Why don't the Saints consider trading down to get Q. Groves and making him a LB
Wednesday April 23, 2008 11:59 Mike
12:00
timespicayune:
JIMMY SMITH: Mike, if the Saints’ stay at No. 10, or even if they trade down, they’ll have to get somebody who can make an immediate impact and not a project player. While Groves could be a good candidate for a switch, it’s unlikely, because of the team’s suspect defense, they can afford to take a flier such as that.

With all of the trade talk going on about the Saints and the draft, What do you see them doing come Saturday?
Wednesday April 23, 2008 12:00 Troy, Opelousas
12:01
timespicayune:

MIKE TRIPLETT: Hey Troy, I’m a little skeptical since Saints GM Mickey Loomis came out and told us that the Saints have been talking about trading up. Usually he plays it very close to the vest. … But I do think it makes sense for the Saints to move up to get the best defensive player available.

My guess is that they can’t get all the way up to No. 2 to get Glenn Dorsey, but they move up three or four spots to get USC defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis. … If they stay at No. 10, I expect them to grab either CB Ledois McKelvin or LB Keith Rivers.

By the way, if you want Ellis, you might want to root for QB Matt Ryan and RB Darren McFadden to go as early as possible. If a bunch of defensive players start flying off the board early, Ellis could go as high as No. 5 to the Chiefs.

Do you think a trade for Shockey will go down? A proven TE (young at that) would be great, but the last thing we need is another butterfingers target for Brees.
Wednesday April 23, 2008 12:01 Trinity
12:02
timespicayune:
JIMMY SMITH: The Seattle Seahawks, Trinity, are now said to be in the Jeremy Shockey hunt. But make no mistake: Shockey is coveted by the Saints. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, recently told a New York TV station in a video interview that his client was unhappy in New York, something that has been rumored but unsubstantiated by Rosenhaus. Shockey apparently wants out of New York and he’d like nothing better than to be reunited with Sean Payton, under whom Shockey had one of his better seasons when both were in New York. The Saints, therefore, will continue their pursuit of Shockey. Don’t be surprised if the trade goes down sometime on Saturday.

Lance Moore didn't really cut it as a punt/kick returner for the Saints, is there a Devin Hester type player available in this draft?
Wednesday April 23, 2008 12:02 Andrew A.
12:04
timespicayune:

MIKE TRIPLETT: Hey Andrew. You should definitely be rooting for the Saints to wind up with Leodis McKelvin. He might be the best cover corner available in this year’s draft. And as a bonus, he might be the best return man. He returned six punts and a kickoff for touchdowns while at Troy. … Later in the draft, running back Chris Johnson can absolutely fly, but the Saints don’t really need a speed tailback since they have Reggie Bush.

By the way, Bush could become that return man you’re looking for this year. He was a little dinged up last year, and the Saints needed him to be their every-down tailback, so they didn’t use him to return many kicks. But I think this year more than ever, the Saints want to try and maximize Bush’s value to the fullest.

If the Saints trade up or down who do you think they will target?
Wednesday April 23, 2008 12:05 JC
12:05
timespicayune:
JIMMY SMITH: If the Saints trade up - and Mickey Loomis said on Tuesday they won't trade down - the primary target, JC, would be Glenn Dorsey. There's too much scuttlebutt regarding such a possible move for the talk to be unfounded. Some people believe that the Saints might have to move all the way up to No. 2 in order to get a shot at Dorsey. With the shortened first round, it's possible the deal could happen before the start of the draft on Saturday, but more likely no trade would be consummated until Saturday.

12:06
[Comment From Dio GrazioDio Grazio: ]
Can you explain the draft position point system? What is the "going rate" for a team that wants to move up from the 10th pick to the 2nd? Do you think that price is worth it for Dorsey?
Wednesday April 23, 2008 12:06 Dio Grazio
12:07
timespicayune:

MIKE TRIPLETT: The “going rate” for Dorsey is extremely high. According to the value chart that teams have been using for years, the Saints would pretty much have to trade their entire draft to move up from No. 10 to No. 2 – or else send this year’s first-round pick, this year’s second and next year’s first. … Think about what the New York Giants paid to move up to No. 1 for Eli Manning a few years back, not to mention what the Saints paid for Ricky Williams.

But that is all starting to change now that teams are becoming more and more reluctant to pay the huge contracts to high draft picks. So the price could be reduced. Maybe a 1st, 2nd and 3rd this year? … The Saints could offer next year’s first-round pick, but the Rams are in win-now mode, so I don’t think they’d be too interested.

