Look, if only Laycock and Gumbleton could get up. they have two fresh players coming in with half a season - Welsh and Reimers. Welsh was very unlucky to be hurt by an irishman, and Riemers is just back on planet earth. He was the youngest kid drafted with my last pick in my last year at drafting.

Collingwood are probably in teh four because they have played Melbourne twice so far. And Fremantle too. There is a gimme 12 points at the moment. They always end up with the best draw, travel very rarely, and then will trip over themselves at finals time. Probably in the second game again. Sorry Mick. Don't get grumpy

No, play him. Players struglle to play well every week. He just needs to be reguided every two or three weeks. He is a different cat, but he's a good player and they are hard to find. Anyone who can kick nearly 100 goals, its frustrating, but make one false move and miss the finals and everyone bags the selection committee. HE knows he should have chased. So just perform Fev, or you do get dropped

Look, at a pinch I couldn't do any worse. I don't apologise for averaging 14 wins a year for the last 27 years.
You would always talk to the Tigers if they asked you. I heard Kevin pumped me up this morning on radio. If its at all possible,. Kevin and I might run the Kevin and Kevin show on radio next year. He knows where I come from. Its good to have a rest though for a year , and rejuvenate yourself. I would say Essendon and myself got tired of each other after 27 years. That is feasible.

If the Tigers don't do something they will be looking
They are doing the right thing right now playing every kid on teh list. Rawlings has done the right thing by the board and club. Unfortunately you can't forget the scoreboard, but don't go into depression mode over it. I did it a few times at Essendon and people spat the dummy, but you have to find a couple of good kids.
Just don't play them every week because you might do them more harm. I used to play them two weeks in and a week out like Bart Cummings did,.

Joel Selwood will captain Geelong. It's only a matter of time. The Bombers were very unlucky not to get him in the year he was drafted. We missed out on the priority pick because they changed the rule. It would have been Gumbleton at 2 and Selwood at four. But we missed him

He would be a very good full forward for the Bulldogs if they though they were only one or two players away from a premiership. If the Swans wanted to off load him you would consider taking him for sure. It would be similar to Stu Dew. Sometimes a player might do the right thing in a game like a final. Dew didn't want to be playing and was tired of it all. Barry is showing that. He miight think he is a boxer before he is boxing.

On Grant Thomas, I think absolutely he deserves credit. Its been a good combination. At Essendon I had Davis and Stephens prepare that premiership for me. The coaches before give you the opportuntity to add on. Thomas got players there and groomed them and then Lyon came on, after a dispute between pres and coach, and has added the icing on the cake a bit. IF Lloyd and Lucas can keep up this half of the year, if might put some enjoyment into the next part of the season. Lucas has played in the twos a bit, but that's OK. Everyone feels the pressure. The Cats will win it. Nothing surer. Only injury will stop them. It would be unforgivable for Geelong to lose two in a row. They would have to live with themselves for the rest of their lives. He has done pretty well. so he's on the way. And if he finishes off the second half of the season, the board would be pretty happy./ The players have confidence. If they have an average second half of the season, and don't forget they have three away trips with a last hard month, then they will have to think, They will run at 11-12 wins. A lot depends on this Friday night. No one knows Knights as a coach but we know grumpy Mick is good under the pump. Inwardly everyone as a Bomber has enjoyed beating Carlton twice this year.
If they beat the Pies twice who cares about the finals. You have 16 points of those racoons!!!

i think Tom Harley hit the nail on the head during the week when he said that this constant criticism of the cats, be it their supposed fade outs or close wins is really an injustice to the other AFL teams that they have beaten (in every game this year). All you ever hear from Geelong wins this season is what the other team can take out of it and how good the opposition team was. Are Geelong as good as they were last year, better or otherwise? And, will they beat the saints on Sunday? surely Stkildas midfield cannot be compared to the Cats?

