Thanks for joining me. Let's talk some UFC.

Whom should Forrest Griffin fight next?
Rampage Jackson
 ( 50% )
Chuck Liddell
 ( 27% )
Wanderlei Silva
 ( 0% )
Lyoto Machida
 ( 14% )
Rashad Evans
 ( 5% )
Anderson Silva
 ( 5% )

How could Rampage not get a rematch when you and several other people thought he deserved to win?
Monday July 7, 2008 12:03 Joyce
12:04
Michael David Smith:
I did think he deserved to win, but I thought it was close. If the UFC decides that someone else deserves a shot, I would have no problem with that at all.
Monday July 7, 2008 12:04 Michael David Smith
12:05
Michael David Smith:
One thing to keep in mind: If they do a Rampage-Forrest rematch, that would mean the entire year of 2008 goes by without a single person other than Rampage or Forest fighting for the UFC light heavyweight title.
Monday July 7, 2008 12:05 Michael David Smith
12:06
Michael David Smith:
And then what if Rampage wins a controversial decision in the rematch? Don't they have to give Forest another chance? And then are we going to go a year and a half or more with only Rampage and Forrest fighting for the light heavyweight belt?
Monday July 7, 2008 12:06 Michael David Smith
12:06
Michael David Smith:
There are just so many good light heavyweights in UFC right now, I think UFC wants to get more of them in the title picture.

[Comment From WalkerWalker: ]
Have you read the hype from Dana White about the next "Anderson Silva" on the next season of TUF? Any guesses who it is?
Monday July 7, 2008 12:06 Walker
12:07
Michael David Smith:
I have read that and I have no guess who it is. I'm excited for the coming season of TUF, but I take any talk of "next Anderson Silva" with a grain of salt.

[Comment From ArtieArtie: ]
You seem to be assuming that Liddell is going to beat Evans. I don't think he is.
Monday July 7, 2008 12:08 Artie
12:08
Michael David Smith:
I take it you're saying that because I listed Liddell as the most likely next opponent for Forrest Griffin.
Monday July 7, 2008 12:08 Michael David Smith
12:09
Michael David Smith:
It's not that I'm assuming Liddell is going to win, but I do think he's the favorite in that fight, and I think if he wins he's the logical choice to take on Forrest in what could be UFC's biggest fight ever.
Monday July 7, 2008 12:09 Michael David Smith

[Comment From Doc JayDoc Jay: ]
Shouldn't Wanderlei-Rampage happen next?
Monday July 7, 2008 12:10 Doc Jay
12:11
Michael David Smith:
That would be a great fight, and it's the fight I said would probably be next for Rampage.
Monday July 7, 2008 12:11 Michael David Smith
12:12
Michael David Smith:
But there is one issue: Wanderlei is ready to fight now. His last fight was in May, and it only lasted 36 seconds. Rampage, on the other hand, is going to need a while to recuperate from the Forrest fight. UFC might want Wanderlei to fight again before Rampage is ready.

I think it's going to be a while. Late December at the earliest.
Monday July 7, 2008 12:14 Michael David Smith
12:15
Michael David Smith:
Georges St-Pierre fights Jon Fitch next month, and on the undercard of that fight, Roger Huerta fights Kenny Florian.
Monday July 7, 2008 12:15 Michael David Smith
12:15
Michael David Smith:
The Huerta-Florian winner is expected to fight B.J. next
Monday July 7, 2008 12:15 Michael David Smith
12:16
Michael David Smith:
So assuming B.J. has to fight one of those two guys this fall or winter, he wouldn't be able to move up to welterweight to fight St-Pierre any time soon.
Monday July 7, 2008 12:16 Michael David Smith

When/if it happens. BJ vs. GSP II will be great, but there are going to be a lot of great fights before that finally happens.

It's actually in September. From what I've heard his hamstring is going to be 100 percent.
Monday July 7, 2008 12:17 Michael David Smith

I do worry a bit about Liddell's health. The guy turns 39 in December. He can't keep fighting forever.

[Comment From DougDoug: ]
Can Forrest give the UFC the kind of marketing power that Rampage could've / did? It seems that most of their champions (GSP, Penn) can't draw the casual fan in.
Monday July 7, 2008 12:18 Doug
12:19
Michael David Smith:
Interesting question. Griffin is very popular, dating to his Ultimate Fighter days, but there is a concern that the people he's going to draw in are already there, and that he's not the kind of larger-than-life personality who will hype up the fights. I do think he has good drawing power, though.
Monday July 7, 2008 12:19 Michael David Smith

[Comment From ralph whiteralph white: ]
Do you thnk Liddell still has the hunger, the warrior mentality to compete and win back his title?
Monday July 7, 2008 12:23 ralph white
12:24
Michael David Smith:
I still think he has the hunger, I'm just not totally sure that he has the physical tools. He was great against Wanderlei, but he looked old and slow against Rampage and Keith Jardine.

How much longer is Faber gonna stay in WEC before moving up to 155?
Monday July 7, 2008 12:24 William
12:25
Michael David Smith:
I think he'll probably stay at 145 a while. He doesn't struggle to make weight and Zuffa seems to like having him as the face of WEC, rather than just one of many UFC lightweights. Having said that, he's a great fighter and I do worry that he's not going to get enough good fights at 145.

No one would buy Lyoto Machida vs. Forrest Griffin on payperview
Monday July 7, 2008 12:28 David
12:30
Michael David Smith:
I'm not sure I agree with that. I know a lot of fans don't like Machida's style, but the fact is, the guy is undefeated and has fought some pretty good opponents. He's also a classy guy who conducts himself the right way. I think UFC can sell Machida to the fans, but I agree with you that it is a tougher sell than some of the other guys.
Monday July 7, 2008 12:30 Michael David Smith
12:30
[Comment From DougDoug: ]
Nobody is going to buy Machida vs anyone (except maybe Rampage) because of his style. That's unfortunate for UFC, because it's looking like he should hold the belt before too long.

Hadn't heard that before. WEC could have a superfight with Faber vs. Miguel Torres, but I think that would be more likely at 145 than 135.

Michael David Smith:
I don't know if "intimidated" is the right word, but I agree that Rampage didn't fight his best fight. I think the leg kicks were really getting to him.

Silva beat him badly both times. With drug testing probably won't win

True, Liddell lost two in a row and then fought a very good fight against Wanderlei.

Rampage v Sokodjou would be interesting. I'm surprised he's only been on the untelevised undercard so far.

Forrest won that fight by pushing the tempo the whole fight. Once he hurt the leg it was over

no doubt, hurting Rampage's knee was the key to the fight.

well the chuck wand fight had to happen just from a $$ standpoint. it's a fight that everyone wanted to see and if they didn't set it up at the time and chuck somehow lost a 3rd in a row that fight wouldn't have been nearly as big as it was

Evans is a great fighter but he gasses in every fight. By the 3rd round he is on fumes.

The Griffin vs. Anderson Silva possibility is interesting -- Anderson has said he might go up to 205 permanently, and there's no reason to do that unless you're going for the title.
