Chat with Mike Reiss at noon

Mike Reiss:
Good afternoon. Looking forward to today's chat, followed by tonight's Patriots-Bengals preseason game. Should be a nice night for football. Going to gather a few things and then let's roll...

[Comment From DavidDavid: ]
I wouldn't be surprised if the Patriots played mostly in the 3-4 tonight, would you? Will we see Derrick Burgess at OLB?
Thursday August 20, 2009 12:02 David
12:03
Mike Reiss:
I noticed they spent some time working on the 3-4 this week, so it wouldn't surprise me if we see more of it tonight. Not sure they'd do it exclusively, though. I haven't seen Burgess line up in a two-point stance once since he arrived, so I don't expect to see him at OLB in a 3-4 alignment.

[Comment From PatrickPatrick: ]
How about a non-Patriots question - there is a report on espn.com that Matt Cassel's starting job may be in jeopardy in KC and that Croyle is pushing Cassel and may win teh job.
Thursday August 20, 2009 12:03 Patrick
12:03
Mike Reiss:
I was reading about that, but I'm not buying it. They didn't give Cassel all that dough to sit on the bench. He'll be there in Week 1, as the starter, I'm fairly certain of it.

Tully Banta-Cain: Surpise dominating pass rush force this year? I see it happening...
Thursday August 20, 2009 12:03 Juice
12:05
Mike Reiss:
I'd put him on my surprise list in camp. When camp started, I talked about OLBs like Woods, Crable, Redd, and Banta-Cain was No. 4 on the list. He's No. 2 now, passing Redd (released) and Crable. Looks like he can still get after the passer. Also contributes on special teams, so he projects to not only make the club, but also be part of the 45-man game-day roster. Talking to him, he sounds like he learned some valuable lessons in San Francisco.

What is the deal with Holliday and Carter? I read your piece about Carter in today's Globe. Does this mean that the Patriots satisfied with Pryor?
Thursday August 20, 2009 12:05 Nick
12:06
Mike Reiss:
That was Christopher Gasper's piece in the Globe, so all the credit goes to him. They won't be signing Holliday. I think they're interested in Carter, but it sounds like Carter is leaning toward retirement.
Thursday August 20, 2009 12:06 Mike Reiss
12:06
Mike Reiss:
P.S. -- I don't see any connection to Pryor when it comes to Carter/Holliday.

[Comment From MarkJMarkJ: ]
Mike, I always love to see no-name undrafted make the team or the practice squad, and then become solid NFL players (Wood, Wright). How do you rate this years undrafted rookies, and who might be this years' gem?
Thursday August 20, 2009 12:06 MarkJ
12:08
Mike Reiss:
It is a smaller class than past years. WR Terrence Nunn has shown some nice concentration and hands in camp, but it's hard for me to envision him on the roster. QB Brian Hoyer looks sharp too, but I'm not sure he's sharp enough to be on the roster. I see both on  the practice squad. Otherwise, the player to watch, in my view, is first-year  offensive lineman Ryan Wendell, a former rookie free agent. I see him get overpowered at times, but there is something about him that the coaching staff seems to like. I  know he doesn't qualify as a rookie free agent, but I just wanted to mention him because he's not a player we should be sleeping on.

[Comment From Matt, DedhamMatt, Dedham: ]
Mike, to me the weak link on the Pats was the defense last year. Will this year's unit be better and will we have any way of knowing before September 14th?
Thursday August 20, 2009 12:08 Matt, Dedham
12:09
Mike Reiss:
I'm going to say "yes" on the first part, Matt. I just think they have more talent, specifically in the secondary. Have you been to the new P.F. Chang's in Dedham yet?

[Comment From DevinDevin: ]
Went through some youtube's of Burgess in Oakland. He seemed like celebrating his sack was more important than anything, one time dancing around after forcing a fumble and not looking for ball. How do u see him fitting in in NE?
Thursday August 20, 2009 12:09 Devin
12:10
Mike Reiss:
My impressions of Burgess have been quiet professional. I don't see much celebrating, Devin. I think he shows speed and some power off the left defensive edge.   I think his matchup tonight against RT Anthony Collins is one of the top things I want to watch in this game. Should be some good opportunities to get to the passer.

How dumb am I going to look for all the bulletin board material I've handed the Pats if the Jets go 0-2 against NE this year???
Thursday August 20, 2009 12:10 Rex Ryan (The Meadowlands
12:11
Mike Reiss:
I know you don't care about that stuff, Rex, and it's all about creating a loose, let's-have-fun culture with your team. I think you, and your team, will be just fine. From what I understand, that rookie QB of yours has a little something special about him. We'll see how it goes Monday against the Ravens, which will be a good test. I'll be tuned in.

[Comment From ColinColin: ]
Hey Mike, do you think that since the Derick Burgess move that the Patriots have a better pass rush than last year? Basically, do you think Burgess is a step up from Vrabel? Looking at Burgess' stats from last year, it seems to be a lateral move. Keep up the good work!
Thursday August 20, 2009 12:11 Colin
12:12
Mike Reiss:
To my untrained scouting eye, I think Burgess is a better pass rusher than Vrabel. So specific to the pass rush, I see it as a clear upgrade. Yet if you were to ask me "Who is the more complete football player based on how he fits in the Patriots' scheme?" I wouldn't think twice about answering Vrabel.