Lotta talk of the first round. Who are the Saints targeting for the 2nd/3rd Rounds?
Wednesday April 23, 2008 12:08 Sir Saint
12:09
timespicayune:
JIMMY SMITH: It's hard to project all the way to the third round, Sir Saint because too much can happen on the first day in the first and second rounds. But I wouldn't be surprised, because of the uncertainty of Deuce McAllister's rehab, that the Saints go for a running back in round two, possibly Tulane's Matt Forte. Forte is a McAllister-type runner who's well rounded, has good character, and a strong work ethic. Sounds a lot like McAllister, doesn't it? The Saints are likely wondering just how effect McAllister could be c oming off a pair of knee surgeries, so going after a running back makes sense.

do yall like the idea of swapping with Philly for Lito?
Wednesday April 23, 2008 12:09 JT
12:10
timespicayune:

MIKE TRIPLETT: Personally, JT, I love the idea. I think Sheppard will be better over the next two years than any cornerback available in the draft, and I think the Saints should be thinking short-term. As long as Drew Brees is in his prime, the Saints are legitimate Super Bowl contenders.

That being said, I’ve found no indication that the Saints have been talking to the Eagles about such a move – other than the fact that the Saints are always one of the most aggressive teams in the draft when it comes to trades.

Wednesday April 23, 2008 12:10 timespicayune
12:13
timespicayune:
JIMMY SMITH: Bryant, knowing the double-speak and comment misdirection that is so prevalent this time of year, Loomis' comments that the Saints won't be moving down could be taken with a grain of salt. Remember Loomis said last year the last position the Saints would draft was a running back and they actually traded up to get Antonio Pittman. However, the Saints do have some solid depth now on the roster, even defensively with the free-agent acquisitions, so moving down to obtain more picks probably isn't likely. The staff seems to like what Robert Meachem is doing in the offseason, but we won't be able to make an evaluation on that until we see Meachem again on the field in OTA sessions and minicamp.

I am hearing alot of buzz about the Saints liking Mendenhall from different sources. Will the Saints once again turn their eyes to offense again in the draft?
Wednesday April 23, 2008 12:14 Justin
12:15
timespicayune:

MIKE TRIPLETT: Hey Justin, I just don’t see that. Maybe if someone like Darren McFadden fell to the 10th pick, you could argue that he’s the best available player and he’s too good to pass up. But I don’t think Mendenhall qualifies as the “best available player” at No. 10, and he definitely doesn’t fill the biggest need.

I wouldn’t rule anything out, though – and I wouldn’t be surprised if they drafted a running back at some point in the draft.

If the Saints are to just stay at #10, who or what position do you think they will target?
Wednesday April 23, 2008 12:15 Casey
12:16
timespicayune:
JIMMY SMITH: If the Saints figure the price to move up is too high, Casey, there are a couple of positions that should draw some interest. They've been obsessed the last two years with linebacker, so if Keith Rivers is still around, he's a solid possibility. If Rivers is gone, though, there's a grouping of solid cornerbacks available so that would probably be the way to go. The position still could use some help, even young help.

ESPN.com has a live draft being conducted currently and they have the Saints trading up to #5 for our 10th and next year's 1st rounder for Sedrick Ellis. Is he worth it?
Wednesday April 23, 2008 12:17 Kenny
12:19
timespicayune:

MIKE TRIPLETT: Hey Kenny. That scenario wouldn’t surprise me too much. I think Ellis is a guy the Saints are targeting, and I think it might cost that much to get there (maybe a little less, a first, a second and a fifth or sixth?) … Is it worth it? Depends on how much you like Ellis. Personally, I know I’m, in the minority on him, but I’m not completely sold after watching him at the Senior Bowl and the combine.

The Saints know a lot more about him than I do, though, especially defensive line coach Ed Orgeron, who recruited him to USC. So if he’s the guy they want, I say go ahead and be aggressive.

[Comment From KrisKris: ]
Why should the saints take USC's Keith Rivers wiht the 10 pick instead of a CB. The saints have Vima achoring the middle and fujita playing on the outside and either Scott Shanle or Dan Morgan playing the other side with all of those LB's why wouldn't we draft a CB number 10 overall
Wednesday April 23, 2008 12:19 Kris
12:20
timespicayune:
JIMMY SMITH: You've obviously been staying up with the off-season moves, Kris. But you have to consider that both Vilma dn Morgan come to New Orleans with a recent history of injuries. The Saints are taking a chance  with the  acquistion of VIlma, who's coming off unusual  surgery to repair a damaged area of bone in his knee joint, something he's been playing with since childhood. If the  repair doesn't take, the Saints are only out a fourth-round pick this year. Morgan  had concussion problems last season and has some age on  his body. So even though it seems that the Saints have upgraded that position, there's still some doubt. That's why Rivers still seems to be an attractive option at No. 10.

The more I read and watch on Rodgers-Cromarties, the more I like him. What are the chances the Saints take him at #10?

