Hello everyone, thanks fo joining me. Again, the plan is to try to get to more questions than last time, but try to get your questions in early because we're going to shut it down around 11:30 or so.

Sam, why would Sather sign both Voros & Rissmiller, especially with the glut of 3rd/4th line players, and the very limited cap space?
Friday July 18, 2008 11:01 Jeff
11:02
Sam Weinman:
I think the team wasn't thrilled with the offensive production of the fourth line last year and I think they counted on those secondary units being more of a factor.

Sam – can you help settle the endless Prucha debate? Some think he’s been misused, others think he’s had plenty of chances cement his spot in the lineup. Your thoughts and what you’ve heard in the locker room plus from management would be interesting.

I would have to think most guys think of it as an inconvenience. But there are players who understand the need to sell the sport.

[Comment From BrettBrett: ]
Everyone has Zherdev playing with Gomez but I think he is a better fit to play with Drury because he likes to carry the puck through the neutral zone and attack like Gomez. Who do you think he should play with?
Friday July 18, 2008 11:04 Brett
11:04
Sam Weinman:
Prucha was underutilized given what the team had in front of him -- i.e. Shanny, others -- but I do think they are counting on him for more this year. That's not to say he can't be dealt, but if he's here, he'll play

Sam Weinman:
It's true it is better to have a guy with Drury who prefers to carry the puck since Drury is actually more of a finisher than a playmaker.
But I still think Gomez makes sense first.

I'd look to guys like Callahan and Dubinsky, not to mention Voros or maybe even Sjostrom to fill Avery's role. It'll have to be by committee

[Comment From NickNick: ]
Hey Sam, the Rangers have a glut of centers right now. It seems that the Rangers like Anisimov and Fritsche, since they traded for him. Will the Rangers trade Betts or another center to free up some room down the center before the season begins?
Friday July 18, 2008 11:07 Nick
11:08
Sam Weinman:
Fritsche can play wing, and he was a throw-in in the Zherdev deal so I don't think the Rangers are counting on replacing Betts just yet. But again, it should be a competitve camp. It will be tough for Anisimov. He needs to get bigger.

Does the fact that Nigel Dawes signed at such a low price show any signs that he wants to be a Ranger long term?
Friday July 18, 2008 11:08 Joseph

Probably on Dawes. But that's the system a little bit, too. But I was surprised his number was that low.

What are your thoughts on bringing Shanahan in as a coach for the first half of the season and then bring him in as a player, similar to what Neidermeyer did?
Friday July 18, 2008 11:09 Sarah
11:10
Sam Weinman:
Wow. I don't see it happening. I think if the Rangers wanted Shanahan at all back as a player, they would have done it by now. Does their view change if it's clear they need him? Maybe, but I don't see it now.

In the last few years, we've seen players like Dawes, Staal, Girardi, Callahan, Dubinsky, etc come through the ranks and be big players for the Rangers, who do you expect to do the same this year?

You can see the cap numbers. If there's another top forward coming, that means someone -- if not a couple of players -- are on their way out. But I doubt it.

11:14
Sam Weinman:
Given everything that's already happened, I'm skeptical of another big forward coming in. If the Rangers can bring in Sundin, it would have to take a lot of maneuvering to fit him in under the cap.

Sam, i asked this last time, but never got through....With the Hossa/Montoya Trade returning Gratton Lenevu and Sjostrom, we have only kept Sjostrom. Gratton has signed with NAS and Lenevu is with ANA now, did we end up losing this trade, and what is our depth now at goalie prospect, how do you feel about this
Friday July 18, 2008 11:14 Bill
11:15
Sam Weinman:
I think you're right, Bill. Right now it doesn;t look like a good deal, and it will look even worse if Montoya amounts to anything. That said, I like Sjostrom's game.

Younger players meaning guys in Hartford? Some. I think one or maybe two forwards this year, and more after next. But the team seems to now have a glut of guys in their mid 20s who are locked in for at least a couple of years.

Sam, Do you see Betts staying as 4th line center or is he going to have to win the job back in camp? Everyone has Fritsche at 4th line center in their dream lineups but with no Betts the PK would be much worse.

I guess my first attempt didn't go through: but losing Shanahan (presumably), Jagr, Avery and Straka, that's almost 100 goals gone from a team that had trouble scoring last year. Are Naslund and Zherdev the answer? Will the Rangers be able to score enough??

It's a very good question but I think the Rangers are banking on the fact that they won games with defense last year even with those guys. It's going to have to be scoring by committee.

Sjostrom is 6' 220lbs and the 11th overall draft choice in 2001...he is nearing the break out age of 27with in the next 3 years. I think Sjostrom was been misused and he should be flanking Gomez with the speed he has going through the nuetral zone...we saw it a few times at the end of the season for a few shifts but it was too late to change things up that drastically, i want Sjo with Gomer

Sam, how do you feel about the way Sather has handled this off-season? The argument can be made that he bungled the negotiation process with all of our big names who've walked away, and it's necessarily the first time that has happened.

Sam, 2 questions here. DO you see a center moving to a wing spot to accomdate the likes of Fritsche and Betts (I like Dubinsky to wing with Gomez and Zhredev). And Prucha seemed to really fall out of favor with the coaches last season, and no confidence when he was in, whre do you see him fitting in....if at all? Keep up the good work.
Friday July 18, 2008 11:49 AndyNYR
11:50
Sam Weinman:
Like I said, if anyone's going to move to wing, it would be Fritsche especially given how good Betts was on face-offs. And I would count on Petr Prucha getting more of a chance to play a prominent role this year.
