SEC Media Days, Day Two(07/24/2008)
9:57
Darrell KSR:
Yawwwn.     OK, so we're a tad late in starting this morning.   Blame it on the alarm clock; I will.

Georgia's Mark Richt is up.   Says his team--picked by some to compete for the national championship--can lose to any team on his schedule.

He says he feels "relieved" when he wins a game.   Any game.
Thursday July 24, 2008 9:57 Darrell KSR
10:05
Darrell KSR:
Coach Richt is changing his demeanor, as it did during the season last   year.     He said it takes too much energy to get in official's faces, and it really doesn't do any good--although that is more of his personality, according to his family.

Richt initially was not in favor of the early signing date--does not like more official visits during the season, while you are trying to coach your team.

With restrictions on official visits, Richt's concern dissipated -- and tagging that on to the early signing date, and his mind has changed.

[Comment From CozyDCozyD: ]
don't think I'd set my alarm clock to catch Richt, either. Just kidding, he's a solid, hard-nosed coach.
Thursday July 24, 2008 10:17 CozyD
10:18
Darrell KSR:
Thanks, Cozy.   He's a solid coach, though, that's for sure.   Just spent some time "explaining" the intentional celebration penalty last year.   Kinda funny--he basically said it was a little more than he thought it would be--in his mind, he envisioned 11 people jumping up and down celebrating until the official threw the flag.

The funniest thing is that he said the play was under review, and had it been reversed, it would've been 3rd down and 30, and ugly, and backfire.
Thursday July 24, 2008 10:18 Darrell KSR
10:21
[Comment From CozyDCozyD: ]
You know, thats quite an insight. I can't say I recall the play going under review, but wow, what a backfire it would have turned into.

Darrell KSR:
Amusing note observed by Larry Vaught.   Today is the day Alabama and Coach Nick Saban visit SEC media.   Naturally, the lobby is overflowing with Alabama fans.

Nick Saban, aka, "Rock Superstar," arrives.

He scoots through the lobby and barely glances anywhere other than straight ahead.   Fan-friendly, he is not.   That's to say the least.
Thursday July 24, 2008 10:24 Darrell KSR
10:27
Darrell KSR:
Larry Vaught had a chance to visit with Max Howell, former football coach and host of a syndicated radio show.   He has an interview posted with him in several threads on the premium board, but I'll share a couple of the more interesting comments in a minute here.
Thursday July 24, 2008 10:27 Darrell KSR
10:32
Darrell KSR:
Question: Has the perception of Rich Brooks changed across the SEC with people you know?

Howell: “I don’t think there is any doubt about that. He has been at Oregon and the NFL and a lot of people questioned if this wasn’t just his last stop to pad his retirement package. Now when he does retire, he has Joker Phillips lined up to take his job. That’s smart. I really do.

“Coaches, teams, players and future recruits don’t want to go through not knowing what to expect. Everybody knows when Joker will go the field, and that’s a very, very good move.

“But this is a critical year for Rich and Joker. If they get six wins, it would do a lot for them.”
Thursday July 24, 2008 10:32 Darrell KSR
10:32
Darrell KSR:
Question: What changed the perception about Brooks? Was it back-to-back years with eight wins and bowl victories? Was it the win over LSU? Was it recruiting?

Howell: “I just think they are in the SEC and have now become a legitimate competitor. When you beat the team that ends up becoming the national champion and get your bowl victories, people notice. Kentucky had been placed in the same category with Vanderbilt -- almost getting there but not quite making it. I think coach Brooks has them over the hump and I hope that is the legacy he leaves for Joker Phillips.”

The church has taken on a hushed tone...err, media room, as Saban takes the stand.
Thursday July 24, 2008 10:53 Darrell KSR
10:57
Darrell KSR:
Saban mentions that Forbes Magazine named the University of Alabama the # 7 best University/most affordable/best opportunities in the nation, and that is important in their recruiting, and what they intended to do.
Thursday July 24, 2008 10:57 Darrell KSR
10:59
Darrell KSR:
Saban mentioned the only game they played the whole game was Tennessee.   Said they played down to teams last year.

On a completely, 100% coincidental note, I grabbed a cap to wear when playing in the SEC Media Golf tournament this afternoon.   Yeah, it is my La.-Monroe Warhawk cap.

Coincidence, I tell you.

Darrell KSR:
Question to Saban -- how do you handle the mediocrity of the last several seasons?

Answer:   We'll try to get better.
Thursday July 24, 2008 11:05 Darrell KSR
11:06
Darrell KSR:
And the expected question comes, with a typical smart-aleck Saban response:

Question -- what's the response to all the off field trouble Alabama has had in the last year?

Answer:   Unfortunately to you all, we have 25 or 30 guys in the program that are doing extremely well.

Darrell KSR:
"From the outside looking in, you appear more relaxed this year."

Wow.   I thought he looked as stiff as a board.   And the numerous shots he has taken at the media, the ignoring of the fans, and the general attitude just doesn't appear to be a "relaxed" kind of appearance.

Saban appeared on a local news broadcast last week in a tiny fishing boat with Paul Finebaum and Rick Karle.   Maybe that's him being relaxed.

Saban ended his press conference with a sort of strange comment after it was officially "over."   After taking shots at the media time and time again -- including today--he ended it by saying he would like to thank the entire media, that we did a great job of taking the information, and promoting the game, and the SEC, to all the fans, in a very professional way, etc.
Just strange.

