good evening, what are your thoughts on our defensive line w/out ellis, young, and thomas?? do you feel like hollis will be back or put on ir? thanks

5:32
Kevin Spain, T-P:
I'm a little surprised that Thomas hasn't been put on IR yet, especially if they're planning on putting him there ... maybe they're still waiting on some kind of evaluation for him. As for the rest of the defensive, they should be all right when the regular season comes around  --  I think Ellis will be OK by then. The news here is that Antwan Lake will be starting for Ellis tonight, and it should be interesting to see how that line does while quite short-handed. They're going to need  to see some  plays from Grant and Smith, as well as McCray.

Someone at the TImes-Pic needs to ask Gary Gibbs (through Payton if necessary) what in the hell kind of defensive scheme it is that they are running. Specifically. Because Jason David and the rest of the secondary don't appear to be doing what he has in mind. The Saints pick up Jason David, a Superbowl winning CB in a cover 2/3 defense, and proceed to send him out there to make a fool of himself. They are ruining the guy's career. What is the scheme, and why is it not working?????

Just ask the question "What kind of defense is this, what scheme?" and report what they say.
Saturday August 23, 2008 5:33 stujo4
5:37
Kevin Spain, T-P:

Hey Stujo,

That’s a fair question, and we do speak to Gary Gibbs quite a bit, and the answer is  rarely that simple – either for him to explain or for us to report in simple terms. Sometimes the Saints run straight man-to-man, sometimes they run the Cover 2, sometimes they divide their secondary into zone-man mixes where the corners and safeties are responsible for the four quarters of the field or three thirds of the field if a safety is moved up into the front seven. … And it’s not always that easy to tell who is to blame. Just the other day, Gibbs said that safety Kevin Kaesviharn didn’t drop far enough back in coverage, leaving David without help.

Usually, we’ll ask specific questions about a specific play, and on several occasions last year, David did miss assignments, when he was responsible for a man running deep down the field. A consistent problem for David  was that he let guys get behind him when he didn’t have help. In the Cover 2, which he ran primarily in Indianapolis, the safeties are often behind him to pick up deep coverage.

The bigger picture issue which has been addressed, though, is that the Saints never had a good enough pass rush on a consistent basis last year. And they’re hoping that newcomers like Sedrick Ellis, Bobby McCray and even Jonathan Vilma can help in that department.

Will Meachem play with the starters today?
Saturday August 23, 2008 5:38 Eric
5:39
Teddy, T-P:
I wouldn't expect Meachem to see a whole lot of time with the starters tonight. Payton made that comment a couple of days ago about Henderson being a first-string player and Meachem still having a ways to go before he reaches that point. I think Meachem is going to have to make some big plays with the second team before he gets to that position he was in during the first preseason game, when there were more injuries.

Whats your thoughts on Tracy Porter starting?
Saturday August 23, 2008 5:39 #1SaintsFan
5:42
Mike Triplett:

Hey #1 Saints fan,

I don't think this is a sign that he'll be starting in Week 1 -- unless he has a great performance ove rthe next two weeks. But I do think it's a sign that the Saints are hoping he steps up quickly.

They're using this to get him some very valuable experience and to get a good look at what he's capable of. ... I think McKenzie and Gay will be starting in Week 1, though, and I think Usama Young is still ahead of Porter, assuming he can return soon from his hamstring injury.

Saturday August 23, 2008 5:42 Mike Triplett
5:42
Teddy, T-P:
I would expect the performance from the Saints to be better tonight. It helps that Chad Johnson and T.J. Houshmandzadeh won't be playing -- but with Porter and Lake starting for the first time, we don't exactly know what we're going to get. Look at it this way -- a quarterback can't really have a much better game against the Saints than Schaub had last week.

Mike Triplett:
Honestly, it's not because there is such a great rift between Horn and Sean Payton that they could never come together again ... But Horn just isn't what he used to be anymore. The Saints love David Patten in that veteran role, and they don't really have a spot where Horn would fit.

how will jeremy shockey help our offense?
Saturday August 23, 2008 5:45 legrassaints
5:46
Teddy, T-P:

I think Shockey will just add another option to this offense. As I said in an earlier chat, I don't see him being the go-to guy on a team with Colston and Bush. But Shockey is another physical guy on the field, another option, another upgrade to a position that could be used more and  make the offense just a little bit better.

