Current best practices are small
Tuesday July 15, 2008 9:11 cliotech
9:11
RJ Stangherlin:
Hall mentions that teaching 60 DEN STARs collectively will be a challenge, but he wants to salute what we do all year long. Finding it intimidating (can't believe that from Hall), he says we become an exhausting group that he learns from. In his own inimitable style, Hall's presentation is a spin-off/remix of It's In Your Pocket--teaching students with the resources they carry in their pockets.

What are our modern cell phones? - telephone, clock, text messenger, still camera, video camera, video player, GPS device . . .
Tuesday July 15, 2008 9:14 cliotech
9:14
RJ Stangherlin:
I love that we are using current best practices by using our cell phones as an academic resource. Taking photos, texting, polling...actually I do these things in my classroom, connecting the cell phone use to real academics. Risky but the kids love it and to date have had no problems with it. Students seem to respect the ability to use their tools in the classroom.

"If this is a tool for adults, we need to teach kids appropriate use."
Tuesday July 15, 2008 9:17 cliotech
9:17
RJ Stangherlin:
From text to web, cell phones, gCast...how can we possibly ignore the power of cellphone power in the classroom. The debate--to use or not to use cellphones in the classroom--is not where we are going today. That's a school board debate and Hall says that dialogue is coming. But not our task today. Like many other districts, we ban cellphones during school hours. Today's agenda: how to use cellphones in a clearly articulated, purposeful, academic context.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 9:17 RJ Stangherlin

I use cell phones in my Spanish class (and iPods too) - kids actually do the homework now
Tuesday July 15, 2008 9:19 Guest

Steve D:
Typically, I'm used to seeing the Administration making that decision to ban them. Not the teachers banding together to ask the administration to do so. But you may be right.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 9:19 Steve D
9:20
Steve D:
How do you use them in your Spanish class?
Tuesday July 15, 2008 9:20 Steve D
9:20
RJ Stangherlin:
Teaching responsible use is the key and showing students how to move beyond texting. Since parents make certain that students have their cellphones in their pockets, then parents can "track" their kids through the chaperone feature. But a parent can also track their children's use--who's calling them, where they travel, when they cut. Since students won't opt to ditch their phones, tracking students is a good thing. You can also have cell phone messages intercepted and passed to an administrator as well as a parent.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 9:20 RJ Stangherlin
9:22
cliotech:
The real reason parents car about cell phones is the safety issue - schools will lose the battle over the cell phone because parents want their children to have them

Text messages--300 billion in 2007--have a faster response time, beating email use. Advertisers are adopting texting because it captures an immediate audience. It's about turnover, touching your client quickly. Watch Nokia and Apple capture the market.

Good point, RJ. I think it was Ewan McIntosh that said something to the effect of, "If our parents want to supply it, and we have access to it, we'd have to be fools not to leverage it?" Total paraphrase, trying to find the exact quote.

@mrsdurff: what a fabulous idea. I have many LS students without having an aide; I'm going to try this idea. Thank you for sharing. Great idea to let ESL students use their cellphones to translate to native language. Digital natives speaking three kinds of "native" languages. Awesome.

I have my students use their cellphones all the time to podcast and frankly, they love it. It's so easy to get them to do something academic with their phones. Hall demonstrated mini-stories using 6 words using text messaging that are posted online.

Working with polleverywhere.com. I used this site as part on my final exam with my tenth graders for The Secret Life of Bees. Each student made a poll and then we texted our answers. I let them have their "final exam" about 5 days in advance. They can begin to work at home on their wikis, and then on the day of the exam, I give them individual, team, and whole group activities. They loved the Poll Everywhere component. So did I.
