Live Chat: WGSO's week in sports(05/09/2008)

Dave Gladow:
Welcome to today's chat, folks!   We're sure to get into tons of Hornets talk today, following the team's tough Game 3 loss to the Spurs, but we'll try to get to any questions or comments you want to make, regardless of sport.

Dave Gladow:
In my personal opinion, the most interesting thing of all about last night's game was the lack of effectiveness of the Hornets bench.   This is going to happen against elite teams in a seven-game series:   your bench will eventually have an off game.   What will decide the series is whether the bench can rebound or not.

I think they can.

Dave Gladow:

Some of that was intentional ... the Spurs did not want the outside shooting to kill them in this game, meaning Peja got a little extra attention than normal.   It was definitely an effective strategy.

And, yes, CP3 and West didn't get the help they needed last night.

Friday May 9, 2008 12:02 Jude Young
12:03
Dave Gladow:

I think that's what the Hornets want though.   They are the exact opposite of the Spurs, in that they want to encourge the outside shooting ... if the Spurs do that they're going to get buried.

MoPete, Bonzi, & Peja definitely all had an "off" night. Assuming the Spurs will use the same strategy in Game 4 on Sunday, how will Byron Scott counter his strategy?

Friday May 9, 2008 12:05 Jude Young
12:05
Dave Gladow:

Scott may be a bit more fluid with his substitution patterns  next game,  but I think the main thing you'll see is a bit more energy out of the subs ... he can't be happy with them right now and will get on them in practice.

With Tony Parker now guarding CP3, does CP3 have enough in the tank to play defense and still be effective on the offensive boars...I mean at some point someone other than DWest has to step up?
Friday May 9, 2008 12:06 Jonathan
12:07
Dave Gladow:
Last night I wanted to see better rebounding out of Chandler than I did.   That was a little disappointing, but frankly, Duncan is flippin' good.   People tend to forget that.
Friday May 9, 2008 12:07 Dave Gladow
12:08
[Comment From JonathanJonathan: ]
I can remember after the Spurs made an 11-0 run later in the 4th seeing DWest so angry he just kept hitting the benches table...Is he just frustrated at himself or the team? I think he was goin to knock Oberto out last night.
Friday May 9, 2008 12:08 Jonathan
12:10
Dave Gladow:
They're all going to be frustrated, West more so because he's a very emotional guy.   I wouldn't read too much into it ... I think he just wanted to win the thing and saw it slipping away.   If he's got a problem with someone's play, he'll handle it in a professional manner ... not call him out in the media or something.
Friday May 9, 2008 12:10 Dave Gladow
12:11
Jude Young:
Jonathan, DWest needs to keep his emotions in check. We've seen him lose his cool during stressful road games before.
Friday May 9, 2008 12:11 Jude Young
12:11
Dave Gladow:
CP3 vs. Parker is basically a wash.   They'll each fly past each other and make tons of plays.   The key is how the rest of the teams step up.
Friday May 9, 2008 12:11 Dave Gladow
12:11
[Comment From JonathanJonathan: ]
I mean DWest is a boxer in the offseason...you know that sort of mentality. I love the guy. He's my favorite player because he doesn't stand down.
Friday May 9, 2008 12:11 Jonathan
12:12
Jude Young:
Good point, Dave. West is a classy guy. But, he needs to be careful not toallow instigators on the court to throw off his game.
Friday May 9, 2008 12:12 Jude Young
12:14
Dave Gladow:
By the way Jude, I think we were both wrong about this series.   I initially looked at the guards as being key, and you thought Ginobili was the x-factor.   So far, the post play has been the biggest factor of all.   Even in an off game from Peja and the bench, the Hornets were close in the fourth thanks to the front line ... and Paul's brilliance of course.
Friday May 9, 2008 12:14 Dave Gladow
12:14
Dave Gladow:
If Chandler and West can outplay Duncan, the Hornets will definitely take this series.
Friday May 9, 2008 12:14 Dave Gladow
12:14
[Comment From JonathanJonathan: ]
Personally, when he's mad I think he plays his best. Last night, I felt Bowen just totally shut down Peja though. Any chance we see Julian Wright play more? That kids got a bright future.
Friday May 9, 2008 12:14 Jonathan
12:18
Dave Gladow:

Wright is perfect in his current role:   120 miles an hour off the bench in short spurts.   Much of his effectiveness has been tied into his high-energy play (grabbing loose balls, generating steals, leading the break).   He'll grow into a major contributor eventually, but I love what he gives the team right now.

Friday May 9, 2008 12:18 Dave Gladow
12:18
[Comment From JonathanJonathan: ]
When Coach Scott took the starters out with a minute in a half left last night do you think he was sending the team a message, letting the loss settle so that he could use that as motivation for the next game or did he just deem it already over?
Friday May 9, 2008 12:18 Jonathan
12:20
Dave Gladow:
Again, I wouldn't read too much into it.   The game was basically over anyway ... if Pargo hits back-to-back 3s, maybe you rotate them back in, but as it was, it seemed the right call.   Just keep 'em healthy and rested for Game 4.
Friday May 9, 2008 12:20 Dave Gladow
12:21
[Comment From JonathanJonathan: ]
And I understand the philosophy that Melvin Ely has a "wide body" which is better for guarding T. Duncan, but he doesnt show much aggressiveness and seems slow many times. Why have we not seen more of Hilton Armstrong?
Friday May 9, 2008 12:21 Jonathan
12:22
Jude Young:
I guaranteed a Spurs win on my radio show. Game 3 for the World Champs with their backs against the wall. Now, let's see how the Hornets do when that emotion isn't as intense for SA.
Friday May 9, 2008 12:22 Jude Young
12:24
Dave Gladow:

I don't think it makes that big a difference, to tell you the truth.   Ely has had his ups and downs this series, and while Armstrong would probably do better on offense, he'd also get eaten alive on defense.

