FanHouse MLB Chat(07/09/2008)

Mullet:
Welcome everyone to the MLB chat here at FanHouse.   Hope it's a beautiful day where you are.   And if you're in Milwaukee or Chicago, I'm sure it's a gorgeous day whatever the weather is.   Andrew Johnson is here with us too.   How are you Andrew?
Wednesday July 9, 2008 12:59 Mullet
1:00
Andrew Johnson:

I can't complain, ready to talk baseball.

Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:00 Andrew Johnson
1:01
Mullet:
Great.   Well, we've gotta talk about CC Sabathia and Rich Harden.   I'll start with the obvious, who helped themselves more?
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:01 Mullet
1:01
Andrew Johnson:
That's easy ... the Brewers, who a. had a greater need for Sabathia, but b. got the far superior pitcher.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:01 Andrew Johnson
1:02
Mullet:
I'm inclined to agree with you.   And there's always the lingering doubt about Harden's health too.   Sabathia is durable and will get the run support he was lacking in Cleveland.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:02 Mullet
1:03
Andrew Johnson:
I keep hearing that Rich Harden is great  if he is healthy, well CC almost always IS healthy and he's pretty fantastic
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:03 Andrew Johnson
1:03
Matt Watson:
I'm going to jump in here -- I think the Brewers got the healthier pitcher, but did they get a better one? Strictly talking about talent, they're close to even.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:03 Matt Watson
1:03
Matt Watson:

Who do you guys think took the bigger risk?

Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:03 Matt Watson
1:04
Andrew Johnson:
Think about this, CC has gotten through the sixth inning in his last 15 starts. There was Jim Hendry yesterday championing the fact that Rich Harden had made nine straight starts, like that was something to be proud of.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:04 Andrew Johnson
1:04
Mullet:

I think the Brewers took the bigger risk just based on the level of prospects they gave up, and since Sabathia  could be  gone after the season, while I think the Cubs have Harden for one more year.

Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:04 Mullet
1:05
Matt Watson:

I agree completely.

Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:05 Matt Watson
1:06
Mullet:
I gotta ask too, how does the Harden trade fly with A's fans?   We know that Billy Beane is going to do what Billy Beane does, but how do you sell trading your ace pitcher when you're in contention for the playoffs?
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:06 Mullet
1:06
Andrew Johnson:
I don't think either team really took huge risks actually. Let's face it Matt LaPorta, as great a prospect  as he is, did not have a place to play in Milwaukee, and really belongs in the American League anyway. Plus, the Brewers are likely to have five picks in the top 50 next year if Sheets and Sabathia walk away as expected.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:06 Andrew Johnson
1:07
Mullet:

And the Cubs didn't seem to give up as much as Beane had been asking for in the past.

Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:07 Mullet
1:07
Andrew Johnson:
It's gotta be tough to take as an A's fan, on the other hand, Sean Gallagher is ready right now. Who is more likely to make the rest of his starts this season, Rich Harden or Gallagher?
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:07 Andrew Johnson
1:08
Andrew Johnson:
Plus he got some nice parts, a much-needed outfield bat in Matt Murton.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:08 Andrew Johnson
1:08
Mullet:

We've been waiting for Murton to go somewhere for regular at-bats forever.

Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:08 Mullet
1:08
[Comment From Vegas WatchVegas Watch: ]
That LaPorta didn't have an immediate position in Milwaukee doesn't make him riskless. They are still going to catch a lot of flack if he hits 140 homers from 09-12.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:08 Vegas Watch
1:09
[Comment From Tom BradyTom Brady: ]
The Chicago Cubs should finish first there is no way the Brewers will catch them. I think it is the Cubs years this year the wait is finally over. They get the monkey off of their back.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:09 Tom Brady
1:09
Mullet:
You know what I wonder:   How do the Cardinals respond?
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:09 Mullet
1:09
Andrew Johnson:

Really? No way the Brewers catch them? They aren't exactly running away with the division

Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:09 Andrew Johnson
1:09
Andrew Johnson:
Can the Cardinals respond? Should they respond?
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:09 Andrew Johnson
1:10
Matt Watson:
I'm not sure they do. They're kind of living on borrowed time as it is.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:10 Matt Watson
1:10
Mullet:
And who left is out there to get pitching wise?   They're getting enough from the spare parts they have (Kyle Lohse has 10 wins).   I just wonder if they're thinking they have to do something now.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:10 Mullet
1:11
Andrew Johnson:
Agreed, and they don't have a great farm system. They could trade Bryan Anderson or Colby Rasmus for something, but what would they be getting -- A.J. Burnett, Erik Bedard? I'm passing if I'm St. Louis.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:11 Andrew Johnson
1:11
Matt Watson:
I mean, Ludwick having a career year, Lohse pitching like an ace, Ankiel leading the team in homers ... this is a team exceeding all expectations right now. Even if they made a big move, there's no guarantee everyone else won't come crashing back to earth.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:11 Matt Watson
1:13
Mullet:

Bedard might be the next to get dealt.   And I saw where he was talking to the media in Philadelphia recently.   Should the Phillies, or any other needy team in the other two divisions take a chance on Bedard?

Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:13 Mullet
1:13
Andrew Johnson:
I would like to see the Cardinals stay in it, just because I'm a big fan of three-team races. You don't see many of those in the wild-card era, but this year could be epic with the AL and NL Easts and Central all having the potential to be three-team races.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:13 Andrew Johnson
1:14
Andrew Johnson:
I wouldn't take a chance on Bedard unless I had a phenomenal pitching coach I trusted -- only two names really spring to mind Don Cooper and Dave Duncan
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:14 Andrew Johnson
1:16
Mullet:

The one thing I'll say about the Phils is that Rich Dubee has  his bullpen at the top in ERA in the N.L.   If only he could get the starters to pitch like that.

Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:16 Mullet
1:16
Andrew Johnson:
Bedard really took off in Baltimore under Leo Mazzone.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:16 Andrew Johnson
1:17
Mullet:
That's a great point, especially with all the pitchers who thrived under Mazzone and then fell off somewhere else.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:17 Mullet
1:17
[Comment From JImJIm: ]
Don't count the Cards out, they have one of the best managers in all of baseball
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:17 JIm
1:17
Andrew Johnson:
Here's another thing I've been thinking about ... is the rest of trading season going to be a big disappointment/letdown or do you guys think the Sabathia and Harden deals are a precursor to an epic trade deadline.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:17 Andrew Johnson
1:18
Andrew Johnson:
We haven't really had a great deadline since, in my opinion, 2004, when the Red Sox traded Nomar Garciaparra.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:18 Andrew Johnson
1:19
Mullet:
I think it depends on who has what left in the farm system.   I'd like to see the Mets get and outfielder, for example.   But do they have anyone left in the farm system enticing enough to get, say, Adam Dunn?
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:19 Mullet
1:19
[Comment From robrob: ]
any chance the mets will trade for an outfielder at the deadline? i dont think they can rely on alou and church being healthy anymore
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:19 rob
1:20
Andrew Johnson:
I just don't think the Mets have the chips for someone like Dunn, Bay, certainly not Matt Holliday. I still think Xavier Nady is the right fit there.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:20 Andrew Johnson
1:21
Mullet:
I agree with you.   Nady would be great, especially having played there and having success in '06.   I keep hearing that the Pirates would ask for the moon for X-man.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:21 Mullet
1:21
[Comment From mattmatt: ]
how about a raul ibanez or randy winn
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:21 matt
1:22
Andrew Johnson:
Nady would also be able to spell Delgado against left-handers, which is why I see him as the right fit for the Mets.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:22 Andrew Johnson
1:22
[Comment From TimTim: ]
I think the only thing that can come close to Harden/Sabathia is Holliday, but with the NL West being so weak he might not get traded
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:22 Tim
1:23
Mullet:
Especially tough lefties, which Delgado has had a problem with.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:23 Mullet
1:23
[Comment From robborobbo: ]
what do you think the atlanta braves should do
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:23 robbo
1:23
Andrew Johnson:
Or if Teixeira is moved again, but that's sort of what I'm getting at. There are some big names out there, but there always are. After the last couple years I'm suspicious about deals getting done.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:23 Andrew Johnson
1:24
Andrew Johnson:
I think the Braves should trade Teixeira.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:24 Andrew Johnson
1:24
Mullet:
If they keep falling like a stone, yes.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:24 Mullet
1:25
Mullet:
But is there a contender out there that really needs a regular first baseman?   There may not be a fit for anyone.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:25 Mullet
1:25
[Comment From TimTim: ]
The Braves just don't have the pitching to compete right now, they need to sell Teixeira and get value out of him with MLB-ready players, not just the 2 draft picks next year
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:25 Tim
1:26
Andrew Johnson:
I just don't see them hanging around. Teix could help replenish the top of their always excellent farm system. Plus the draft picks they're going to get probably won't be good. I'm banking on him going to the Angels, Yankees, Mets or Red Sox -- who all pick late in the first round.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:26 Andrew Johnson
1:26
Andrew Johnson:
The Angels could always use a big bat. They really need one to get to the World Series, in my opinion.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:26 Andrew Johnson
1:26
Mullet:
If they wind up trading guys like Saltalamacchia and Andrus and only wind up getting the compensatory picks for him, it would be a disappointment.   L.A. of A is a great fit.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:26 Mullet
1:27
Mullet:
And with the Angels not scoring runs lately, I'm sure Lackey and Santana would love to have Teixeira for some breathing room.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:27 Mullet
1:27
Andrew Johnson:
Yeah, and they have the prospects to offer up. I'd imagine any deal would start with Nick Adenhart
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:27 Andrew Johnson
1:27
[Comment From TimTim: ]
The Angels never seem to make that big move at the deadline, they're always right there at the end of the year but haven't made that over the hump deal, Teixeira would be that kind of a deal. Maybe Kotchman/Wood and a Pitcher
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:27 Tim
1:28
Mullet:

