Who's the real King of Beijing - Phelps or Bolt?(08/22/2008)
8:56
Laurie Lawrence:
Hi, Laurie Lawrence. Great to be with you this morning. Even though it's a hazy day in Beijing it's been bright on the horizon for Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt. Obviously people think Bolt is a cool dude but for my money nothing comes near Phelps' performance in the pool. It got to such a stage that Phelps should have been allowed to sit in the stands, given the gold and everyone else swim for second and third.

Love to know your thoughts. Fire away. Phelps is King!

[Comment From Mark from BrisbaneMark from Brisbane: ]
I believe the achievements cannot be compared but since we are comparing them I believe that they would be equally great and legendary. What Bolt did on the track was just as good as what Phelps did in the pool. I dont think there will be anyone in the near furture will be able to repeat what they did let alone in the same Games... but I'd like to be proven wrong haha.

[Comment From EmmaEmma: ]
Serious you can't even compare the two athletes. Sure Phelps my may mode gold medals but I'd like to see him try run what Bolt can.. Don't think so, like wise for Bolt trying to swim one of Phelps races. They have each trained differently for different sports. Phelps is the King of the pool and Bolt is king of the track. Simple as that.

Laurie Lawrence:
I agree that Phelps is King of the Pool and Bolt is King of the Track, however Bolt is so fortunate that he has more natural ability than Phelps and I do believe that there will be another natural athlete that will eclipse Bolt because his energy system is only in the 9 - 20s range. Whereas Phelps needs to refine his skills and work hard over events that go from 47s to 4m.

They say that Bolt is the greatest ever, fair enough he has the worlds fastest 100m and 200m. But how does he compare to the likes of Michael Johnson and Carl Lewis? I think it's a bit premature to say he is the best ever.... One of the very best ... sure ... but best ever ....let's wait and see!

The training regimes would still require a tremendous amount of skill, acquisition. I spoke to Bob Bowman, Phelps' coach, yesterday and one winter Phelps trained short course in order to perfect his underwater dolphin technique that he has used so successfully to dominate the world's best on turns at these Olympics. His perseverence has in fact created a fifth stroke. In order to get this fish-like movement underwater it requires tremendous core body strenght. As a result, in addition to his water work three times a week for an hour, he works on a series of of medicine ball exercises.

I agree Laurie. Although Bolt has achieved an unbelievable result, I wouldnt compare him to Phelps unless he won the 400m as well. Phelps also has the added advantage that he has a strong team behind him for the relays and more races that he can compete in. Different endurance and power though, Bolt cant Skip the 100 and 200 whereas Phelps has a few different styles he can do for each distance. Both champions, wish they were Aussies!

Emma, don't be so naive as to say they couldn't compete in each others events. That's obvious. But it is human nature to compare and contrast Don't be such a fence-sitter and try to make a call on who you think is the better athlete. Personally, I'll back Phelps all the way. I know there is the arguement for him having an advantage by having more events to compete in....but they're still difficult, and he smashed them all. I loved watching Bolt though. He's an amazing runner, and he's the king of cool whereas Phelps is just a massive nerd.

In my opinion Phelps' mind is stronger than Thorpes'. He is able to refocus and look at the next Olympic Games. Phelps' real strength is his ability to be motivated by positive or negative influences that come into him. As an 11-year-old he was poolside to see  his sister Whitney miss the US Olympic team by 100th of a second. As a result this setback for his sister became a strong motivating force in his quest for 8 from 8 which, on the positive side, since a young age group swimmer he has concentrated on top 10 national age group times and as a result saw him break a world record at 15 years of age - unheard of in men and only achieved by Ian Thorpe and Steve Holland.

Whilst I think Phelps is great and also Bolt pretty damm good - Phelps has an unfair advantage in that he has the opportunity to do multiple events over the same distance if it was only the 100m & 200M he would have how many golds? To compete in something like 19 swims in 9 days is quite remarkable and win 9/9 with 8WRs. But it is so hard to compare greats from two entirely different sports. Its like trying to compare Bradman with Jordan..! I still prefer Phelps though.

