Live Blog: Hornets vs. Jazz(04/08/2008)

Well, we've had connection issues (small surprise) and so we've gotten a late start tonight.   Sorry about that folks!

This Arena has more connectivity problems than an e-harmony reject.

Anyhow, the Hornets have gotten off to a rough start tonight and trail 34-31.   What really stands out so far is the team's lack of ball control, as we've seen quite a few turnovers (five through the first quarter alone).

The half didn't end much better, and the Hornets now have themselves a 43-35 deficit at the break.   What's pretty cool, other than the big crowd, is that the Southern University marching band is performing at halftime.   That cushions the sting some.   Just some.

The Jazz aren't dominating in any one phase, but Utah IS shooting a little over 10 percent better from the field.

Mehmet Okur has 15 points, Andrei Kirilenko has 10, and Deron Williams has 7 assists ... and has outscored Chris Paul 4-0.

David West is leading the way for the Hornets with 12, and Peja is chipping in with 7 ... the rest of the team has really yet to get going.

What I mentioned before the game still holds true:   the Hornets need to play at their own pace.   Scoring 35 points in a half is NOT their pace.

Their cold shooting has been a factor, but even if they had equaled Utah to this point in scoring, they'd still only have 43 at the break ... again, NOT their pace.

Oh, and the benches?   Jazz bench is outscoring the Hornets' 12-9.

Tonight's one of those "look on the bright side" kind of nights.   For instance, the Hornets have (thus far) managed to avoid any major injuries, and I have a souvenir soda cup to take home with me.   So it's never all bad.

Still, our connection tonight has been awful and the Hornets have been only slightly better.   Utah has really taken it to our team tonight, leading 68-50 after three quarters of play.   I'd like to say it's been all New Orleans stinking it up, but the truth is this Utah team is good.   What's worse, a loss tonight and again Friday against the Lakers would make a first-round series against Utah all the likelier.   Uggh.

But like I said, there's always a bright side, and the brightest thing anyone can point to tonight has got to be the fact that the Hornets still lead the Western Conference even with this turd sandwich of a game.

Well, given what had transpired earlier, I'd have to say an 11-point loss isn't all that bad.   Then again, I also enjoyed the movie "Universal Soldier" (albeit at the age of 13), so maybe my judgment isn't the best.

Anyhow, major apologies to everyone for this abbreviated blog.   We'll work out a solution for the next time out.

Here's hoping the Hornets put on a better showing next time out!   Take care everyone.

Final score: Jazz 77, Hornets 66
