Welcome everyone to DRAFT DAY 2008!

With tons of news and reading material, we're ready to go.   Patriots Insider will continue to provide you live updates on the site, both in this blog, and the forums HERE.

We're new to   this blog software,  but other Scout.com sites swear by it.   Bear with us as we work out any kinks that arise.

Members are encouraged to use the Insider's Lounge to get updates on what we're hearing behind the scenes... as in the Trade rumors that the Patriots want to move out of the No,. 7 spot.   see the RUMOR MILL  (in).

There was far too much info to post on the front page, so be sure to check the Archives for all the stories you may have missed.   We have multiple player interviews which were published recently.   There were too many to scroll across the front page, so the ONLY place you'll find them is HERE in the ARCHIVES.

Again we welcome you to Patriots Insider and look forward to bring you a lot of great coverage throughout the weekend.

Patriots offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia has worked wonders with the players provided by Scott Pioli and Bill Belihcick.   As fans know, the team usually doesn't spend high draft picks on the offensive line.     With two third round picks, the Patriots could use one on an interior lineman.

Though we expect mostly defense to go on Day 1, it's possible Scarnecchia gets someone who could help the unit in the first part of the Draft today.

A couple of recent interviews by Ed Thompson should get you excited if New England opts to pull the trigger and claim one of these guys.   Of particular interest is John Greco, the lineman from Toledo.

"I'm often compared to him," Greco tole the Toledo Blade. "It seems like that's how it's been since I got here. It's not a bad name to be mentioned with."

Greco spent some time with Thompson to go in depth about his Draft preparations, his thoughts on Kaczur and more.   Draft: Greco Could Follow Kaczur... Again? Premium Story

Do you see the patriots trading up? Maybe to 4 or 5 to leapfrog the Jets.

Josh, Thanks for the question.
Since we've been hearing the rumors, we do believe the Patriots are trying to move.   Adam Caplan wrote earlier this week about what insiders around the league believe the Patriots will do.

AFC Pre-Draft Insider Version 1.0 Premium Story - We're taking a look at the possible draft selections of seven AFC teams in this update.

Moving up however is an expensive proposition.   And the real question is why do they want so desperately to leapfrog the Jets?

Three players are worth moving up  in our opinion:   Chris Long, Glenn Dorsey and Jake Long.   Jake is already gone to the Dolphins.     So the concern over getting in front of the Jets -- who reportedly like Darren McFadden, Vernon Gholston and Branden Albert --- is   why?

Trading up  may be more media hype than reality.   Keith Rivers is also considered a great fit for the Patirots.   That's one player who would excel on either team (New England or New York).

We hav more on the trade rumors in the insider's lounge, but this at least gives you some of what we've heard.

ESPN's Michael Smith recently reported that the Raiders are leaning on taking Darren McFadden at the No. 4 spot if they stay there. The possiblity that the Patriots or the Jets move up to 4 remains according to Smith.

In order to move up to the fourth spot (1800 points) from the seventh spot (1500 points), according to this Draft Trade chart, the Patriots would need to give up a pick or a player worth 300 points.   The Patriots currently own the 62 pick in the Draft with their second round pick (284 points).

More reports continue to stream in on possible Draft day trades.   Stand by, this will get interesting.

GR,   maybe this is best left to the Lounge rats who are dying to konw what the Patriots will do.

We believe that the Patriots will trade the pick.   The questoin will be which team wants which player at No. 7.

Word is that the Chiefs are trying to play the Patriots vs the Jets vs other teams.     We're not so certain that the Patriots are  desperate to sign Gholston.   Chris Long would be a better selection.   ESPN continues to insist that Long will go to the Rams at No. 2.

Hey JS. It was mentioned on TV that the Chiefs, Jet's & Ravens are engaged in trade talks. Then I see here that the Chiefs may be trying to play the Jet's and Patriots against each other. This can only happen if the Patriots are looking to trade up correct? If they are looking to trade back, New Orleans and Carolina are possible partners. I would say the Chiefs are looking to play them. Your thoughts?

Long to St. Louis?:
Scout.com insider Tom Marino reported yesterday that the St Louis Rams were set to take Chris Long with the second pick in the Draft.   ESPN is also reporting that news today.

If Long goes No. 2 then  that leaves  Glenn Dorsey, Darren McFadden, Matt Ryan  and Vernon Gholston as the next best picks available.

Atlanta Wants  Ryan
Matt Ryan, QB out of Boston College is in play.   The teams believed ot be most interested in Ryan  include  Atlanta, Kansas City and Baltimore.   If Long is not the  pick by the Rams, then there may be a trade with one of the clubs desperately seeking a quarterback.

Dorsey Dropping?
The news is that concern over Glenn Dorsey's leg injury is something that is giving teams reason to pause.   When Dorsey is healthy, there is little doubt that he is the best defensive lineman in the Draft.   However, Sedrick Ellis may be a better pick for some teams not willing to run the risk that Dorsey's injuries could become a concern down the road.

JS -- is your best case scenario that Ryan and/or McFadden are available at #7, and the Pats can trade down and pick up one of the good but similar CBs plus another pick? Or what?