MIKE TRIPLETT: I think Rodgers-Cromartie is definitely on the Saints’ radar screen. They love those high-upside, fast, athletic guys, and I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he’s the pick. … But I think they’ll lean toward more of a polished prospect like Ellis, linebacker Keith Rivers or McKelvin. With the 10th pick, you don’t really want to roll the dice, and Rodgers-Cromartie is still very raw. Even at a small school, he got beat a lot.

By the way, for any Rodgers-Cromartie fans out there, here’s a reason to get even more excited. This is what workout guru Tom Shaw told me about him earlier this year, when I called Shaw to ask about Glenn Dorsey:

“I never make blanket statements, but this guy is going to be as good or better than Deion Sanders. This kid can fly. As soon as he learns the game … I’ve never seen anyone break on the ball like

How is Robert Meechem looking this off season and will he contribute anything this year?
Wednesday April 23, 2008 12:25 Jarvis
12:25
timespicayune:
JIMMY SMITH: According to GM Mickey Loomis, Jarvis, Meachem is having a sensational offseason. He has been working with fellow receiver David Patten, whom Loomis says has been a great role model for Meachem. It was obviously all last year that Meachem was favoring his injured knee and even more obvious that it would be a redshirt season for him. Meachem, by the way, was the only No. 1 draft choice last season never to have stepped on the field.

Do you see the Saints trading one of their marquee players during this draft?
Wednesday April 23, 2008 12:26 CHUCK
12:27
timespicayune:

MIKE TRIPLETT: Not really, Chuck. I know some people have been speculating that Will Smith might get dealt since he’s only got one year left on his deal. But the team has a good relationship with him,  they NEED him on this defense,  and he hasn’t been demanding a trade like Kansas City’s Jared Allen was. … I don’t think they want to give up Roman Harper in that Shockey deal, either.

[Comment From ScottScott: ]
The Saints surprised everyone last year by going offense first, but I don't know why anyone was surprised that a Sean Payton coached team put a premium on using high picks to get offensive playmakers, and lower ones like 2nd rounder Usama Young to buttress the D. If the Saints surprise all the experts again and go for O at the 10 pick, who do you see going? Maybe a Desean Jackson, or is this too high for him?

Will the Saints surprise and go offense with the 1st rd pick?
Wednesday April 23, 2008 12:28 Al
12:29
timespicayune:
JIMMY SMITH: The offensive pick last year in the 27th spot, Scott, was probably  more   of a "best available" than an offense versus defense. The Saints obviously felt that Meachem was better than any defensive player on the board.  There are just too many holes defensively to use the 10th overall pick on an offensive player. The need for defensive help is too great. And there has been too much chatter about the Saints moving up, so they're not targeting an offensive player with that pick but a defender.

Wednesday April 23, 2008 12:29 Barry
12:30
timespicayune:

MIKE TRIPLETT: I doubt it, Barry. Maybe if Deuce McAllister had a setback in his recovery, that would make some sense. But Alexander has really been tailing off the last couple years, and there’s no guarantee he’s gonna be any better than Deuce this year. … I think if they’re worried about their running back depth, they’ll address it in the draft, with someone who can replace Deuce in the future.

How do you think Hollis Thomas react to Ed Orgeron aggressive and stern coaching? Hollis is a bit of a jokester and makes no bones he doesnt like the heat, could this been a potential clash of personalities? This a position we are razor thin. Whats your take?
Wednesday April 23, 2008 12:31 Justin in Shreveport
12:33
timespicayune:
JIMMY SMITH: Gets hot up there in Shreveport, too, doesn't it Justin? Do you know any 350-pound football players who enjoy training in the heat? Well, even though Ed Orgeron might be an in-your-face kind of coach, and the man he's replacing, Marion Hobby, was somewhat more softspoken, I don't think there'll be any kind of personality clash between Thomas and Orgeron. Thomas might come off as a happy-go-lucky guy when the cameras are rolling, but he's a professional who takes his job seriously. He couldn't have played this long if it didn't matter. Thomas will do whatever it takes to prepare himself for the season, and you're right, the position is pretty thin, which is why the Saints might be looking to trade up to get Dorsey.

JIMMY SMITH: Pierre Thomas proved last year against the Bears, Nathan, that he can be counted on to   be a solid NFL running back. He's a determined runner, a good receiver, can play special teams and appears to be durable. He'll be in the running back mix this season, no question. And there's still some uncertainty about Deuce's health. Sean Payton likes to have a lot of running backs in camp. Thomas will get a long look.

timespicayune:
JIMMY SMITH: You might have ruled out running backs, DC, but don't think that the Saints have. I feel certain you'll see a running back picked somewhere. Many teams like to target offensive line depth, and the Saints will likely do the same. Sean Payton last year stressed the importance of competition at every position as the reason they went after Antonio Pittman. If the Saints are unable to obtain Shockey in a trade with the Giants, it's possible that a tight end could be a late-round choice. But the Saints have managed to find tight ends off the waiver wire, so that's always a possibility. You can never have too many bodies on the offensive line, though.