If you were appointed the new coach of Richmond for 2010, how many players would you look to move? Personally I think the place needs a big broom.
Wednesday July 1, 2009 12:38 Aaron
12:41
I think what happens, and I have only been to a club once as coach, is that we got the broom out gradually. Players are better dedicated these days than ever before, but you give everyone the chance to see what they have done, and how they are thinking. Interviews with players are very important. That;s what its about. How you connect groups of people together. That also applies to the board room as well as coteries. Building a club is absolutely crucial for the mighty Tigers, in the history of this club. A lot of them have been working hard on that. Membership hasn't shut but they are up to 37,000 plus
It's a great result for a club that has been to the finals twice in a quarter of a century. Amazing. Only Collingwood would be able to do that.
Not many clubs have the power of the people and capacity to really shake. The Tigers do. Ther have been many great slogans, but it's time is probably one of the best I had seen by the Labor party in 1975.

Sheeds, not sure if you are discussing SC or not in this forum today. But if you are, for those of us that are struggling without G Ablett in our side is it still worth getting him in, even though it's past the half way point of the year?
Wednesday July 1, 2009 12:41 John
12:44
It's a massive decision. With  Supercoach, always take the best if you can afford them. And also if we are looking for improvements to the game, have the capacity to change your lines in the last six matches. If you run out of trades, can you play your backline on your forward line. IT happens in games when you are running out of personnel. And also, I have spoken to many people who would like to get into the game. We really need to develop a running sheet for over 50s about how to play this game. The mums and dads feel like they have missed the boat. But they haven't. We need to look at ourselves in here adn have a look at the simplest way to incorporate people who love crosswords and sudoko to get in.

On Ablett, get him for sure. Even if it means you have to trade a mid-ranked player for a kid. He got 400 points on the weekend as captain, and especially in the finals when he wins lots of contested ball, you need him. So do what you can to make sure he's in your side

Yes, I think that we are trying to get it right. We don't know if other sports have it right too. There is a debate. We try to help our playes. REmembers onee thing, we have the most contracted players of any sport in the nation, and are going to 18 teams. So we are out there promoting and if there are half a dozen players who have done the wrong thing, cut them some slack. We get players who have problems, and we try to help them with their lives. Who is to say a one strike policy is right. Or not.
You will find the problem when we have one strike and a person takes their life because they have had that strike. Cut them some slack

People ask if Ben Cousins should go on. HE shoudl keep playing until he's not good enough. People wanted Hird to retire at 27. He went on to 34. HE got teh ball 36 times at 34 years of age at Subiaco, the biggest footy ground in the world. Ben cousins is 30. If he wants to be great from here on in its up to him. It's about his attitude in life. The AFL gave him a chance and Richmond took that chance up. He owes it to himself and his family to do it right.

Have other players jump[ed into the pack. Many players vote well every year, so can you find the four that might replace them. Always look at form. And past history. No, we had to replace the retiring future of Lloyd and Lucas, which is nearly here now. So you have to do that first. We backed up with players such as Leroy Jetta and Kyle Reimers, another year younger, and Bachar Houli.  But I take your point. you pick on what you feel your plans should be and we knew Lucas, Lloyd and Fletcher would be missed. We sorted out Fletcher by picking Ryder. And then we threw in Gumbleton and Laycock. We went tall ahead of small. That's the way you look at it.

I think Lovett and Winderlich have added pace in teh midfield. Watson has been very good at shovelling it out to them. He remuinds me of Bull Richardson, Richo's father. He never had the great run the super stars of his day did.
Jobe has got the best out of himself. We told him he wasbn't playing an dpushed him all the way along the line and I am very pleased he is having the year he is having. Its a good lesson for other under 18s not to turn up from college footy unfit and not ready to go. Watts could be in that ballpark too.

I have my footy camps. 270 kids at the Kevin Sheedy footy camps. We have it every year at school holidays, and our first father son there this year. James Hird and Thomas Hird. James went to the camps, and now Thomas is. It's a tough time economically and we have the most kids ever. Kids love footy. And these camps are a good barometer for footy and its lifeblood. Its good to get out on a cold windy day, and learn they play in the middle of the winter.

SO GOODBYE TO ALL. IT'S BEEN GREAT. CATCH YOU IN A COUPLE OF WEKS
