What do you see as the depth chart for receivers once the season rolls around?
Thursday August 7, 2008 5:31 Tyler
5:33
Mike Triplett:

Hey Tyler, Obviously Colston's No. 1, and I think David Patten is a very underrated No. 2. He's getting lost in all this Arrington and Meachem hype.

After that, Devery Henderson needs to clearly win the No. 3 job if he wants to make the team. ... Unfortunately for him, I don't think he will, especially since he's out with the hamstring right now.

So I think there's room for Meachem, Arrington and Lance Moore. Copper will make the team as a sixth receiver/special teamer if he beats out the other tight ends and linebackers and safeties, etc. who play special teams.

Which kicker do you see getting the majority of the balls tonight and ultimately winning?
Thursday August 7, 2008 5:33 Craig
5:35
Teddy Kider:
Hey Craig -- I think we'll probably see both kickers getting about equal  opportunities tonight, just because it's the first time out.  But from what we've seen from Mehlhaff's leg, and with where he was taken in the  draft,  I think he could prove to be the Saints' primary guy by season's end. Gramatica, however, will get opportunities to prove he can do it, too.

Where do you see McKenzie on opening day against Tampa?
Thursday August 7, 2008 5:35 Tyler
5:36
Mike Triplett:

Hey again Tyler, you're dominating this chat so far. ... That's a good question. I think McKenzie will be in the starting lineup, mostly because I think ACL recoveries are becoming more and more routine, and he hasn't suffered any setbacks so far. The real question is how effective he'll be. He's 32 years old and he plays a position that demands speed and the ability to cut on a dime. ... The best thing about McKenzie is his confidence. He believes he can shut down the top receivers in the game, and he thrives on going against them.

Kevin Spain, T-P:
Guys, tell everyone what it's like finally seeing some live action after spending all this time at practice in the searing heat in Jackson
Thursday August 7, 2008 5:38 Kevin Spain, T-P
5:40
Mike Triplett:

A follow-up to that cornerback question: This is easily the most muddled spot on the team so far. They've been using McKenzie, Jason David, Randall Gay, Usama Young, Aaron Glenn and Jason Craft with the first-team defense and nickel packages, and any one of them could win a top 3 job or be off the team by the end of the month. Rookie Tracy Porter is in that mix, too, and he's supposed to be back on the practice field Saturday after recovering from his hamstring injury.

It looks like the starters will be Gay and David tonight, with Young coming in first off the bench in nickel packages. Each one of these games will be a huge audition for all the corners.

Thursday August 7, 2008 5:40 Mike Triplett
5:40
Teddy Kider:
Kevin, I think it's going to be really interesting to see these guys go up against another team. It's often difficult to tell exactly who got how much better in the offseason from training camp, because guys are playing against their teammates. It will be interesting to see, for instance, if Meachem and Arrington can impress in a live game, and if Bush can show some moves he maybe didn't have before. Also, first look at the new defense, although it might be difficult to see completely if McKenzie and Vilma are not out there.
Thursday August 7, 2008 5:40 Teddy Kider
5:41
Mike Triplett:
One more note about the corners: Anquan Boldin is OUT tonight with a hamstring injury. But Larry Fitzgerald is IN, and he'll put David and Gay to the test right from the start.

[Comment From TylerTyler: ]
I've been hearing good things about Simoneau. He's obviously not going to start at MLB, so why don't the Saints start grooming him to start over Shanle? Obviously the talent difference is fairly drastic, and I know it wouldn't be the easiest transition to make, but if it worked it would be well worth it.
Thursday August 7, 2008 5:41 Tyler
5:43
Mike Triplett:
That's a good point about Simoneau, but it would really be a slap in teh face to the guy to tell him he's lost his job before his replacement is even healthy enough to start in this first game. ... And it's not like Shanle is obviously worse than Simoneau. I'd grade them as pretty much equal. Simoneau's value is that he can be the top backup at both middle and weakside.

I'm a huge Vilma backer, by the way, but you can't 100 percent rule out Simoneau in that battle. He was supposed to be replaced by Danny Clark and Brian Simmons each of the last two years, and it never happened.

How will the lack of Colston impact tonight's game?
Thursday August 7, 2008 5:44 Nola
5:44
Teddy Kider:
Nola, not having Colston in the game obviously will affect the outcome. But I think, because it's the first preseason game and as long as Colston can make it back in time for regular season, not having Colston in there will be great -- it's the perfect opportunity to see if some other receiver, especially some of the guys who have been talked about so much in training camp, can step up. Can Meachem and Arrington perform well and consistently? Can someone like Lance Moore, who we saw hook up for a TD with Brees in the scrimmage, make the team?

