Hey SFAJACKS, this chat is for the NCAA 09 release which came out today.   Although to answer your question, yes, I see the Jacks sweeping it!

Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:33 Gatorpilot
4:39
Pete Holiday:
SFAJACKS asked if the Southland was represented in the game, and I haven't seen them yet. I'm pretty sure you can't play as any of those teams.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:39 Pete Holiday
4:39
Gatorpilot:
Yeah, I believe this year's FCS coverage is pretty light.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:39 Gatorpilot
4:40
Pete Holiday:
I'm trying to see how they're covered in Dynasty mode at the moment when they play a D-IA team (I refuse to use the silly new designations)

Gatorpilot:
Holiday, do you have the game?

Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:41 Gatorpilot
4:41
Adam Jacobi:
Re: light FCS coverage--That's an interesting decision by EA. Obviously the benchmarks for success and failure aren't going to be decided by I-AA stuff, but usually sports video game franchises  expand in scope as time goes by.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:41 Adam Jacobi
4:41
Pete Holiday:
I do -- it's running in the background as we speak.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:41 Pete Holiday
4:42
Pete Holiday:
Teece -- I haven't been following the forums, but I haven't noticed any major glitches in my few hours of playing quite yet.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:42 Pete Holiday
4:42
Gatorpilot:
I'm still more or less disappointed by "next gen" NCAA 09.   The big difference from the first gen (Xbox, for me) to next-gen (360) is that a lot of the fluidity of the game was gone.   A lot of depth disappeared from the game too.   It seems like a relatively minor update to me so far.

Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:42 Gatorpilot
4:43
Gatorpilot:
I'm hearing good things about the deep ball being more manageable this year.   It's easier to put touch on the ball so you can loft it over DBs or LBs.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:43 Gatorpilot
4:44
Adam Jacobi:

By fluidity, are you talking about animation, or the ease of gameplay, or what?

Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:44 Adam Jacobi
4:44
CollegeFootballResource:
Matt Leinart style instead of John David Booty style
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:44 CollegeFootballResource
4:44
Pete Holiday:
I've had a lot more luck with the passing game this year for sure, I tend to be more of a runner, but I was whipping the ball all over the place last night.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:44 Pete Holiday
4:44
[Comment From Rick NeuheiselRick Neuheisel: ]
Does the game offer bowl games (BSC?) or is it just regular season?
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:44 Rick Neuheisel
4:44
Gatorpilot:
The 08 version, you had pretty much one option for deep ball: your speedy receiver gets in front of the corner and the safety comes forward rather than helping out his CB.   Fly route, that's it.   Throwing on a deep post was almost always a pick if there was a DB anywhere nearby.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:44 Gatorpilot
4:45
Gatorpilot:
Yes, BCS games are in there.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:45 Gatorpilot
4:45
Gatorpilot:
Jacobi, regarding fluidity -- both, I guess.   It just still feels choppy and unnatural when the players run.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:45 Gatorpilot
4:45
Pete Holiday:
Full compliment of bowl games. I'm not as dedicated as some -- I haven't worked all the way through a dynasty yet.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:45 Pete Holiday
4:45
[Comment From TeeceTeece: ]
Holiday -- There has been a bunch of complaints about the game freezing when using downloaded rosters. Lots of complaints about "disappearing backfields."
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:45 Teece
4:46
Pete Holiday:
I haven't downloaded any rosters yet, but in several hours of playing I've never had my backfield disappear... I hope it never does.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:46 Pete Holiday
4:46
Pete Holiday:
I'll go grab a roster now and see how it goes. Hopefully there's a way to revert back to the defaults. :)
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:46 Pete Holiday
4:46
Adam Jacobi:
Teece -- Are the complaints specific to a certain platform?
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:46 Adam Jacobi
4:46
Gatorpilot:
You sure you're not playing as Mississippi State?   There's a "disappearing backfield," heh heh.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:46 Gatorpilot
4:47
CollegeFootballResource:
The roster stuff seems to be THE complaint I hear about
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:47 CollegeFootballResource