Blue,

There are a number of possibilities for trading down.   If McFadden and Ryan are gone, the Patriots (and other teams around them) lose a lot of  leverage.  As mentioned in the Lounge Trade Rumor thread, it appears that the Pats are willing to move back to select a player who gives them a comparable production and potential  at a lower cost.

JS, the trade scenarios are many. One has the Patriots trading with the Cowboys for their two number one pics. If Ryan is gone if a team contact the Patriots to move back into the first round to get a Flacco or Brohm what are your opinions on whether the Patriost should trade again or take a player that they need now?
Saturday April 26, 2008 2:23 Morpheus

Morph, I'm of the belief that the Patriots would like to trade down, and should trade down.   This Draft appears to ahve a lot of meat in the middle of round one, all the way throuhg the second round.

Players the Patirots could still acquire by trading down.

CB Antoine Cason, Terrence Wheatley, Brandon Flowers
OLB  Cliff Avril,  Quentin Groves,  Bryan Kehl
ILB Beau Bell,  Jerod Mayo
DL Kentwan Balmer, Derrick Harvey

They've either met with, worked out or had these guys visit Foxborough.   I just don't see that much of a impetus to trade up in this Draft.

If you didn't listen to the show with Marino, we suggest listening in to his guest appearance this week.   Marino not only offers his opinion on the top Draft prospects (Long, Gholston, Jenkins, McKelvin) but he also offered up some sleeper picks the Patriots could be interested in.

The move to draft Jerod Mayo is a surprise pick for the Patriots as it was widely believed that the team would select a top tier cornerback.   According to NFL Scout Tom Marino, the Mayo pick was the best move at linebacker for the Patriots according to his Draft rankings.   With Rivers off the board, Mayo makes the most sense.

Noticed how I mentioned Mayo first when I mentioned who was left prior to the pick. :) And I asked Marino about Mayo vs Rivers during the show on Thursday. Sheesh I almost feel like a guru. Almost....lol I told you (JS) that I liked Mayo. Now will the Patriots make another trade? Dang I wish today was three round instead of two.

It's possible GR he may be.....I'm wondering if the Patriots will keep all of the third round picks...or will they trade the one they got from Oakland or the Saints and more up. I'm wishing they could talk some team into taking their third rounder which is like a fourth rounder

Wondered if the Patriots had trade with Carolina could they have gotten a fourth and still drafted Mayo? But since that did not happen, will the Patriots REACH for a player in the third round if they keep their picks? Would they draft Bowman if they kept all of their third round picks

More on the Saints attempts to get to the No. 5 spot.

From a KC Insider:
The Saints offered the 10th overall pick, their 7th round pick this year
and their number one.  KC would have done the deal if it was a second
this year or a third this year.

Wonder how much better Mayo is than David Harris was last year -- Harris would've helped us last year, and he would've been cheaper. Great tackler, and faster than Mayo according to Scout's 4.65 time (though ESPN gave a much better 40 time, I think).

Our 3 third round picks equal 569 points on the draft value chart: that's a top of the second round pick. Man, I hope we trade up and get Cason or someone else who can battle for a starting position. That would still leave us with a late 2nd rounder too.

Will the Patriots now trade their second round draft pick for a fourth and fifth round this year or a third this year and a fourth next year OR will they try and move up. Lastly or will they just stand pat? (no pun intended)

Some updates to pass along:

The last time  the Patriots selected  a linebacker in the first round:  1999  Andy Katzenmoyer.  Before that was in 1994 (Willie McGinest).

The last Tennessee player taken in the first round by the Patriots: Roland James DB (1980)

I wish they would package something and move up in the second round, however they need some young players, so I would just package one and move up if there is someone available like a top 5 or CB still there. However BB is probably waiting until the middle of round 2 to see how it goes. If the Patriots get lucky and get a player that can play or challenge for major playing time in round 2, tomorrow can really be interesting.

Tracy  Porter was just selected by the New Orleans Saints.   The Patriots may want to move up in the second round if there's a run on cornerbacks.   New England is thought to be targeting corner with their next pick.

Looking toward No. 62
Don't be surprised if the Patriots decide to select an outside linebacker with the next pick .   Though corner is considered a priority at this spot, New England expressed significant interest in linebackers both inside and outside during their pre-draft visits and workouts.

Names to keep in mind:
Cliff Avril, Tavares Gooden, Shawn Crable

Other options at No 62
Tight End.   Although the Patirots signed veteran MArcus Pollard, it's possible that they will add  another  tight end via the Draft.    One player they have shown interest in is Jermichael  Finley, Texas.

Dan Connor's slide to the middle of round two is rather surprising.   Considered a first round talent by many draft experts, seeing Connor slip to the 50th spot must be unnerving for the Penn State alum.

GR --

I was just about to post that the Patriots may be intrested in moving to select Groves who would have been a good fit.   The Jaguars apparently liked him as well.   If you recall, the Jaguars appeared to target the same players as the Patirots last year. (Jon Beason).

Groves to the Jaruars in a trade ahead of Pittsburgh -- another 3-4 defense.

We don't expect the team to take another wide receiver with this pick though two players they showed intrest in James Hardy, and Malcolm Kelly are off the board.   The team also showed interest in Dexter Jackson, most notably for his return skills.
