If/When the Mets put David Wright on the trading block, do you see the Dodgers going after him? And what would a potential prospect package look like?
Wednesday November 28, 2012 3:02 T.C.

Ben Nicholson-Smith:
First things first... it sounds like he and the Mets are working hard toward a new deal. But if they don't work something out, then the Dodgers would be a great fit.

For now it sounds as though the Braves are focused on center fielders, including Justin's older brother. But if that doesn't materialize, I can see the Diamondbacks sending him to Atlanta.

I think they're the most likely destination for Greinke at this point. They have the need and the money. Plus, the Angels are reportedly backing off of Greinke at this point (though they need him too in my view).

I expect the Padres are playing the waiting game to an extent. I wonder if they might inquire on pitchers like Brett Anderson, Ubaldo Jimenez and Rick Porcello in trade talks (my speculation).

I think it's likely Fowler stays put. He's clearly drawing trade interest, and would be a fit in Atlanta and other places. But ultimately he's quite a valuable player and the Rockies might prefer to attempt to lock him up long-term.

Wednesday November 28, 2012 3:08 Hendo

Ben Nicholson-Smith:
The Diamondbacks will listen on basically all of their players, Bauer included. But these things can be overblown at times. I think a pitcher with his kind of upside who still has so many years of big league control is going to be tough to part with. Teams will be interested if the Diamondbacks are indeed serious about trading him though. The Rockies, for one, would have to inquire.

Scutaro is a fit at second base, so I would like to see them bring him back. As for center field, I'd be interested in players such as B.J. Upton, Bourn, Ellsbury, Fowler and Josh Hamilton (though whether Hamilton is a center fielder going forward is debatable).

They have to. There's no way they can start the 2013 season without having added to their pitching staff in a meaningful way. That Jeff Francis led the team with 113 innings says a lot about how much uncertainty exists on that staff.

I do think the Giants could be a dark horse for Hamilton. Ultimately there's no easy spot where you say 'that's where Hamilton is going.' So that means there's room for an unexpected suitor to emerge and win the bidding. Greinke, on the other hand, seems like an obvious fit for teams like the Dodgers, Angels and Rangers.

Isn't now the time to extend Headley? If he repeats 2012 in 2013, he'll be priced out of SD; hence, an extension now keeps him in SD and makes him a potential bargain. Thoughts?
Wednesday November 28, 2012 3:21 Marver
3:22
Ben Nicholson-Smith:
I would probably wait another season and see if he can do it again. However, like you say, the Padres wouldn't be able to sign him long-term a year from now if he repeats his 2012 numbers. So it's a risk. I would just be quite cautious about any long-term deals with such a small payroll.

I think if you want to sign a free agent you probably want to work aggressively on that front for the coming month, so that would be the first priority. Ben Nicholson-Smith:
Last we heard the Giants are hesitant to commit for as many years as Pagan seeks.

Do you have a HOF vote? if not...would you vote for any of the steroid-implicated players?

Ben Nicholson-Smith:
I don't. But I would vote for them. Pete Abraham explained his reasoning for voting for guys like Bonds today and I agree with him.

I don't think that'll be enough to get it done in the end.

Hmmm. Maybe on a minor league deal. He definitely has limited leverage now.

He's definitely a fit for the Phillies. They figure to have interest if talks intensify.

how do Giants win it all with limited talent and the Dodgers can't win it all with numerous talent?

Ben Nicholson-Smith:
As for the Giants, they do have a lot of talent.

The Dodgers have talent but they battled injuries and the lineups they fielded early in the season were really not that impressive. I expect better things in 2013.