Is Bush the starter tonight at RB and who will be the first reliever, Stecker or Thomas? Also, what is the depth chart of kickoff and punt returners?
Thursday August 7, 2008 5:45 Chad
5:46
Mike Triplett:
To be honest, I don't know exactly how they plan to use Bush, Thomas and Stecker yet, but I'll be very interested to find out. I think the No. 1 item on Sean Payton's checklist this offseason was figuring out how to maximize Bush's value as an offensive threat -- and he learned from last year that it's NOT as a traditional tailback. Ideally, he'd like to get back to what Deuce and Reggie did in '06. But with Deuce resting, I think we'll see Bush get about 50 percent of the carries with the first-team offense, with Stecker and Thomas taking the others in a rotation. ... Bush will probably catch two or three passes. And I'm predicting at least a 12-yard gain from him as he's eager to prove last year was a fluke. Maybe even a 44-yarder like two years ago at Tennessee.
Thursday August 7, 2008 5:46 Mike Triplett
5:46
[Comment From AlvinAlvin: ]
Why does everyone seem to be giving up on Devery? I know he's inconsistent with his hand, but what he brings to the table is far superior to Lance. He was a total bust on retunrs last year and he defintely can't match Devery in the deep threat category.
Thursday August 7, 2008 5:46 Alvin
5:48
Teddy Kider:
Alvin, I don't think everyone has given up on Devery Henderson yet. But the reason why there might be doubts at this point is because of what we've seen from other guys in camp -- Moore has been making plays when people are watching, and Meachem and Arrington have gotten attention because of their novelty. Also, Devery doesn't bring any added value to special teams -- Moore could win a spot on the team because of something like punt returning.

What is the problem with Shockie. Is it serious?
Thursday August 7, 2008 5:48 MIchael

Mike Triplett:
Good question. ... I think Shockey might be nursing a fresh ankle tweak in addition to last year's leg and ankle injuries, but the Saints keep saying he's just being brought along slowly as a precaution. Either way, he does get out on the practice field for a decent amount of work each day, so I don't think it's anything serious.

He's also still learning this new offense and playbook, so he's not ready to get thrown in with the first team just yet. I expect him to start on Week 1, but he'll probably be better in November than September. ... Either way, he still knows how to catch a TD in the red zone.

Thursday August 7, 2008 5:51 James
5:52
Teddy Kider:
Overall, I think a lot of people have been impressed with what Deuce has done so far in camp, even if he obviously hasn't been at 100 percent. I also think there are mixed opinions from people who have watch McAllister so far -- some think the comeback may be hopeless, others think he will be back strong, and some are in between. I think he probably will contribute something this year, maybe even by opening day, but the Saints certainly have to be ready for him not to do much. He won't be playing tonight, and we probably won't see a whole lot from him preseason.

Which baby players do you see making good plays in the second half when the big dogs are out the game?
Thursday August 7, 2008 5:52 Jack
5:54
Mike Triplett:
Hey Jack, I fully expect to see Adrian Arrington catch like 7 passes for 90 yards and a touchdown, just to add to his legend. ... I definitely think Arrington has been overhyped a bit -- and I'm guilty of it -- but what he keeps doing is making big plays that turn your head, and that's how you make a football team. Like Pierre Thomas did last year.

I think young offensive linemen Carl Nicks and Jermon Bushrod will continue to impress, but it's so hard to notice offensive linemen unless you're breaking down game film.

And I expect to hear linebacker Marvin Mitchell's name a bunch tonight. He's been making a bunch of plays throughout camp, and he'll get a ton of playing time tonight with Vilma out.

That's a great question, by the way, especially to give people a reason to watch in the second half. I'll squeez in a couple more names in a minute as they come to me.

Teddy Kider:
Don, your heart should be OK. The truth is, Brees should prove to be one of the best in the league, and he has a lot of weapons around him. If the Saints can figure out how to use Bush well, and Colston has a good year with another receiver also performing at his peak, the offense should be fine. And on defense, all of the offseason moves mean there really should be a whole new look. There probably will be nine or so key guys out tonight -- none are too serious, and if they all come back, the Saint should be in good shape.

What is your opinion on Sedrick Ellis, how much of a impact do you see him mack on the defense this year?
Thursday August 7, 2008 5:56 James
5:58
Mike Triplett:
Sedrick Ellis is starting tonight at the three-technique spot while Brian Young is out with a knee injury. ... Of course, if Young was healthy, Ellis might be starting next to him at the nose tackle spot.

It's hard to say exactly who will be the "starters" at the tackle positions this season because they'll do a ton of rotating. But one way or another, Ellis will see the most snaps of any tackle. He can play both positions, and he already looks like he can play them at a very high level. I've noticed both his power and his athleticism during the past week -- sometimes on the same play. Stamina is always the big issue with big tackles like him. But in a game like tonight, I expect him to make a couple highlights that will get everyone excited.

