lag as we get started here
Friday June 20, 2008 1:07 James Mirtle
1:08
James Mirtle:
With Filatov, he's said he's 100 per cent committed to coming to play in North America, so that's not as much of a worry
Friday June 20, 2008 1:08 James Mirtle
1:08
James Mirtle:
I think teams definitely have to use caution this year in taking Europeans though; some of it might just be doing some advance scouting

[Comment From JeremyJeremy: ]
Mmm... nothing like an emotionally-scarring tour of duty for an 18 year-old defender on a rebuilding team. Most of these top-end blueliners will probably get some more time to mature.
Friday June 20, 2008 1:09 Jeremy
1:09
James Mirtle:
I think so, too, but we've seen teams at the bottom rushing prospects into duty under a cap

[Comment From JonathanJonathan: ]
So any Sabre rumblings out there? And Im sure Ray Emery would love to play for the Sabres, since he has shown such fondness for the City of Buffalo.
Friday June 20, 2008 1:09 Jonathan
1:10
James Mirtle:
I think Emery, at this point, will play anywhere.

For those that missed it, he was placed on waivers this morning and will likely be bought out

James Mirtle:
as for other Sabres rumblings, they want a veteran defenceman, but will likely do something on July 1
Friday June 20, 2008 1:11 James Mirtle
1:11
James Mirtle:
Yes. There is so much talk right now that I guarantee there will be trades made today and tomorrow.   We saw the Vokoun deal last year, Luongo the year before -- maybe another goalie swap?

I just find it hilarious that Filatov and his family have basically bent over backwards to diminish the "Russian Factor," and people still have to question him. He's yet to denounce his homeland completely, after all.

James--with moving salaries getting harder and harder, will the Sabres be able to offload any of their surplus forwards (Afingenov, Kotalik, Connolly, et al), and for anything more than a bag of pucks if they can?
Friday June 20, 2008 1:15 BuffloSoldier
1:16
James Mirtle:
I think they might have to wait until after free agency starts up; some teams are going to get left out and turn to teams like Buffalo

1:16
[Comment From JPJP: ]
Related to my last question, might the transfer agreement situation and the KHL shot across the bow add at least the slightest bit of credibility to the Malkin trade rumours in that if Shero isn't 100% sure that Geno would resist an offer to double his salary to play back home, isn't he better off getting something for his #2 asset? This is, after all, a player who ditched one pro contract to come over here in the first place.

Friday June 20, 2008 1:18 saskhab
1:19
James Mirtle:
good question. No, but I've heard anywhere from $53- to $56-million

that's something they'll need to figure out before July 1.   Some teams, like Calgary, can't sign players they have because of a lack of cap space

What does the Chris Mason trade do to the goalie market? It's been relatively flat for the last couple of seasons, but even so, a 4th round pick for a guy 1 yr removed from being a good starter seems fairly low.
Friday June 20, 2008 1:23 Jonathan - CoppernBlue
1:23
James Mirtle:
there's really not much of a market... I took a look at it earlier in the off-season and there are really only about 8-9 backup jobs out there
Friday June 20, 2008 1:23 James Mirtle
1:24

What do you think the Caps will do? With the multitude of NHL defensemen, depth in young prospects, and multitude of draft picks this year they have the ammunition to make a big move. A trade up into the top 10? A trade for one of the NHL players being rumored on the move? McPhee has a chance to make a big splash.

the pens need to resign hossa, keep malkin and staal for only next season. after next season, resign one of the two and trade the other. with the new cap era, you can't afford to pay a third line center with first line center money.

I honestly believe that there are some teams out there who need a guy like Darryl Sydor to lead their young guys.