True, the Angels always seem to acquire their guys during the winter, and not in July.

Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:28 Mullet
1:28
Andrew Johnson:
Plus, you know Teixeira knows the AL West pitchers and he's a second half player. On top of all that, we know how desperate the Angels are for offense.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:28 Andrew Johnson
1:29
Mullet:
I wonder what Arizona's going to do.   That division is begging to be taken by the scruff of its neck, and the Snakes could use a bat.   Is there somebody out there for them?
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:29 Mullet
1:30
Andrew Johnson:
Well, where would they put a bat. I agree they need one, but who are they going to block? I suppose the injured Eric Byrnes.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:30 Andrew Johnson
1:31
Andrew Johnson:
I'm still a big believer in Arizona's talent -- particularly Upton and Young.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:31 Andrew Johnson
1:31
[Comment From ShamalotShamalot: ]
Will the Cubs still go after a lefty for their bullpen?
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:31 Shamalot
1:32
Mullet:

And Drew and Conor Jackson too.    All those guys  could still have a hot streak in 'em.

Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:32 Mullet
1:32
[Comment From TimTim: ]
They are too heavy on potential right now and need a big veteran bat. But they already gave up a huge amount of prospects to get Haren so they might be a little limited in the quality bat they can get in return
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:32 Tim
1:32
Andrew Johnson:
They need someone in that bullpen, whether it comes from within or without. Carlos Marmol is already over 50 innings on the season and Wood and Howry are both on pace for over 80 innings
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:32 Andrew Johnson
1:33
Andrew Johnson:
You do not want a tired bullpen heading into the postseason.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:33 Andrew Johnson
1:33
Mullet:
Kerry Wood's definitely a guy, given his history, that you want to keep relatively fresh.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:33 Mullet
1:34
Mullet:
Damaso Marte, perhaps?
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:34 Mullet
1:34
Andrew Johnson:
Marte would be a great add for ANY team. He's really been excellent in Pittsburgh for two years now.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:34 Andrew Johnson
1:35
Andrew Johnson:
There isn't a bullpen in Major League Baseball that couldn't use him
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:35 Andrew Johnson
1:35
[Comment From TimTim: ]
I'm a huge Cubs fans, and the problem right now is that the guys before Marmol/Wood aren't throwing enough strikes which makes Lou bring in his big guns, leading to too many innings thrown. Marmol definitely needs a break and Fuentes/Marte would be amazing in that bullpen
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:35 Tim
1:35
Mullet:
And I'm guessing the Bucs would want a good haul for him, since he's their closer.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:35 Mullet
1:36
Mullet:
Fuentes is a name we haven't brought up yet, but he's been rumored to go everywhere.   The Cubs could kick his tires.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:36 Mullet
1:36
Andrew Johnson:
I thought the way the Red Sox managed Hideki Okajima over the second half of 2007 should be the model Chicago should follow. The Cubs are going to be a playoff team, they need Marmol healthy and ready to chew up innings in October.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:36 Andrew Johnson
1:36
Andrew Johnson:
If that means sacrificing a few games down the stretch .... fine.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:36 Andrew Johnson
1:37
Andrew Johnson:
Fuentes would be a nice add too.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:37 Andrew Johnson
1:37
Mullet:
I agree, lose some battles to win the war.   But with Sabathia in Milwaukee, the Cubs may not feel they have that luxury anymore.   But even if the Brewers catch them, the wild card should come out of the Central.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:37 Mullet
1:37
[Comment From TimTim: ]
Chad Gaudin should help a lot, thats a really quiet piece of that trade that is a huge improvement. He'll give a much bigger foundation for that bullpen and should give Marmol/Howry so much needed rest
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:37 Tim
1:38
Andrew Johnson:

