Live Blog: Hornets vs. Clippers(04/15/2008)

Dave Gladow:
I'm here live in the Arena, and we're ready to watch the Hornets clinch the Southwest Division.

Dave Gladow:
Or else they'll fall flat on their faces and embarrass us all.

Dave Gladow:
Either way, it promises to be an entertaining game!

Dave Gladow:
The Arena is filling up slowly but surely -- it's more of a festive atmosphere tonight with fans mulling around the concourses and enjoying themselves.   This is a record-breaking team, and the Hornets ARE in the playoffs, but I'm greedy -- I want that No. 2 seed.   Let's hope the team doesn't come out in a similar celebratory mood.

Al Thornton is in the starting lineup for the Clippers tonight -- that's my girlfriend's boy: FSU alum.   I'll be watching him tonight.

Dave Gladow:
Familiar starting lineup for New Orleans:   Tyson Chandler, David West, Peja Stojakovic, Morris Peterson, and Chris Paul
Tuesday April 15, 2008 7:09 Dave Gladow
7:10
Dave Gladow:
Can't argue with that, unless you want to quibble over Mo-Pete.   And I wouldn't, seeing as how his game has gotten better over the past month and Bonzi provides such a great spark off the bench.

we need to start "D"ing up
Tuesday April 15, 2008 7:12 Oates
7:13
Dave Gladow:
I'll agree with that -- 9 times out of 10, when this team is having issues, it's because the defense is lagging.

On the other hand, the offense has let the team down in losses to defensive stalwarts like Utah and Detroit.
Tuesday April 15, 2008 7:13 Dave Gladow
7:14
Dave Gladow:
Let's just hope for a complete effort the rest of the way.
Tuesday April 15, 2008 7:14 Dave Gladow
7:15
Dave Gladow:

Five  months ago I'd cringe when David West would shoot falling away from the hoop, but he's gotten really consistent with the fadeaway ... so much so that I'm reminded of Karl Malone at times.

Amen.   It looks like a pretty full house and some late stragglers are still making their way in.   I hope they can get loud and rowdy.

7:23
Dave Gladow:
I don't know what to make of the Clippers.   They seemed to be turning things around, then this season happened.   Of course injuries had a lot to do with their struggles, but man, the bottom really fell out on them.

They need Elton Brand back next year in a very big way.
Tuesday April 15, 2008 7:23 Dave Gladow

Dave Gladow:
With 5:47 left in the first, Hornets lead 16-15.

At least most of the dregs of the NBA can sollace themselves on the fact Michael Beasley declared for the Draft yesterday. Wonder if the Heat are licking their chops right about now?

Dave Gladow:
Good point.   He's rolling with an absurd 18 points so far.   Everyone else is taking a back seat, including...

CP3 MVP watch:
1 rebound,  4 assists.
Tuesday April 15, 2008 7:29 Dave Gladow
7:30

Dave Gladow:
Team has been playing some zone, but you can blame Peja and West for a lot of his success so far ... then again, it's not like the guy has been on an island out there.   He's just hitting shots.
Tuesday April 15, 2008 7:33 Dave Gladow

Tuesday April 15, 2008 7:35 Oates
7:37
Dave Gladow:

Clippers' Maggette misses two free throws, but the Hornets can't box out and the Clippers get the last shot ... and Maggette is fouled again and hits both.   Rough end to the period.

End of quarter:   Hornets 26, Clippers 26.

[Comment From OatesOates: ]
I am watching on ESPN GameCast, so I never see what is actually taking place. Pargo is just as bad as James when it comes to taking too many shots.
Tuesday April 15, 2008 7:55 Oates
7:55
Dave Gladow:
He shoots it okay -- I guess I just feel more comfortable with Pargo shooting since he has the ability to get hot.
Tuesday April 15, 2008 7:55 Dave Gladow
7:56
[Comment From OatesOates: ]
yeah, I agree with that. The starters need to get this thing going.
Tuesday April 15, 2008 7:56 Oates

Dave Gladow:
Some bumbling around by the Hornets has given the Clippers the lead: 38-37.
Tuesday April 15, 2008 7:56 Dave Gladow
7:58
Dave Gladow:
CP3, West, Chandler, Peja ... yeah, these guys should be able to get a few buckets.
Tuesday April 15, 2008 7:58 Dave Gladow
7:59
Dave Gladow:
Runout and CP3 finishes ... that's like an oasis in the desert right about now.

