Live Big East Tournament Fan Q&A: Syracuse vs. Connecticut
2:01
Hey, everyone. We'll get going once the game actually ends. Donnie Webb will be joining us and I'm George Owens behind the P-S logo.

Remember, your comments will not immediately publish, and not everything will be published, but we encourage you to join the discussion with questions, comments and observations about the Orange.

We'll be starting things as soon as the game ends.
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:01

Final score: Syracuse 60, Connecticut 55 ... The Orange move on to face the winner of the Georgetown-Cincinnati game, which is next on today's slate.
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:04
2:05
Donnie Webb will be joining us momentarily.

Let me throw this out to everyone ... What are your impressions of today's game? Happy with the Orange play?
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:05
2:08
Just joining everyone. it took me nearly all of the 5-second count to get the inbounds play completed here with the chat, but hey, I had to be patient, right?
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:08
2:08
Apparently, a final score correction. It looks like they did not county Dion's final slam at the buzzer, so the final is 58-55, not 60-55.
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:08
2:08
Dion is not happy. He's over now arguing with officials about making that last dunk count.
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:08

So James Sutherland - where have you been big guy?

Whew! Great way to escape! Not happy with the play of the seniors, thank goodness for Dion and James!
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:10 Noelle

Sutherland scored 10 of the team's last 15 points. Saved Syracuse's white britches today.

At least Doug Gottlieb just admitted that Dion is our "go-to" guy. Do you think these types of games lend to building "character"?

Impressive win.....considering Scoop, Kris, and C.J. accounted for 2 field goals on 2/18 shooting......Dion and james deserve a lot of credit....Go Orange

Dion finishes with 18. CJ and Sutherland 10 apiece.
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:12
2:13
Napier had 15 for UConn, but was 5-of-17 from the field and 3-of-9 from 3-pointland. He took some awful shots, didn't he?
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:13
2:13
Gottlieb got people going at halftime when he stated that he still didn't think Syracuse was a real "elite" team. Jay Williams responded with "Doug, they're 30-1!"
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:13
2:16
Orange made 10 more free throws than UConn. SU was 15-of-23 from the line (.652 percent). Kris Joseph has to be better than 8-of-13. Terrible, really. Might not have been as close if he's more accurate. KJ was 1-of-8 from the field. Even worse.
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:16
2:16
[Comment From GraftonGrafton: ]
Doug Gottlieb won't be happy until Syracuse gets Desmond Mason Jr. on scholarship and plays all their games on the road.
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:16 Grafton
2:18
I think the crowd was officially a sellout, but some people Tweeted that the stands looked pretty thin in the early going. Donnie and I are here in Syracuse, not New York City.
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:18
2:20
Scooper was 1-of-6. So he and KJ from "Scoop and Chris Show" fame are a combined 2-of-14 shooting from the field. Wow. Perhaps they were distracted by all those Derrick Coleman fist pumps from the stands.
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:20
2:22
Here are some stats from the game:

Waiters had 18 points and Southerland and Joseph 10 each for SU. Waiters shot 8-for-11 from the field. Carter-Williams had 4 assists. Melo, Triche and Joseph 6 rebounds each.

[Comment From BrandonBrandon: ]
For all the Gottlieb's out there that don't believe we are an elite TEAM: how many other teams could have such sub-par games from their leaders (Scoop/Kris) and still defeat a team as talented as UConn?? Answer: none.
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:22 Brandon
2:22
I went across the street to Darwin's for a salad just before lunch and it was dead (despite a great review today in The Post-Standard). Lots and lots of people in town excused themselves to local taverns to watch the noon contest, I suspect. There's a massive traffic jam in front of Tully's on Erie. Where'd you watch?

When Gottlieb was asked at halftime if Syracuse could win the national title, he said, "Of course they can. The best team doesn't always win."

That went over real well with Syracuse fans on Twitter.
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:24

Napier led UConn with 15 points, Drummond had 14 and Lamb 10. Drummond added 10 boards.

Huge minutes today from Rakeem ... can't wait to see what happens with him with a full summer under his belt.
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:25 John
2:26
Drive and dish by Michael Carter-Williams to Rakeem Christmas for the dunk in the first half was pretty sweet. What did y'all think of bringing Christmas off the bench and starting Fair? Of course, what was up with CJ? Had 2 points and no rebounds in 15 minutes. Was it the lost headband?
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:26
2:27
[Comment From BrandonBrandon: ]
Rak is an excellent rebounder already. Also seemed to play better coming off the bench. Gotta be the early front-runner for Most-Improved in BE next season!
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:27 Brandon
2:28
Don't have the total minutes Christmas played in the boxscore here, but he played quite a bit. He has 2 points but 5 rebounds.

Christmas didn't start today, but it turned out that wasn't a knock on him, it's just that he played the minutes as Melo's backup instead of Keita. Keita didn't get in the game today.

Third game against uconn and a scary rivalry game. I think they'll play much better tomorrow with that one under their belt.
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:28 Dan
2:28
Rakeem got bulldozed out of the way by Drummond on that last free throw and putback, didn't he? Someone swallowed their whistles. The replay was even more comical. Of course, Fab should've been on that side to begin with.

Thursday March 8, 2012 2:31 Dan

MCW led team with four assists. Had he played the entire game, at that rate, he would've had 20 assists. Scooper and Dion had 1 assist each. Triche had none.

[Comment From DanDan: ]
The best stretch they played the whole game was when the 2nd 5 were in in the first half.
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:33 Dan
2:33
Last year, UConn played five games in five days at the Big East tournament; and went on and won the national title; not sure how much pressing would've inflicted fatigue. Of course, Kimba Walker might have had something to do with it, too.
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:33
2:34
[Comment From BrandonBrandon: ]
Pressing those UConn guards is bad idea. As far as CJ and James' minutes, it is a nice luxury to be able to play whomever is playing well that day instead of having to stick with a guy even when he's having an off-day.
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:34 Brandon
2:35
Dan: Fair struggled today, and Southerland had a hot hand. That's the thing with the depth this team has. If someone is struggling, Boeheim doesn't have to stick with them. He can play the hot hand. In the second half, that was Southerland. If Fair gets off to a strong start next game, JB will probably stick with him.
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:35
2:36
OK, quick question for everyone. Who would you rather see SU face in the semis? Georgetown or Cincy?
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:36
2:36
Brandon, don't you think the "nice luxury" you mentioned is exactly what makes Syracuse an elite team? Who else has so many pieces to mix and match and a coach that zeroes in on the hot hands game after game?
Thursday March 8, 2012 2:36
2:37
[Comment From stevesteve: ]
30-1 and let's tweak the lineup?? They won today and some guys played great, but Fair looks much more comfy coming off the bench this year. I do like Rak backing up Fab better than Keita though.

Donnie, nobody has that many pieces. A guy or two are off for any other top team, and that's that. Us? You're off you sit and someone else just as good as you can have a hand at it. Triche summed it up nice the other day: "what are the odds 3 of us are off on the same day?"

I was thinking about that pass Rakeem caught from MCW that resulted in a dunk. No way Keita ever, ever, ever in a million years, catches the pass. He drops it or flubs it out of bounds.

Orange seniors played poorly, which is shocking given their experience; team shot poorly from the field (38 percent); got outrebounded (shocking, I know); CJ had a tough game; but Orange won because of its own defense and strong offensive games by Dion Waiters and James Sutherland.