The Defending Champs have also 'never' repeated in back to back years, so if history repeats itself or is any indication than that means the Hornets are destined to win this series. Also, in the NBA playoffs, whichever team wins the first game 85% of the time goes on to win the series.

Hornets i feel stil can get ther in 5 but they will have to play with more consistency on the defensive side of the ball and the big thing they got out hustled last night seemed like every loose ball was scooped up by the Spurs

Emmanuel Pepis:

Hey Dave, what last night's game proved is that this is still the defending champions that the Hornets are facing. They will have to make some adjustments offensively and Jannero Pargo will have to use his best re-appearing act. Also I saw everyone except for Chris Paul disappear in the second half of last night's game. As great as Paul is, the contributions of all-star David West, rebounding of Tyson Chandler, and the x-factor in Peja. They have to just get back to basics.

Lcuky guy!

I would LOVE it if Chandler can get back to  demoralizing this team on the boards and with the occasional dunk, but you're right, it's a total team effort.

12:33
[Comment From JonathanJonathan: ]
Ellis is going to be a starter, no doubt about it, but who will he be playing next to? My guess is Brian Young because he's a better pass rusher than H. Thomas, who is overweight and too old, and on 3rd downs I expect C. Grant to play in the middle as a DT while Bobby McCray and Will Smith are on the ends. Also, is Will Smith or M. Colston close to getting their deals done?
Friday May 9, 2008 12:33 Jonathan
12:33
Emmanuel Pepis:

Bottom line: If the Hornets win Game 4 then it ends in 5. If the Spurs win Game 4 then this series goes the distance.

Friday May 9, 2008 12:33 Emmanuel Pepis
12:34

Utah is a brutal place to play.   Absolutely brutal.
Friday May 9, 2008 12:36 Dave Gladow
12:36
Emmanuel Pepis:
With regard to who will start next to Ellis, we will probably wind up seeing a rotation because none of the DTs the Saints have now can play every down in a game.
Friday May 9, 2008 12:36 Emmanuel Pepis
12:36
George Pepis:

Friday May 9, 2008 12:36 George Pepis

Oh it's not out of the realm of possibility, I just don't see L.A. taking this series in 4.

Friday May 9, 2008 12:37 Dave Gladow
12:37
Emmanuel Pepis:
The Jazz have to minimize the Lakers' possessions because the common theme is that when L.A. gets into the open floor, the Jazz can't run with them. If Sloan's crew can at least limit the Lakers' possessions and make them work for outside shots then that is the key for the Jazz to get back into this series.

This ties into the Chris Henry thing ... yeah, the Saints are happy with what they've got at the position.   Meachem is a guy who could really surprise, Copper and Henderson are decent options, and the team even traded into the draft to pick the kid out of Michigan, meaning they defnitely like him.

Will we see Reggie used more as a receiver in the slot this year? If we throw more dump off passes and screens to him with Colston and Meachem blocking in front, I think there's no stopping Reggie. He's a killer in space.

Jon, if they'e smart, you'll see more and more of Reggie in the slot.   He's not effective in the backfield, and that's no idictment on him, it's just fact.   He'd dangerous out wide, running screens, reverses and curls.

With the loss of Jeff Faine in free agency to Tampa, do you think Goodwin will fill the void left in the ability to change up calls at the line of scrimmage...he did well in his two games last year, but the jury's still out on him. And I understand the Saints wanting him to compete more at the position with Matt Lehr, but this guys tied to the steroid allegations coming out of Dallas. Couldn't we have picked someone else to compete with Goodwin for Center.?

Keith, the secondary will get better as the season goes along, but it's still a concern -- really the team's weakest spot.

that dude from indiana is the real deal trust me. And he's a local kid would bring in some more ticket sales

Jude Young:
Keith, another year of the dynamic duo of Bulllocks and Harper will take care of any secondary concerns. :)

If thats the dynamic duo then they to me closely resemble commisioner Gordon and his sidekick

Dave Gladow:

Gay helps matters, and there's tons of youth at cornerback.   If Kaes can get himself onto the field a bit more I think the secondary as a whole becomes more opportunisitc.

as long as we've got a pass rush youve got randall gay and mckenzie will b fine along with Harper and Kaesviharn will outseat Bullocks in training camp after one year in Payton's system.

there's a lot to look forward to considering the saints have the 6th easiest schedule this year, although i hate losing another home game...thanks nfl...roger goodell sucks! BUT we've also got 5 weeks on the road...thats tough.

if this secondary is on the improve 10-6 even 11-5 is the optimum for the Saints this year

But, the coaches looked at film and decided to address the pass rush first. If they're right, the Saints will likely contend for the Super Bowl.
