The 22 game win streak is an SU record to start the season. What is the longest SU winning streak ever?

Mike Waters:
John,

I was saving this little nugget for Sunday's game against Clemson, but since you asked:

Syracuse won 23 straight games between the 1916-17 and 1917-18 seasons. The last 7 in '17 and the first 16 the following year.

If Syracuse and Arizona had both lost on Saturday, would they have stayed the same 1 - 2 in the rankings? Or could Syracuse have moved up to #1 with the loss? Duke jumped up six spots with the loss...
Thursday February 6, 2014 12:00 Cosmo Kramer
12:02
Mike Waters:
Cosmo,

If both SU and Zona had lost on Saturday, I think Arizona would've stayed at No. 1. Even though SU's loss would've been to a ranked Duke team, it was at home. Zona's loss was on a last-second shot on the road.

Duke jumped six spots because it had won at Pitt earlier in the week and a road loss in OT at Syracuse was viewed as a good thing by the voters. Also a few teams ahead of Duke lost.

Is it safe to say the light has come on for Rakeem Christmas?
Thursday February 6, 2014 12:02 Telly
12:04
Mike Waters:
Telly,

Rakeem has had some very good games of late, so yes, I'd say the light is on. His 7 points, 10 rebounds and 6 blocks against Duke were critical.

But SU fans shouldn't expect Rakeem to do that every night. The last hurdle for any player is consistency.

I would expect more good games than bad from Rak at this point.

Mike, I always like when the band plays. I always thought they should have played Lido by Boz Scaggs everytime Devendorf hit a 3. Imagine how fun that would have been?

Al,

I always thought the band should've played something from Devo. The students could have worn those funny red pyramid-shaped hats and yelled "We are Devo.''

Mike Waters:
Ricky,

I have not talked to any of the recruits who were at the Duke game, but I've ready nothing but good things on a few recruiting sites.

A good sign for Syracuse: Moustapha Diagne's mother was here from Senegal as was his former Senegal coach.

[Comment From TellyTelly: ]
If Syracuse had lost the Duke game in OT would Boeheim have taken heat for not setting up the defense at the end of regulation? Seemed like the players were unsure as to what to do in that last 4.8 seconds. Even Boeheim seemed unsure during and after the game.
Thursday February 6, 2014 12:07 Telly
12:09
Mike Waters:
Telly,

I don't think so. Duke was out of timeouts. You don't want to call a timeout to set your defense and give Duke a chance to set up a play.

Boeheim wanted to give a foul. CJ Fair attempted to do that, but he did't make a good enough show of it and the ref didn't give him the call.

Give Duke credit. It got the ball to the right guy and he just went from there.

How can SU consider tearing down the Dome after the Duke game? the atmosphere was electric and really came through on TV. Any potential recruit in attendance or even watching would move SU to the top of their list. The Dome is a recruiting weapon and an icon! Build new academic structures at Skytop and leave the Dome alone.
Thursday February 6, 2014 12:09 Steve
12:11
Mike Waters:
Steve,

Those were essential the sentiments expressed by Boeheim after the game. The Dome is a great recruiting tool for the basketball program.

The problem is the Dome is really showing its age in key areas like luxury boxes, the tiny concourses, the bathrooms and the media facilities. Not to mention the team locker rooms!

If you don't build a new stadium/arena, then the university must pump a bunch of money into renovating the Dome.

Mike, as NC alumnus, do you think Tarheel fans feel a bit miffed at the Hype behind the Duke-SU rivalry. After all, for many years the Duke-NC games were the marquis matchups in the ACC.

Steve,

Boeheim chose not to share that conversation with us.

But I think it went something like: "I told you we should've played more zone in the Olympics.'' I am totally kidding.

Otto,

Boeheim is now 2-1 against Coach K. All of those games were when Coach K was at Duke.

Boeheim has never coached against Army, so I didn't even have to look up whether he coached against Krzyzewski at Army.

Was Boehim pissed at the PA announcer at the end of the ND game? McDonough said he had a spirited conversation with the PA announcer but no idea what it was about.
Thursday February 6, 2014 12:16 Steve
12:18
Mike Waters:
Steve,

I have not spoke to either Boeheim or the PA announcer, but given the timing of their in-game conversation, I believe it had to do with the announcement of Trevor Cooney's career-high and also his tying of the school record for threes.

Generally, you don't make those announcements while the game is being played.

Of course, it's generally a good policy not to embarrass people on national TV.

What's your opinion on Wichita St. being undefeated, but still being ranked fourth, behind teams with 1 and 2 losses? Is this far or just people not respecting mid-majors?
Thursday February 6, 2014 12:18 Eric B.
12:20
Mike Waters:
Eric,

I give Wichita State a ton of credit for still being undefeated. But the voters have to take into consideration who Wichita State has played and compare that to the schedules that other teams have played.

I really pity the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee when it comes to seeding the Shockers.

Thursday February 6, 2014 12:20 Paul Bart

Mike Waters:
Paul Bart,

You know it's really hard to say without actually being there.

Were the fans drunk? Were they told to stay behind the pink line? Did they step over the line once or twice or was it more often than that? Were they taking away any enjoyment of the game from other fans?