Laurie, You can be forgiven for picking Phelps as you have a natural bias for swimmers. I reckon if Bolt had won the 100 and 200 running on his hands and then provided a solution for world peace you would still pick a swimmer! Good on you, but for my money, Bolt has a certain magic.

Consider this! Kieren Perkins (many years ago) broke the 400m & 800m world records on the way to a 1500m world record. What other sport has such soft world records that this is even remotely possible. There is absolutely NO chance that the 400m & 800m world records would fall on the way to a 1500m world record on the track. Now explain how anyone can possibly think that a swimmer can be positively compared to someone who takes gold in the two most participated events at the Olympics.

Lawrie, you of course will have a swimming bais, but keep in mind that Phelps has only proven that he is the fastest swimmer over one distance - the 200 metres, (freestyle being the fastest event) and so I only rate that one. I couldn't give a tinkers cuss about any of the slower strokes. How about adding in a 100 metre walk, or running backwards to athletics - who would care? And athletics has much more competition than swimming.

The 400 is not a soft world record and Phelps is not racing the 1500, but I believe Phelps is so talented that should he choose to swim the 1500 he would be very competitive. Although a super, super athlete I don't believe Bolt would have the  personality to run the 1500. Personality and ego, I believe,  plays a big part in track sprinting.

Swimming has too many useless events created to increase the amount of medals on offer. If track included similar events such as the backwards 100 m run, the 100 m skip and the 100 m gallop, I have no doubt Bolt would have won those events too. But these events of course don't exist, because they would be pointless, just like most of the swimming. 'Faster' is the goal - therefore only one swimming style is required, just like the single running style. Plus, you need significant resources to be able to swim, and only a long, flat patch of dirt to run. Therefore the depth of talent in track is far greater than in swimming where the number of countries participating is limited. Bolt definitely better.

swimmers will always have the opportunity to win more a handfull of medals at one olympics. Sprinters realistically can never win more than 3 or 4. For example Carl lewis was considered the greatest track and field athlete, yet the only events he could win gold would be 100m, 200m, long jump and 4x100. Theres no way a track and field athlete can even consider winning 8 gold in one olympics. The criteria has to be different if you want to compare swimmers with athletes

Hi Laurie , its a pleasure to talk with you. I think Bolt is the king purely because he has made it look so easy and very fluent. Phelps is a god send, but i think swimming is becoming very tactical with the new suits that the athletes are wearing. Now when we look at the runners, things are the same since Carl Lewis and the other great runners of our time, nothing has really changed. I think the male swimmers should wear the same as each other, ie just the bottoms. And the woman should wear a 1 piece . What do u think , do u reckon it might make things a little more competitive . to determine the man of the Olympics, just look at the versatility of phelps. Something the bolt does not have, if he did, he would run and won the 100 hurdles, the 400m, the long jump. A lot of people say there are more swimming events then track, not really, there is a lot of track events from 100 to the marathon, including hurdles and steeple chase. What you also need to look at, it took 36 years for phelps to emulate something somebody has done before, now there are only two people (male of female) who have one 7 gold in one Olympic. While look at how many people have done the 100m/200m double male or female, a lot more regular then 7 gold! Phelps is easily the king of the Beijing 2008.

phelps won 5 individual gold medals, 3 more then bolt. once again, if bolt could be considered the king, he would tried the 100 hurdles, long jump and maybe 400m. there is 5 individual gold medals chances for Bolt. but guess what, if he was good enough he would have tried, but he didn't.

BuSbOy .. What Phelps did CANNOT be done by the next swimmer to come through. That being the case, the next swimmer after Mark Spitz would have cleaned up .. .he didn't ... and it didn't happen for 34 years in fact. Still, it is impossible to convince anyone with an anti-swimming bias of this fact, and of the mercurial feat Phelps' attained here.