I love Paul, but Kobe should be MVP. Paul's performance down the stretch has been a disgrace
Tuesday April 15, 2008 8:07 Nate

Dave Gladow:
A disgrace?   That's not overstating things a touch?
Tuesday April 15, 2008 8:08 Dave Gladow

End of half:   Clippers 51, Hornets 49.
Tuesday April 15, 2008 8:08 Dave Gladow

Dave Gladow:
New Orleans couldn't take advantage of a late possession, missing a three as time ran down.
Tuesday April 15, 2008 8:09 Dave Gladow
8:10
[Comment From NateNate: ]
Eh, disgrace is relative. MVP candidate can't go 3/14 against the Kings. Can't wait till down 30 in the biggest game of the season and can't let Deron Williams continue the myth that he's Paul's kryptonite.
Tuesday April 15, 2008 8:10 Nate
8:10
[Comment From NateNate: ]
But I think Paul has had the best season of any PG since Magic, so eh...
Tuesday April 15, 2008 8:10 Nate
8:11
Dave Gladow:
I can agree with most of that.   You sell Williams a little short though ... that guy is right up there with Paul and Nash among elite point guards playing the game right now.
Tuesday April 15, 2008 8:11 Dave Gladow
8:12
[Comment From NateNate: ]
The D looks good tonight. Clips hitting some tough shots and the refs treating Maggette like he's Jordan
Tuesday April 15, 2008 8:12 Nate
8:13
Dave Gladow:
Again, I mostly agree.   The Clippers are shooting 50 percent, but that's more to their credit than because of any New Orleans defensive deficiencies.   Maggette got bailed out a couple of times, but that can happen with just about anyone.   Sometimes a guy gets the calls.
Tuesday April 15, 2008 8:13 Dave Gladow
8:14
Dave Gladow:
West has 24 at the half to lead all scorers.
Tuesday April 15, 2008 8:14 Dave Gladow
8:15
Dave Gladow:
Armstrong did some nice work on the boards off the bench with 6.

Paul has 4 and 6 ... another slow start for him.

Al Thornton is the Clippers' leading scorer with 13 (but again, some of those were tough shots).
Tuesday April 15, 2008 8:15 Dave Gladow
8:18
Dave Gladow:
Mo-Pete is doing a solid job -- seven points and two assists -- but this team usually is not in good shape if Peterson is its second-leading scorer.   Peja and Paul need to step things up a tad...
Tuesday April 15, 2008 8:18 Dave Gladow
8:19
Dave Gladow:
* two steals
Tuesday April 15, 2008 8:19 Dave Gladow
8:23
Who is the Hornets' X-Factor for the playoffs?
Mo-Pete
 ( 0% )
Bonzi
 ( 29% )
Peja
 ( 43% )
Ju-Ju
 ( 29% )

Tuesday April 15, 2008 8:23
8:25
Dave Gladow:
Man, Peja even missed a bunny!   ... good thing Chandler was there for cleanup detail.
Tuesday April 15, 2008 8:25 Dave Gladow

[Comment From cadecade: ]
why has cp3 been so quite?
Tuesday April 15, 2008 8:27 cade
8:28
Dave Gladow:
Easy answer:   He gets tons of attention anytime he penetrates, meaning he's dishing the ball more.
Tuesday April 15, 2008 8:28 Dave Gladow
8:29
Dave Gladow:
Complicated answer:   Lots of factors, some of them having to do with the above and some having to do with how he traditionally plays (slow starter).
Tuesday April 15, 2008 8:29 Dave Gladow
8:29
Dave Gladow:
Watch for him this quarter -- he usually does damage in the third.

Tuesday April 15, 2008 8:34 tutt

Probably not good, to tell you the truth.   He'd have to win a pretty significant portion of the midwest, southeast and northeast vote, because Kobe is going to dominate the voting out west.
Tuesday April 15, 2008 8:35 Dave Gladow
8:35
Dave Gladow:

I don't think CP3 has a chance at MVP anymore. It seems destined for Kobe especially after Paul's last few games.

Tuesday April 15, 2008 8:37 cade
8:38
Dave Gladow:
There are definitely some exceptions to the rule (like Detroit), but that has been an interesting phenomenon.   I chalk it up to the team being so new to winning basketball.   Typically teams on the rise don't have the killer instinct the more established teams do.

Man, get Paul the frack out of there!   He's just racking up meaningless stats at this stage of the game.

Keep that man fresh (and healthy) for the playoffs!

Paul takes a hard foul in the lane -- can't say I blame the Clippers at this point.   Hornets are just rubbing it in leaving Paul out there at this stage (5:44 left, 20-point lead).

Dave Gladow:
Hornets up 112-81, this game is over.   Paul finally sits (a couple of minutes too late if you ask me), and it looks like a division championship, folks!

Wright is up to 14 points tonight -- he has really developed this year.

Bowen and Ely getting the minutes here late.   I wonder if the Birdman will be able to contribute in a game situation come playoff time?   It doesn't look especially likely at the moment....

Still a shot at No. 1 if the Lakers lose.

My girl's boy Thornton put up 26 -- good night for him!

Better night for the Hornets though:   West with 32.   Paul with 22 and 12.

James and Peterson had nice nights as well ... really everyone did well except for Peja, and you've got to think he'll stop rushing his shot and get back to making it soon enough.

Anyway, another great night for the Hornets!   Congrats to them, congrats to the fans who made it out tonight, and congrats to all of New Orleans.   This team is a real winner.