What are the chances that Orien Harris starts ahead of Brian Young in the regular season. I really love that guy. Who Dat!
Saturday August 23, 2008 5:46 David Robbins
5:48
Mike Triplett:
Hey David,
Let's not go that far just yet. Harris has had some nice performances so far in the preseason, which I think will earn him a roster spot. But I don't think we've seen enough to expect him to start ahead of Brian Young or Kendrick Clancy or Antwan Lake, for that matter. ... The Saints are Harris' fourth team in two years. It looks like he's finally starting to tap into his potential, and he'll play a lot tonight with Young and Ellis both sitting out with injuries.

[Comment From CalebCaleb: ]
I heard the Saints might actually place Adrian Arrington on injured reserve with his turf toe injury instead of risking him to the waiver wire. At least that way the Saints are ensured of keeping him and developing him another year. Any truth to this?
Saturday August 23, 2008 5:49 Caleb
5:52
Mike Triplett:
Hey Caleb,

I think those are the only two real options with Arrington at this point. ... If they put him on injured reserve, he can't practice with the team, though, so they'll probably only go that route if he's still gonna be on the shelf for another month or so.

I think they can get away with putting him on their practice squad if they go that route. Even though he showed some great potential early in camp, I don't know how many teams would want to sign him to their active 53-man roster while he's coming off of injury and he's only played in one preseason game.

Mike Triplett:
Hey Jerry, Who do you want to get rid of? ... Last season was certainly frustrating -- mostly because the Saints have built a team with more potential than any in those 40-plus years in the franchise's history. But they seemed to do a pretty good job of addressing their biggest problems with their offseason moves.

If they fall below .500 again this year, you'll get your wish. There won't be any legit excuses.

Teddy, T-P:
Just asked around for this one ... Fujita seems to be the pick as the emotional leader. I know I was just working on a story about Will Smith, and though he may seem quiet, he was described by several guys (coaches and players) as a leader of that defense. That said, I think there's certainly room left for more leadership, and I think it's going to come from someone who stands out in his play. I think the Saints would be in good shape if they eventually find it from Vilma.

Do the Saints feel in house that they are a superbowl contender, really? I think they are but if they don't why bother?
Saturday August 23, 2008 5:58 Carnell in Dallas
6:01
Mike Triplett:
Hey Carnell,

Yeah, I really think they do. I just sat down with Payton and Loomis and Brees among others for our big picture season preview story for next Sunday's special section, and they all kept referring to the "window of opportunity." Payton and Loomis said as long as they have Brees as their quarterback, their window of opportunity is now, and I wholeheartedly agree with that concept. Brees makes them bona fide contenders.

That went into their thinking when they were so aggressive in adding those few missing pieces this year, even though it cost them a few draft picks.

Why do the Saints have Stecker above Thomas on the depth chart?
Saturday August 23, 2008 6:02 Bobby
6:04
Mike Triplett:
Hey Bobby, a lot of times, the Saints keep the veterans ahead of the young guys during the preseason -- the premise being that the young guy has to earn it before he can move ahead. They did the same thing with Jason David and Mark Simoneau in the starting lineup to start camp and Devery Henderson is still ahead of Robert Meachem for that reason.

Anyway, I think Thomas and Stecker will play different roles -- Thomas as more of a first- and second-down back in relief of Deuce, and Stecker more as a third-down back and pass catcher. ... If Deuce was to get hurt, I think Pierre might emerge as more of a featured guy, though.

Kevin Spain, T-P:
We can tell by the tone of questions we get every week that Saints fans are concerned and rightly so about the defense, but this team should be, without question, one of the best offenses in the NFL this season. I don't want to compare them with the Colts, but two season's ago, the Colts won a Super Bowl without having a very good defense.
Now, I'm saying this even though they were held to a field goal, I realize.  But I think this team is going to put up loads of points. They just need the defense to be OK, not great even, I think, and they can go a long way.