@James: I'm not trying to belittle Bolt's efforts, they really are brilliant. But people keep trying to downplay the efforts of the most successful athlete OF ALL TIME, by trashing the records he has set. After speaking to Bob Bowman, Phelps' coach, yesterday, Phelps is as motivated as ever but they are going to go back and concentrate on backstroke and maybe Phelps is going to look at swimming some different events to maintain his freshness for the sport. He's not frightened to try something new. As Bob said, if it doesn't work out we know he's good at medley and butterfly. I think this is a good way to help keep him involved in the sport for another four years. Only Dawn Fraser, Christina Egerzegi (the Hungarian) and the Russian Alexandr Popov have been able to win at three consecutive Olympic Games. This maybe Phelps' new challenge. Great athletes rise to new challenges. I wonder if the wealth that comes with superstardom will change this young man's attitude. I don't think so. I think his mother - a school teacher - will tell him take out the garbage when he arrives home in Baltimore.

Laurie Lawrence:
Tom, on your point of science helping swimmers not runners, personally I'm not in favour of the new suits. Although I will agree we have gone from the old woollen suits through a whole phase of developments but I do believe these new suits have the ability to 1) float the athlete up 2) aid their core body strength and 3) it helps streamline the more fleshy swimmers. I think anyone who didn't have a suit for the Olympics swimming events wouldn't get a medal. To get back to the Bolt v Phelps argument, that's why Phelps - with only half a suit - gets my vote.

It's a simple equation. Bolt is the fastest human ever (recorded) - unaided, fullstop. He is also the fastest ever over both the 100 and 200 meters. Phelps is NOT even the fastest swimmer and is only fastest swimmer at one distance. So Bolt is easily king.

Phelps trained for 8 Events, set 7 WR's and won 8 Gold. Bolt trained for 2 events, set 2 WR's and won 2 Gold. Bolt could've trained for more if he thought himself good enough, but didn't. Too hard to call. The difference in the disciplines is great. Know Athlete on the track is ever going to win 8 gold medals, it's just not possible. I think it's an even race. If i had to choose i'd say Bolt but only because i am a runner and not a sprinter and i know how spectacular his racing acheivements are. Also Bolt may just edge out Phelps because of the records his broken. Phelps mainly just beat his own times where as Bolt conquered one record (100m) with his hands out at 70m and he conquered another record they said would never be beaten. They are both incredible at what they do and the best in their sport of all time.

Craig, we are punching well about our weight. I believe our team has been extremely succesful and there have been some extraordinarily courageous performances. Anna Meares' silver was gold. If you take into account  many of our young men and women are playing non-Olympic sports in Australia and with a population of 20 million people (compared to China with a billion people and the US with nearly 400 million) we have been exceptional.

Britain has put so much money into their athletes because of  the coming London Olympics. As a result they  have been extremely successful.

Olympic gold medals are not backsides. Everyone doesn't have them.

I think this shows how far Australia is behind compare to rest of the world. Ian Thorpe could have continued to race but didn't have enough balls to represent Australia. We need to show more guts and show the world that we are Australians.

Meanwhile I need to keep pushing the Kids Alive Do the Five message. Whether you are a track fan or a swimmer, our kids' lives are more important than any Olympic gold medals or who is the superstar of the Games.

Nar Bolt has to win, the kid started racing last year (come on, you have to be a freak just to be able to win a gold medal, and do do it within a year!!!)... Phelps has been training all his life, good on him for his effort of couse. Bolt also went back to back 100m,200m which hasnt been done since carl lewis wasnt it?? This kid is a freak and star of the games by far.

easy way to decide - let there be a 4x 200m relay & a 4x 200m individual running relay & see then if Botl catches up in the gold medal count. The fact remains - that a couple of phelps's medals were won for him by others.....Lezak's swimming over the top of Sullivan anybody?