Mark Brunell is getting on up there in age. Do we need to worry about our back-up QB's?
Thursday August 7, 2008 5:59 Chad Pennington

Teddy Kider:
Brunell is an interesting question. I expected to see a good scrimmage from Brunell and a not-so-good one from Palko the other day. I saw the opposite, with Brunell not making much happen and Palko showing throws he hadn't made all of camp. It will be very interesting to see both play tonight, Brunell in the second quarter and Palko in the second half -- but going into this game, I would say, yes, backup QB probably is an area where the Saints could improve.

what do the saints see in Jason David? why is he considered still fighting to be a starter has he shown that much improvement in pratice?
Thursday August 7, 2008 6:00 Robert

Mike Triplett:

David probably makes about as many plays on the ball as any cornerback in practice. I probably write his name down every day for getting a hand on the ball, etc. But I also write his name down almost every day for getting  beat. It's just a matter of which will win out -- his natural playmaking instincts, or his inconsistency.

The Saints need cornerbacks who can make plays just as bad as they need guys who simply won't get toasted. They force very few interceptions and game-changing moments back there.

That all being said, I've been really impressed by Randall Gay throughout camp for his consistency, and I fully expect him to win a starting job ahead of David.

How are we continuously trying to downgrade Lance Moore, he has great speed. A kick returner is greatly affected by his blocking and he has shown very good hands as a reciever. Also Brees has said himself he is one of his favorite recievers.
Thursday August 7, 2008 6:01 Grady
6:03
Teddy Kider:
Based on what I've seen so far, I would agree that Lance Moore cannot be downgraded right now. Lately, he has made plays, he looks comfortable on returns, and Payton and Brees have only good things to say. I think he's in a position to make the team if he makes plays, especially returning, in these preseason games -- and we should see him tonight in with the first-team offense.

Mike Triplett:
That's my favorite question every week in these chats. Can we trade the guy that we hate? ... If the Saints don't think Bullocks is good enough to start, I doubt the other 31 teams are beating down the door for him. But he'll make this team, probably as a backup to Kaesviharn, and he's still got some potential because of his natural athleticism -- a lot like David, in that sense. The improvements in the front seven will make everyon ein the secondary look better.

Same goes with Devery, by the way, for the person who asked earlier if the Saints could trade him for a linebacker.

Teddy Kider:
I didn't see a whole lot from Skyler, and I thought he probably would be on his way out -- until that scrimmage. He still has a lot of work left, and he needs a few huge plays in preseason games. He needs to prove he is the best returner on the team, and it could come down to  Green and Moore for one spot. (This is the  drama of preseason football.)
Also, Vilma is out tonight.

Does Young have a shot at being the starting corner this year?
Thursday August 7, 2008 6:08 Youphilme

Mike Triplett:

Young has an opportunity to win a starting job, especially if McKenzie suffers any setbacks. ... But I think he's more realistically battling David/Gay, Jason Craft, Tracy Porter and Aaron Glenn for the No. 3/nickel back role.

It looks like the coaches are going to give Young a shot at that. I was surprised to see him ahead of Craft in the rotation for tonight. But that could also be because Craft is a known commodity, and they need to see what they have in Young -- another standout athlete who needs to prove he can play with consistency.

Honestly, I don't expect a whole lot from this game. I don't expect to know how good the defense is, because Vilma and McKenzie won't be in there. We also won't see what the running game will be, because McAllister is out. What you'll get from this game is probably the early edge on some guys trying to make the team -- can Moore or Green return one for a touchdown? Also, maybe we'll see a little on how the defensive line will function this season.

Why does everyone want to give a Lance Moore a roster spot and talk about Special Teams? He clearly was not as good as advertised last year. When Devery Henderson is a proven Deep Threat that this team needs.
Thursday August 7, 2008 6:10 MR LAW
6:12
Mike Triplett:
Hey Mr. Law, I keep seeing this exact debate, but look at it this way. It's NOT a battle between Devery and Moore for a roster spot. ... Devery is battling Meachem and Arrington for the No. 3 receiver role. If Devery's not a top three receiver, why keep him on the team? For four or five snaps per game in four-receiver sets? ... Moore, however, is battling Skyler Green for the No. 1 punt returner/kickoff returner job. Reggie Bush is only a part-time return man, and Green and Moore are the only other guys who have been returning punts in practice.

Moore also happens to be a decent No. 4 receiver who can be an injury replacement and catch a few balls per game. ... The same goes for Terrance Copper, one of the most valued special teams players, who can also catch a few balls per game.

Thursday August 7, 2008 6:15 Rob
6:16
Mike Triplett:

Reasonable? I wouldn't go that far. ... Sure, it's possible, but the Saints just went 10-6 in the greatest season in team history two years ago. I think a solid defense gets them back to a similar level.

