I think the Sabres are definitely after a defenceman, but it's been Commodore's name that's been out there

The Devils really liked what they saw from Salvador after they picked him up at the trade deadline and they desperately need veteran defenders. $2.9-million is definitely a lot for a guy who's always been a No. 4 or 5 defender

Gaustad signed for four years, $9.2-million yesterday

I think that's relatively fair... keep in mind that the average NHLer now makes $1.9-million and young RFAs like Goose are getting big-time contracts. I think by year three or four, he's definitely worth that

And on Campbell and the Hawks?
Tuesday July 1, 2008 11:18 Eric McErlain

James Mirtle:
that's a tough one to answer.   I'd look at it this way: If your team is close to contending, like Detroit was when they gave Rafalski a similar deal last year, then it's easy to swallow

but that big of a deal for Campbell could be a boat anchor after a year or two. He's closing in on 30, has never been a great defensive player and his speed won't hold up long term

there might be a buyout in his future

if Florida wants to trade Bouwmeester, they should get him on the market quickly. His value would be sky high, perhaps even greater than Campbell or Green

the deal they made with Phoenix suddenly means Florida has way too many NHL defencemen and can afford to trade Bouwmeester, and he has shown a lot of reluctance to sign on long term with the team.

I think Rolston would love to go to Detroit and he'd be a great fit there. I think it depends what kind of a contract he wants -- the Wings are interested if he doesn't go for a home run deal

part of the problem with Rolston is that he's 35 and any long-term deal comes with a lot more risk in that if he retires, it still counts against the cap

I think he does stay in Washington, mainly because there aren't a lot of openings for a starting goaltenders who's going to make more than $5-million a year. LA is rebuilding, Ottawa might go with Gerber and Colorado is sounding more and more like they'll stick with Budaj next year

I think Streit will get a ton of interest because there aren't enough defencemen to go around -- once Campbell goes, who then will teams target as a power play quarterback?

He proved he can play that role, but you're right about him taking a regular shift as a blueliner. Streit also is getting up there in years to be getting a multi-year contract

Yes. Vancouver will be very active, as Gillis needs about eight forwards right now. Toronto I bet gets someone, Ottawa needs a defenceman, and Montreal has all that Sundin money to commit to Mats or elsewhere.

Edmonton's new owner will also have his cash in play

Calgary will be the only inactive Canadian team

I'm really not sure what St. Louis will do -- they seem to have figured out that the rebuild's going to be more slow and steady than they thought, as the second half of last season was a lost cause
