Astros-Mets: Game 3(08/24/2008)
11:12
Unofficial Scorer:
The sequel to Roy Oswalt vs. Johan Santana that played out Friday night had an opposite result than the first run at Minute Maid Park.

The Astros hope the Randy Wolf-Oliver Perez encore goes just like the first one.

Wolf threw five shutout innings and got four more scoreless frames from the then scorching bullpen to beat the Mets 4-0.

Lineups and stats on the starters coming soon as we're just under an hour from first pitch.

Very odd looking lineup for the Astros today with Lance Berkman getting a day off. Ty Wigginton moves to the cleanup spot, meaning that Reggie Abercrombie hits leadoff.

1. Reggie Abercrombie (CF)
2. Darin Erstad (1B)
3. Miguel Tejada (SS)
4. Ty Wigginton (LF)
5. Mark Loretta (2B)
6. Hunter Pence (RF)
7. Jose Castillo (3B)
8. Humberto Quintero (C)
9. Randy Wolf (P)

The word from the Astros clubhouse via Jose de Jesus Ortiz in New York is that Berkman is "banged up." I don't have my medical dictionary handy, so I can't really expand on that.

Reggie leadoff? Really? It bugs me how Cooper has that Phil Garner type approach where everyone plays. Bourn needs to play everday! Rotate him between LF and CF. He just needs ab's. Not that it really matters Bogusevic will be the CF by june of 09.

Unofficial Scorer:
The last time Reggie Abercrombie led off was June 2 of last year with the Marlins. It's actually the first time he's started in a spot higher than seventh for the Astros.

He is 5-for-14 (.357) with two homers against left-handed pitching this year.

Don't be surprised if he comes out at some point once [if] the starter Perez is gone.

Unofficial Scorer:
The Mets have victories in five of the last six Oliver Perez starts, the only exception being the one at Minute Maid Park Aug. 3.

Perez is finding his form as the summer goes along, compiling a 2.19 ERA in his last 10 starts with opponents hitting just .207 against him. He's gone six innings or more in each of those 10.

Like John Maine, he's walked a few batters but kept the hits down as he seems to be the biggest beneficiary of the Mets' changes at the manager's and pitching coach's spot.

A ball and a strike to Reggie Abercrombie, and we're under way.

Unofficial Scorer:
It's rare that Reggie Abercrombie gets caught looking at any pitch ball or strike, even more so a third strike.

The Astros hitters have fairly limited exposure to Perez, but Ty Wigginton, who hits lefties well, is 3-for-8 with two home runs against him.

He will bat in the first should Darin Erstad and Miguel Tejada provide that opportunity.

Wolf comes in off his first loss as an Astro last time out in Milwaukee, and in fact, it was the first time in five Wolf starts that the Astros lost.

If there's a good time to threw four innings and allow six runs, it's when you're going against CC Sabathia because the last couple runs didn't even matter in the blowout.

These Mets hitters will be fairly fresh in his mind; Wolf threw five shutout innings Aug. 3 but wasn't particularly sharp, giving up 10 baserunners.

A ball to Jose Reyes gets Wolf's day started.

A question to the Astros fans as Wolf gets out of a fly-ball-heavy first:

Which hurt more this series, seeing former farmhand Johan Santana get a seven-scoreless win against the Astros, or watching Beltran, whom the Astros couldn't sign, go deep?

Or does neither hurt that much because their departures freed the Astros up to do other things?

Four runs short of that as he can't advance a runner with a pop-up.

This game could be much higher-scoring on both ends.

Randy Wolf gets his fourth strikeout of the game on his 101st pitch and though his spot is not due up until the fifth spot this inning, he could very well be done.

If so, it was about what the Astros expected when they picked him up. Living on the corners, getting lots of outs in the air and occasionally having those balls in the air going a little too far.

Oliver Perez remembered once again how to pitch Hunter Pence, not trying to sneak the fastball over the heart of the plate.

But Pence showed some grit on the foul balls and a good eye as Perez tried to beat him with the slider and walked him.

And I know it's happened at least once before this year: Walk Hunter Pence, and you're coming out.

The Mets bullpen really isn't terrible, the Astros make them look that way. With a .718 OPS against coming into today's game, they're actually better than league average and fifth best in the National League.

Duaner Sanchez makes quick work of Miguel Tejada, and it's time for Valverde, I'd assume.

It's possible that the Red Sox, Yankees, and Mets won't make the playoffs. That means they'll be sitting at home in the same position as the Astros. No team playing in the north east. Almost $500,000 in player expense watching the $40,000,000 Rays team.