Was the security guard a little too aggressive? Did he give them ample warning? Did he single them out because they were Duke fans?

If I had the answers to these questions, I could give you a good answer.

I think CJ Fair will get drafted. Not sure where yet, but I believe he will.

Obviously, Jerami Grant and Tyler Ennis would be drafted if they entered the draft, but I'm not convinced that either will at this point.

That decision's a long way off.

I don't really know where SU fans stay in NYC. Heck, half of them live there.

Mike Waters:
The players get to the Dome for home games on their own. There is no team bus.

I've seen players hop out of cars driven by friends or family. They sometimes carpool.

It's fairly common. Other schools are like that too for home games.

Thursday February 6, 2014 12:31 Eric B.
12:33
Mike Waters:
Eric,

Syracuse wanted to foul. I thought Fair tried to foul, but he was guilty of being too cautious. And the ref didn't give it to him. Perhaps the refs didn't realize the situation either. We can't ask them, though, because they are adults who are getting paid and the athletes are 18- and 19-year-old kids who aren't getting paid.

Seems fair, right?

Thursday February 6, 2014 12:33 Jay Bilas
12:36
Mike Waters:
Jay,

OK, I walked right into this one.

Sorry Jay, but I'm not an advocate for paying players. But hear me out.

I don't like paying players. I think it would bankrupt a lot of university athletic departments and we'd see the end of Olympic sports. Look at Temple, which just cut a slew of sports.

However, I do think athletes should be compensated for their likenesses and that would include jersey sales. Let a player have an autograph signing.

Also, and this is never mentioned. There is something called the Pell Grant, which is need-based and available to all. It offers more than enough money for the winter coat/pizza argument.

Some development must take place in practice.

Also, it doesn't help when every game is close. Had SU maintained a double-digit lead against Notre Dame, I'm sure Roberson wouled have played more.

Gbinije has to get more comfortable with the ball. He looks timid. He's turning it over too much.

I don't think it's possible to have an arena that seats 49,000 and is still basketball-friendly. I think by definition it's too big and fans are too far from the court.

Dr. Plums,

I have no idea. I think it's a silly crusade. The Dome's court is already named for Boeheim.

Mark Titus in his Power Ranking column on Grantland.com ranked his opinion of the best Syracuse teams and had the 2012 team #1, followed by 1987, and 2003. Curious as to which team you think is the best.
Thursday February 6, 2014 12:47 Andy
12:49
Mike Waters:
Andy,

I don't know Mark Titus, but I'd have to disagree.

I'd go with 2003 because that team did what every team hopes to accomplish.

After that, I'd go with 1989 and 2010. The 2010 team was far better than the '87 and '12 teams.

The '89 team had Coleman, Owens, Sherman, Thompson and Matt Roe with Dave Johnson and Richard Manning (two future NBA draft picks coming off the bench). Only an incredibly loaded Illinois team knocked them off in the Elite 8.

Mike-any idea what Coach is looking for in Roberson coming off the bench? He doesn't look too sure of himself out there and it is hard to get an identity from his limited time (shooter, post player, etc.)

Defense. It's gotta be defense. Because Roberson rebounds really well and he's shown that he can hit the jumper from the elbow.

Plus, it's hard to take out Fair and/or Grant if the game is close.

[Comment From Harrison ChevyHarrison Chevy: ]
Mike, you said last chat that you didn't think Grant would leave school after this year because you didn't think he was "ready". What does that have to do with anything? You leave school if you're guaranteed to be a high pick in the draft. Being NBA ready has absolutely nothing to do with it. If both Grant and Ennis are projected to be lottery picks, they're gone. Period.
Thursday February 6, 2014 12:51 Harrison Chevy
12:54
Mike Waters:
Harrison,

There are two forms of ready when it comes to the NBA.

1. are you ready to be drafted? Obviously, Grant would be drafted this year, so yes, he is ready to be drafted.

2. Are you ready to play in the NBA? I don't think Grant is ready just yet. He doesn't shoot the 3 and his jumper is just OK out to 15 feet. Have you seen the way teams back off him?

I think his NBA career will get off to a much better start and he'll be a much more attractive free agent after three years if he stays another year, improves his game and goes higher in the '15 draft.

Thursday February 6, 2014 12:57 Saltine Warrior

Mike Waters:
Saltine Warrior,

I think it depends on your viewpoint.

Players come to college much more ready to play. There are more good players and more good teams.

But players leave early. They don't stick around. So you don't see great teams. for instance would Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins return to North Carolina after winning an NCAA title today like they did after winning in 1982? No way.

Your opinion on the non-call on Christmas at the end of the game? Looked like all ball up top. Great call IMO.
Thursday February 6, 2014 1:00 Henny Y.
1:02
Mike Waters:
Henny,

There's this thing called the principle of verticality. It applies even if the defensive player jumps as long as it is straight up and his arms are straight up.

Christmas was straight up when he blocked Hood's dunk attempt. The contact was created by Hood when he brought his arm down for the dunk. As you stated, Christmas' hand got all ball.

You cannot call a foul on the defensive player on a play like that.
