Cara Rintala Trial: Live updates from Da...
9:50 a.m. Fred Contrada signing in for The Republican on day 4 of the Cara Rintala murder trial. I am outside 18 Barton St., the former home of Cara and Annamarie Rintala. Today is the day scheduled fr the jury to view the crime scene and the bus has just pulled into the driveway. Prosecutors Steve Gagne and Jennifer Suhl got out, followed by the jurors. There are also some Hampshire Superior Court officers present.
I am not allowed to ride with, talk to or hang around the jury on a view, so I am sitting in my car. I cannot go inside the house, which I believe is now owned by someone else. My computer is running on battery, so I will probably sign off in a few minutes.
Monday February 25, 2013 9:55
9:55 a.m. The jurors have their notebooks. They are gathering outside the house in the driveway. The Dupuis house at 20 Barton is next door. It is dark and there are no cars in the driveway. The bus that brought the jurors has pulled out. It's a sunny, seasonable day for late Feb. A Granby police cruiser has made a couple of sweeps up and down the street. The jurors are going inside.
Monday February 25, 2013 9:57
9:57 a.m. I have been covering Hampshire County for The Republican for 25 years and this is the first time I have been sent to Granby on assignment. I had never even been to the town until about five years ago, when I decided to come here just to see what it looks like. Granby is a sparsely populated town with a spare, rural look, especially in the snow. On Pleasant St., which leads to Barton, there is an American Legion post and a fruit stand.
Monday February 25, 2013 10:00
10 a.m. 18 Barton is an all-American looking ranch house, one floor with garage, white. There was a car in the driveway when I arrived and it is still there. I don't know the names of the owners.
Monday February 25, 2013 10:01
10:02 a.m. Not much traffic on Barton Street, which is lined with pines and bare hardwoods. There is a flag with two snowmen (or snowwomen) extending from the former Rintala house. The scene in the basement, where police found Cara cradling Annamarie's body, has doubtless been cleaned up long ago. Prosecutors want to give the jurors a feel for the house, how long it takes to get up and down the stairs, how big or small the rooms are. Although it has been cleaned, it could still be emotional for jurors to stand in the spot where Annamarie lay.
Monday February 25, 2013 10:06
10:05 a.m. I am going to shut down to avoid running out of power. I don't know how long the jury will be inside. After they come out, everyone will return to court to resume the trial. I will sign back on then.
