KSR Baseball Blog - UK v Ole Miss Game 2(05/16/2008)
6:12
Darrell KSR:
Hello everybody, and welcome to the KSR Blog and Virtual Tailgate.   Tonight the Kentucky Wildcats (40-14, 15-13) face the Ole Miss Rebels (33-21, 14-14) in a critical Game # 2 of the three game series with SEC tournament bids on the line.   The win secured, for the moment, the # 4 seed for Kentucky, as they remain tied with Florida for the # 4 slot, but would win a tiebreaker (head-to-head) with the Gators.

Darrell KSR:
Sophomore left hander James Paxton gets the nod on the hill for the Cats tonight.     The Rebels will start with star freshman Drew Pomeranz, also a southpaw.

Darrell KSR:
With two more games remaining in the regular season, and a likely SEC tournament bid ahead, with an equally likely NCAA tournament following, the Cats are threatening to eclipse their all-time record mark of 44 wins, set in the 2006 SEC Championship season.

Darrell KSR:
Tonight is senior night for the Batcats, as they honor 9 seniors.   Fellow basketball senior Ramel Bradley is set to throw out the first pitch in just about ten minutes.

Darrell KSR:
Kentucky sluggers Sawyer Carroll and Collin Cowgill have been named semifinalists for the Dick Howser Trophy, given to the top player in college baseball, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association announced on Thursday. Carroll and Cowgill make the semifinal listing of 16 players, joining No. 3 Arizona State as the only team to place multiple players on the list.

The BatCats are honoring 9 seniors tonight.   All of them have been with Cohen since he came to UK.   That is a great comment on the players and the Coaching staff.

Coach Cohen is very upbeat tonight and thinks the BatCats game is coming together at the right time.   The right time being tourney time.

Thinking 5, but would love it to be more than that.   If he can get the curveball working and locate it over the plate, he should go further than 5.

Big two outs to keep that runner on 3rd base with less than two outs.   Those are the kind of plays and positions you need to complete if you are going to win big games.

Carroll batting .416 for the year.     Lined thru the infield and Wiley is tagged out trying to score.   Dangit, that was not good base running.

Carroll and Cowgill make the semifinal listing of 16 players, joining No. 3 Arizona State as the only team to place multiple players on the list. The two players rank among the Southeastern Conference and NCAA leaders in nearly every offensive category, with Carroll leading the SEC in batting average (.416) and RBI (75). Carroll has blasted 15 home runs, 19 doubles, two triples, and stolen 11-of-11 bases, reaching base at a .504 clip, while slugging .752. Carroll’s 75 RBI rank second all-time in UK season history, two shy of the school record, set in 2006 by SEC Player of the Year Ryan Strieby.

Boxscore now shows Paxton having given up only 5 hits.   I think they originally counted the runner's interference as a "hit" -- I know they did in the play by play, and moved it to six.   I don't think that is supposed to be a hit.