MIKE TRIPLETT: I think so … but then again, I thought they’d be pretty good last year. I think the Saints have a lot of the most important pieces in place – starting with quarterback Drew Brees. If they can be just a little better in the running game and a little better on defense, they should win the NFC South. … I think Jonathan Vilma will be a huge addition on defense. And I also think they’ll get a lot more out of Reggie Bush this year.

What I've heard of Vernon Gholston was he was physical freak, but somehow his seeming ability to dominate does not show up on film. Reminds me of Renalo Turnbull.... Do you think it would be a mistake to trade up for him ore even take him at #10?
Wednesday April 23, 2008 12:42 Paul
12:43
timespicayune:
JIMMY SMITH: You'd have to hope, Paul, that Vernon Gholston would be better than Renaldo Turnbull. Turnbull, as was the man he replaced on that side, Pat Swilling, was often the benefactor of the attention teams were paying to Rickey Jackson on the other side of the defense, which allowed Turnbull and Swilling to disrupt the quarterback. The Saints seem pretty strong at the defensive end position with Will Smith and the recently acquired Bobby McCray, along with Charles Grant. The need along the defensive line is in the interior where Brian Young and Hollis Thomas are getting up in age. The focus should be at defensive tackle.

timespicayune:

MIKE TRIPLETT: Hey Chris. I think the Saints have a pretty good group, in general. The competition between Henderson and Robert Meachem for the No. 3 receiver job should produce a worthy winner. Then after that, Lance Moore and Terrance Copper both bring value on special teams – the most important attribute for No. 4 and 5 receivers. … I don’t think this position is a big weakness for the Saints. And remember, Reggie Bush practically counts as a receiver. He’s almost like a Steve Smith type at times.

That first question cracks me up, by the way. It’s amazing how many of these questions we get in these chats about trading our underachievers for better players. … I’m guessing the Cardinals would pass on that one. But, yes, Boldin would be a significant upgrade for this receiving corps.

Consensus opinion is that the Saints are in need of a DT, LB, or CB, but I am concerned about the safety position where Harper seems to be the only legitimate starter. Any talk of the Saints addressing that position?

MIKE TRIPLETT: We get a few questions about the safeties every week. … I agree that they don’t have any Pro Bowlers back there, and if one of the top safeties is available in Round 2, the Saints should be tempted. They’re looking for the best defensive playmakers available at any and all positions.

But I don’t think Harper, Bullocks and Kaesviharn is a horrible group. I think all of them will be helped if the Saints can get more athletic in the front seven and start putting more consistent pressure on quarterbacks.

JIMMY SMITH: It depends on how old you are, Chris H, or if you've been injured recently. That seemed to have been a trend in the Saints' free-agent offseason moves. Presumably you know where the Saints' training facility is located, 5800 Airline Drive. But I'm not sure if they're currently accepting employment applications. The Saints did have a pretty good linebacker who was elevationally challenged, though. Remember Sam Mills? He always listed his height at 5-9 3/4. He felt the extra 3/4 distinguished him. Fact is, it was his play on the field, and his heart, that distinguished him the most.

Guys... in wake of the monster deal tha Jared Allen is getting form the Vikings, does this make our efforts to sign or trade Will Smith the more realistic option

MIKE TRIPLETT: Hey Don, I fully expect the Saints to get something worked out with Will Smith at some point. He wants to stay, they want him to stay, and they can afford him. … If anything, I think this Allen deal will help speed the process along because it helps set the market. Smith should get a deal that falls somewhere in between Allen’s deal (five years. $75 million) and Charles Grant’s deal last year (seven years, up to a maximum of $63 million). (forgive me if I'm wrong on those numbers. I'm going off the top of my head).

JIMMY SMITH: In speaking with Sean Payton at the NFL owners meeting, saints fan, it seemed as though Payton still was encouraged by David's potential. He wasn't ready to say David's acquistition was a mistake, as did with Brian Simmons, who was cut after the team got Jonathan Vilma. If they draft a cornerback, and Randall Gay looks as though he'll be an adequate replacement, David could be a goner. Don't know that he'd bring much in the way of a trade based on his production, or lack thereof, last year.

A guy on the Hornets game blog from last night said, "CP3 is everything we thought Reggie would be!" Do you possibly see Reggie having even remotely as successful a 3rd year campaign as CP is having for the Hornets.

MIKE TRIPLETT: Hey Corey, if you’re a regular reader of these chats, you know my answer already. I expect big things from Reggie Bush. He was a big disappointment last year, but I think he’s more motivated after dealing with failure for the first time. … I just can’t get over how good he looked over the second half of his rookie season. He’s a rare athlete. The Saints just need to figure out the best way to use him.