I do consider the Saints the favorites in the NFC South, though, and it would be a disappointment if they don't make the playoffs. The HUGE turning point in this season will be that London game. If they win, then it will be easy to get past the hangover from that trip. If they lose, it could become a source of bitterness.

Great point, Caleb. Poor Fujita. He's like Brees and Colston and Patten and some of the offensive linemen -- guys who are so good and reliable at their jobs that we don't bother to write about them (or ask about them) this time of year.

Fujita looks great, and I think he'll only benefit by having more talent and speed around him. That's one of the positions on this team you don't have to worry about. ... So now we can go back to not talking about him anymore.

Hey Robert, like we said before, Simoneau is probably the top backup at weakside linebacker and middle linebacker. Marvin Mitchell has been playing mostly in the middle so far. And the strongside backup is underrated veteran Troy Evans, who also might be the best special teams defender on the team. ... Really, it's not a bad group of 6. Young certainly has some more opportunities in front of him with guys out, and if he can take advantage, then yes, it will help. The most obvious place where younger guys are getting a chance to prove themselves is at receiver -- a lot of guys are getting time with Brees now that Colston and Henderson are sitting. Hey Joel, I don't think so. I think the Saints learned from their mistakes last year, and if Deuce isn't 100 percent, they'll do a better job of sharing the running load between Bush, Thomas and Stecker, while making sure that Bush stays in his most effective role.

I think a healthy Deuce will make them a lot better and a lot more versatile. He's best in the fourth quarter of games when he's got more left in the tank thatn the worn-out d-linemen. ... But this offense has so many weapons, the only two guys they can't afford to lose are Brees and Colston.

Well, I think the key may not be the starting D-line, but rather the overall D-line. This unit should be deep and have a bunch of different options, and it will be interesting to see how quarterbacks -- and offenses in general -- can adjust to the new unit that the Saints throw at them. This should be a huge  strength for the Saints if everything works out. And opposing quarterbacks certainly will be worried.

Mike, you're awesome, but you're wrong :) A 12 - 4 record is reasonable for us this year. We have made so many upgrades that we are definitely capable of winning 12 games. Mike Triplett:

You're absolutely right about the first part Rob. ... And I agree that the Saints have the potential to be better than they've ever been. But really, my answer is more about the parity in the NFL. I don't think I'd predict any team to go 12-4 outside of New England and Indianapolis. ... If the last two years have taught you anything as a Saints fan, it's that this league is just unpredicable.

Like I said, I like them to win the South, and I'd feel safer with a 10-6 prediction.

Thomas is an interesting question, one I've noticed a lot on this chat,  and I think it all goes back to McAllister and the running game. This, I think, is an even bigger question mark than people realize at this point -- we really don't know exactly what we'll see from Bush, McAllister or Thomas. Will we see more of Thomas? Probably, unless McAllister is somehow the same as he was two seasons ago. But it also depends on what role the Saints see for Bush. Oops, my bad Harry. It's a little hectic around here right now. But it looks like you guys think the Saints will keep it close to the vest. And, based on what they did last preseason, you might be right.

Mike Triplett:
Jason David and Randall Gay will start tonight with Mike McKenzie out. ... If McKenzie was healthy, I'm not positive who we'd see with him. Early in camp, it was McKenzie and David. But Gay has had a few turns in the starting lineup with McKenzie, too.

Usama Young will enter the game when the Saints go to nickel ... Gay will move inside into the nickel-back spot, and Young will take Gay's place on the outside.

Ah, "Yes" is catching up.   I would venture last year's performance is the biggest reason ... folks can be a little gunshy about proclaiming improvement when money is involved.

I know that everyone thinks that every year is "THE year" but the secondary is going to look 10 x's better with such a better D line. What do you guys think?
Thursday August 7, 2008 6:42 MATRIX
6:44
Dave Gladow, NOLA.com:
I like that attitude, and I agree with it.   The D-Line has immense potential this year, and Mike nailed it earlier ... the depth will be key

On another note, the pregame coverage on ESPN has been VERY preoccupied with Brett Favre.   I always get annoyed by that.   Wasn't the original point of pregame to talk about the game at hand?   It never seems to end up that way...
Thursday August 7, 2008 6:44 Dave Gladow, NOLA.com
6:44
Kevin Spain, T-P:

I do agree with that Matrix. If the D-line can stop the run, get pressure on the opposing quarterback, they can hide a secondary with problems. That's really what's going on in New England. That team is very good up front, but not that great in the backfield.

Dave, I agree. But Brett Favre is the story of the day, and ESPN is driven by the story of the day. Plus, he's now in New York. He won't get that favorable coverage all the time like he did in Green Bay.