Lonny Demaree and Larry Vaught will be casting votes, too, as KSR has all four of us providing our input.

BIRMINGHAM | University of Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer was issued a subpoena to testify in former Alabama booster Wendell Smith’s lawsuit against the National Collegiate Athletic Association and others Thursday morning. Fulmer was ordered to appear Sept. 25, at the law firm of Blankenship, Harrelson & Wollitz, LLC in Birmingham. Fulmer was handed the subpoena, which was made official Wednesday by the circuit court of Jackson County, as he walked down radio row at SEC Media Days at the Wynfrey Hotel. Fulmer has never testified under oath about his involvement with the NCAA’s investigation of Alabama football, which led to probation and loss of scholarships. Under the advice of his attorneys, he skipped the 2004 Media Days, and was fined $10,000 by the SEC, after attorneys for former Alabama coaches Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams vowed to issue a similar subpoena.

Of course the early signing period for football would likely work to the advantage of UK, because we wouldn't lose early comittments to larger schools as they miss out on their "priority" recruits and then offer guys who have committed to us.

I think it would require coaches to target kids earlier and earlier--meaning young and younger--so if that's a concern (the age of recruits), then the early signing period might be a step in the wrong direction.

It would be great for us@ Kentucky44. We tend to recruit against UT a lot for their instate kids and we're beginning to recruit against UGA and Auburn for a lot of Georgia kids. We need every advantage we can get.

I would think that allowing official visits after the players junior year (meaning during the summer months) wouldn't hurt coaches preparation for games at all. And it would also allow kids to commit and sign earlier. But I'm sure there's more to it than that.

While we have a minute before Phil Fulmer of UT arrives -- in a bad mood, no doubt -- let's go over a Rule change I did not mention yesterday, yet another "clock rule" change.
Thursday July 24, 2008 1:07 Darrell KSR
1:08
Darrell KSR:
This is from Rogers Redding of the NCAA:

Redding -- "One of the major changes around the clock this year is the 40-second clock. For all of our lives in college football we've been used to the referee marking the ball ready for play and starting the 25-second clock on every single play. For the first time in the history of college football, that's not going to be the case most of the time. We're going to what's called the 40-second clock.

The way it's going to work is when the ball is dead without any signal from the referee, just a dead-ball signal from the covering official, the 40-second clock will start ticking down. So that's the length of time the team will have to put the ball in play. The referee will not declare it ready for play. It will be ready for play when the umpire places the ball on the ground and steps away.

There will be many times in the game when we will go to the 25-second clock because of administrative stoppages, if there's a penalty enforcement, a timeout, a media timeout, injured player, dog runs on the field any number of things that will cause us to shut it down and then go to 25 seconds. In those cases, the referee will chop it or start the 25-second clock as he always has in the past.

Most of the time the clock will go to 40 seconds after every play, then start clicking down. So that's a major change.

Another change with regard to the clock rule is when the ball goes out of bounds.

Again, for all of our lives, when the ball has gone out of bounds, the ball carrier go out of bounds, fumble, backwards pass goes out-of-bounds, the clock will stop, and will continue to stop like it always has. Now, instead of starting on the snap, the clock is going to start when the ball is ready for play, when the referee gives the line the clock signal, except in the last two minutes of each half, that is the second quarter and fourth quarter, the clock will start on the snap like it always has.

The way to think about this is like a first down. On a first down, we stop the clock and then it starts on the referee's signal. That's going to be the case. When the ball goes out of bounds, the clock will stop and it will start when the referee gives the signal. So those are the two major clock rules that are in play for this year for the first time."

Darrell KSR:
HOOVER, Ala. (AP) — Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer denied reports Thursday that he was served with a subpoena to testify in an Alabama court case while appearing at the annual Southeastern Conference football media days.

The Tuscaloosa News reported that Fulmer was served with the document inside the hotel where the event was held, but the coach later disputed the report.

“I don’t know anything about a subpoena,” Fulmer told a small group of reporters.

Attorneys have been seeking his sworn statements in a lawsuit filed by former Alabama booster Wendell Smith against the NCAA. A clerk in Jackson County confirmed to The Associated Press that the subpoena was issued Wednesday but did not know whether it had been given to Fulmer.

The clerk said Fulmer was ordered to appear to give a deposition on Sept. 25 in Birmingham. The date is two days before Tennessee plays at Auburn.

Fulmer participated in SEC media days by telephone from Tennessee four years ago. That move let him avoid coming to Alabama and possibly being forced to testify in another case involving an NCAA investigation of the Crimson Tide.

Phil Fulmer agrees with Brian Eldridge.   "It's a pain in the butt.   I wish they'd just leave it (the clock rule) alone."

Darrell KSR:
Fulmer's session is winding down.

Will have to go ahead and close the Blog today so that I can make my tee time.   For those that have stayed this long, or read this far, a little bonus -- USUALLY Charles Bloom of the SEC has the "All-SEC tabulations" with him at the golf course, and you may get a sneak preview of the team before it is officiallay released.

Check back on the message boards for that.

So thanks all for joining and/or reading today, and be SURE to join us bright and early tomorrow for the Kentucky Wildcats and head coach RICH BROOKS, and players JEREMY JARMON and DICKY LYONS, JR.   See you then.