That was a good series for the Saints defense. They almost got a fumble and got some pressure on the quarterback to force an overthrow. That's what they've got to do more consistently. One of their downfalls last season, if I recall, was not forcing a lot of turnovers.

Good question, Paul. It's always questionable to play these guys coming back from injury. But, the coaches probably want them to have a chance to see action against someone other than their teammates in practice. But, you do risk things like watching Colston being taken off the field.

Can't really say anything bad about the Saints defense in the first half. They might not look like the '85 Bears, but they didn't let the Bengals get into scoring position at all. They gave up the one big pass to Chatman, but played pretty solid overall.

Palko won't be cut for an extra receiver. Teams always keep a third QB. If he's cut, it's because the Saints  found someone they like better at that spot.
Saturday August 23, 2008 8:13 Kevin Spain, T-P
8:14
Dave Gladow, NOLA.com:

They have an interesting decision to make at QB.   They've already put a lot of time into Palko, so they probably dont want to set him loose.   On the other hand, we know Brees and Brunell can hold the QB spot down between the two of them if they really want to save a roster spot for someone else.   I think they keep him.

As for WR, I like Colston, Patten, Moore, Meachem, Copper and Arrington (if he can get back soon).

Word from the pressbox is that there is no word on the Colston and Bush injuries because the NFL doesn't require teams to release injury information in the preseason. So they'd rather all you fans be worried sick about your team than to put your fears to rest by just letting everyone know. This is how crazy rumors get started.

Obvsiously with the market in San Antonio being so close to Dallas and the weight Jerry Jones pulls in the owners meetings on various boards, also an owners voting approval would be needed for the team to relocate, but I would tend to believe Benson would not buy fox tv if he had no plan of expanding his asset portfolio...with gov. jindal recently saying he wants to the Saints to stay longterm and being an avid supporter for the Saints, do you think they would ever build another stadium or do you think they will turn the Superdome into an entirely almost new updated facility with the grants and donated money invested by former commissioner paul taglibue?
Saturday August 23, 2008 8:50 Jonathan
8:51
Kevin Spain, T-P:
It doesn't matter on either front. It's not about being a Saints fan for Jindal. He has to make the best deal for the State. And, it doesn't matter about Nagin's two cents, the Dome is run by a state organization, the city is out of it on that.

Stay in Superdome

Go to LA

The new stadium would provide more income per game for the Saints owner, and in the case that Benson would own such a facility himself, it would increase the value of the franchise. The local economy would have to provide a large number of business interests with the wherewithall to buy suites, etc, at prices substantially higher than they are currently in the Dome.

Perhaps.   Not this week (most likely), but it could happen.   He has to show he can contribute as a nickel/dime.

Yeah that's true about Palmers, it's a typical rolleyes Bengals moment when you see a franchise qb strugging so much for any support.

How has Bushrod done this camp? Do he or Alleman get to actually play this year, or will Nicks bump one of them off the roster?

Carl Nicks seems like a good one if he can keep his nose clean, pretty excited about him.

One observation- the O line hasn't mastered run blocking, yet. On a slightly tangential note- Has anyone listening to Bobby Hebert on WWL noticed that his ongoing commentary on the new NFL rules of conduct seems to betray a certain, distinct animous towards those changes? He relly seems bent out of shape about that

It's a maybe.   He needs to get on the field or he'll be a surefire practice squad guy.

And with that pick, Lance Schulters has gone from FA pickup to best FS since Sammy Knight.

Defense recording a shutout, that's nice, Bengals played completely uninspired ball though.

Sammy Knight was a big play guy though, showing up when you needed him a lot of the time. Missed quality on this defense.

It's about time our D steps up, even if against an inferior team. You get beat as much as our D does that stuff sticks with you.

Dave Gladow, NOLA.com:
I think we've covered the major points already, but I'll just add that this is the step I expected the Saints to take, and I'm glad they did.   It means, at least to me, that the Saints D is not as awful as originally thought, but it also doesn't necessarily mean they're going to be good either.

Yeah, go defense, it's great moral victory to shut out a team with one of the best qb's in the league, even if his wr's were out.

Hope everyone has a good rest of their weekend and stays safe!