CollegeFootballResource:
Disappearing?   You mean never was?
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:47 CollegeFootballResource
4:47
Gatorpilot:
Yes, I'm hearing that one a lot too.   Also there appears to be some stats problems when simming.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:47 Gatorpilot
4:48
CollegeFootballResource:
My big question is can a two-loss LSU make it to the title game in this version of the game
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:48 CollegeFootballResource
4:48
Adam Jacobi:
Word on the street is that there's still no "brawl" option. That's a shame.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:48 Adam Jacobi
4:48
Pete Holiday:
EA seems to be getting more complaints this year than I remember about the 08 launch.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:48 Pete Holiday
4:49
[Comment From TeeceTeece: ]
A. Jacobi -- I have the 360, so I've been paying attention to that mostly, but I've seen some PS3 and PS2 complaints also.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:49 Teece
4:49
Gatorpilot:
Well, I saw one simmed season (from last week, advance copy) in which the national champion of the 08 season was Wisconsin -- they beat Miami (OH) for the crystal football!
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:49 Gatorpilot
4:50
Adam Jacobi:
CFR-- I read some reviews where they were consistently getting around  five  undefeated teams a year. How EA hasn't fixed that after years and years of unrealistic sims is beyond me.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:50 Adam Jacobi

Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:51 Teece
4:52
Gatorpilot:
Did you have to reserve your copy, Pete?
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:52 Gatorpilot
4:52
Pete Holiday:
Nah, the walmart super-center in town had a bunch of copies last night and nobody in the store.

Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:53 Gatorpilot

Gatorpilot:
How does JP Wilson look, Pete, stats-wise?
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:53 Gatorpilot
4:54
Pete Holiday:
I was kinda shocked that EA has ESPN radio playing through the TV when you log in.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:54 Pete Holiday
4:54
CollegeFootballResource:
And what to make of Jimmy Johns being on the roster?
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:54 CollegeFootballResource
4:54
Gatorpilot:
Oh, they had that last year.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:54 Gatorpilot

Accuracy wise? I'd say he's a bit high
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:54 Pete Holiday

Pete Holiday:
Which I'll take any day.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:54 Pete Holiday

Has anyone uploaded a roster on EA Locker where he's listed as "Sarah Jessica Parker Wilson" yet?

Why is 2K Sports a better company in terms of sporting games than EA even though you try to have a monoply of sporting games
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:55 Scott

Gatorpilot:
I haven't played a 2K game in awhile.
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:55 Gatorpilot

I was never a fan of the 2K games, personally
Tuesday July 15, 2008 4:56 CollegeFootballResource

EA's defense is that the NCAA, NFL, etc. courted them, not the other way around, for the exclusive deal.

EA's been getting away from playability for the past few years, unfortunately. Their NBA franchise is miserably bad.

One thing that I do notice every year is that the animations get better and better -- it wasn't too many years ago that you could "catch" a ball that was 4' from your hands.

I remember the days when you could pick off a pass or pick up a fumble just by having the ball touch any part of your player. Strange when it hits a guy square in the backside and all of a sudden it's a turnover.

Ditto. I was in grad school when '05 dropped and my roommates and I thought we'd go 30 seasons deep (as we did with '04). I think we played 2 seasons total. What a terrible game that was.

I've never been near as good as the hardcore players. But this year seems more about strategy than anything. You have to pick good plays and make good adjustments pre-snap. I think that's what most opinions are giong to be based off of (hence the "THERE'S NO DEFENSE!") complaints

I've got a general question... Before 08 released, some sites were saying you would have to keep players academically eligible between games. The only iteration of this I saw was on the Campus Legend mode. Does anyone know why this was scrapped? I'm guessing b/c recuiting takes so damn long now. I did play the demo and enjoyed choosing the coverage the D ran after I threw a pick.

I won a title in 08 with Illinois, on dynasty mode, Heisman.   VERY hard and it required some "cheese" - certain plays simply will never work.   But it was doable.   A Div-IAA team beating more than one Div-IA team, very very very very hard on Heisman.

With any game you can nit-pick and find things that are broken or weird, but by and large (ignoring the roster/freezing issues) this is another step along the progression. I've liked the more natural movements, even it it makes them look a bit more awkward at times.