Solid point. Gaudin is the forgotten man in this trade, but he was really excellent for Oakland last year until he tired in the second half.

Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:39 Vic

Mullet:
Do they have any minor leaguers left to make a deal after trading them all for Dontrelle and Miggy?
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:40 Mullet
1:40
Andrew Johnson:
They're getting back into it, but I wouldn't expect any moves. They have NOTHING to offer. Even less than the Mets do.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:40 Andrew Johnson
1:40
Andrew Johnson:
Rick Porcello and uh ... *crickets chirping*
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:40 Andrew Johnson
1:41
Mullet:

Knowing the Mets farm system, that's saying a lot.

Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:41 Mullet
1:41
Andrew Johnson:
And I don't think they want to trade Porcello.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:41 Andrew Johnson
1:41
Mullet:
Dave Dombrowski would be certifiable if he did.   There's nobody out there left who's worth Porcello.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:41 Mullet
1:42
[Comment From TimTim: ]
With the amount of talent Detroit has, they really shouldn't have to be thinking about a trade right now.

Just me, or is Tampa due for an injury or two that completely haults their season
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:43 Dan
1:44
Mullet:

The Rays have enough talent that if someone goes down (depending on who of course), they can stay in the hunt.   I wouldn't want to lose Crawford or Kazmir for an extended period of time.   But you could say that about most teams.

Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:44 Mullet
1:44
Andrew Johnson:
Well, they've HAD injuries. Carl Crawford has been battling a bum leg all year. Scott Kazmir missed all of April.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:44 Andrew Johnson
1:44
[Comment From TimTim: ]
They already had Kazmir on the DL for a while, they got through that just fine. I don't see one player, besides maybe Crawford/Upton, hurting them that bad if they get hurt
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:44 Tim
1:45
Andrew Johnson:

They are young. Younger teams are less susceptible to injuries, generally speaking. Look, the Rays aren't going away. I think all the skepticism about their inexperience is pretty laughable.

Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:45 Andrew Johnson
1:45
Mullet:
The key for them is that Matt Garza has really started to come into his own.   I loved that trade for Tampa from the beginning.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:45 Mullet

Andrew Johnson:
He hasn't signed yet. San Francisco has until mid-August to sign him. I've heard Posey will be a very, very late sign. He's asking for an enormous signing bonus.

The ironic thing about the Mets is that starting pitching is not a concern for them right now as it has been.   Oliver Perez and Mike Pelfrey have been lights out for them lately (maybe the change in pitching coaches had something to do with that.)
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:52 Mullet

I don't see that happening. It's always a possibility, but I believe the Giants will spring for him.

I think it is just awesome to see Cleveland trade away a solid talent to get some prospects that will will not have around long enough to win a Championship. For example our entire team from the last time we went to the world series.
Wednesday July 9, 2008 1:54 Matt
1:55
Andrew Johnson:
I wouldn't be so gloom and doom. Cleveland still has plenty of championship parts. Obviously losing Sabathia hurts, but they still have a great pitching staff, and now they have a much-needed corner bat. I think the Indians can contend next year.

I think the Indians are probably about done making moves. They could deal Betancourt -- maybe -- but most of their team is young and cost-controlled and I think they expect to be right back in it in 2009.

The problem with Barry isn't so much his fielding, but that he constantly had to be pulled for a pinch runner to keep him fresh in the seventh.   You can't afford to do that on a contender.    A contending team  needs to have Barry's at-bats late in games.