[Comment From SteveSteve: ]
Who do you see as the sleepers on the O-Line?
Thursday August 20, 2009 12:12 Steve
12:13
Mike Reiss:

I think we'll see all five starters make the club -- Light (LT), Mankins (LG), Koppen (C), Neal (RG) and Kaczur (RT), with Vollmer (swing tackle), Hochstein (C/G/power FB) and Ohrnberger (C/G) the other locks. If they take another player, the top candidates would be O'Callaghan (OT) or Wendell (C/G) at this time. With LeVoir (OT) on PUP, they can build their initial roster knowing he would add depth after Week 6.

Thursday August 20, 2009 12:13 Mike Reiss
12:14
Mike Reiss:

P.S. -- Kaczur would be high on my "Underrated" camp list. He has looked very strong to me. I thought he mauled a couple of Eagles last week. Very physical.

hey mike, with the lac of a true base defense and considering the fact that there are alot of new faces in this years defense, im concerned that with all the mixing and matching BB is doing due to the versitality, maybe our players might have trouble "Gelin" together and finding their specific roles, and thriving as a whole. your thoughts?
Thursday August 20, 2009 12:15 Juan
12:15

I think they'll have a defined base defense, Juan, we just don't know what it is yet. I wouldn't be too concerned about this.

Have the Pats settled on the return specialitst yet?
Thursday August 20, 2009 12:15 Jason in NC
12:16
Mike Reiss:
On kickoffs, Laurence Maroney, Matthew Slater, Julian Edelman, Darius Butler, Terrence Wheatley, Terrence Nunn and Kevin Faulk are in the mix. On punts, it's Edelman, Kevin Faulk, Wes Welker, Joey Galloway and Pat Chung.
Thursday August 20, 2009 12:16 Mike Reiss
12:16
Mike Reiss:
No definitive answers at either spot right now. My guess is Maroney/Slater on kickoffs on opening day, with Edelman back on punts.

[Comment From Matt G. (Boston)Matt G. (Boston): ]
Do you have a last few players in and last few out, with regards to the Pats' bubble players?
Thursday August 20, 2009 12:16 Matt G. (Boston)
12:19
Mike Reiss:
That's a tough one, Matt, because we don't know what the coaching staff is thinking. Going by position, I'd put BenJarvus Green-Ellis (RB), Alex Smith (TE), Ray Ventrone (WR/ST), Tank Williams (LB), Paris Lenon (LB), and Eric Alexander (LB/ST) on the initial list. Smith will probably make it based on the team giving up a 5th rounder for him, but he has yet to emerge. He's also making $1.5m, which is a lot for his projected role. I think Watson ($900,000) is better value at this point, assuming he is healthy.
Thursday August 20, 2009 12:19 Mike Reiss
12:19
[Comment From JoeJoe: ]
With regard to 3-4 v 4-3, isn't it a little overblown to what the "base" defense is? I always see them converting game to game, series to series based on what the opposing offense is giving them anyway.
Thursday August 20, 2009 12:19 Joe
12:20
Mike Reiss:
Last year, I thought they were a little less "multiple" in switching from series to series than we've seen in past years. It was mostly 3-4 in the base, before they got to sub packages. But it's a point well taken, Joe, when also considering that some of the techniques they are playing in the 4-3 are similar to the 3-4.

Mike, thanks for all your great work! Do you envision any surprise/big name cuts from the Pats as we near the beginning of the season?
Thursday August 20, 2009 12:20 Craig
12:21
Mike Reiss:
The team's recent history tells us to expect them, Craig. It's somewhat enjoyable trying to project who they might be. I'm curious about Tedy Bruschi's possible role if the four-man line becomes a more permanent part of their plans.

Thursday August 20, 2009 12:21 Jim in Boston
12:22
Mike Reiss:
I put him on my roster projection last week. Just tough to cut a guy who runs as hard as he does, and I figure he'll get  claimed on waivers if they let him go. With Sammy Morris banged up, and considering the injury history of the Maroney/Morris tandem, I'd keep Green-Ellis.

[Comment From Chris NHChris NH: ]
If Brady stays healthy and the defense improves, which it looks like it has significantly, then i don't see the patriots losing more than 2 games. At teams without Brady and a very shaky defense last year won 11 games, your thoughts?
Thursday August 20, 2009 12:22 Chris NH
12:23
Mike Reiss:
I can understand the optimism. I expect Bill Belichick to consistently remind the team that "11 wins isn't good enough" based on last year. Yet given some of the unpredictable things that can happen, 14-2 is a bit generous in my book. I'd go 12-4.

Thursday August 20, 2009 12:24 nick in new brunswick
12:24

I don't Nick. I could see a scenario in which both Ninkovich and Alexander weren't on the club. In Alexander's case, a big part will be special teams.

I'm trying remember a recent year when it was so tough to decide to to cut in a mock roster! Anyway, what's the story with Bru? Is he out of gas, or do you think he'll have a legit presence on the field in '09?
Thursday August 20, 2009 12:25 Jaws
12:26
Mike Reiss:
I still think he has something to offer a team. My only question, Jaws, is if he gets caught in a bit of  a scheme change. In the 3-4, I think he's valuable as a presence inside, splitting time with Gary Guyton next to Jerod Mayo. But in a 4-3, I don't see where he fits, as he'd be a pure backup to Mayo at MLB. With limited special teams contributions at this point in his career, I wonder where that situation would head if the four-man line is more prevalent.

Mike, one thing that is of interest to many people is seldom discussed -- what do these big guys eat at their three or four meals each day? I heard last week that during the hot weather practices, the OL guys might lose as much as 10 or 12 pounds. All we ever hear is that they drink Gatorade and water. I want to know how many eggs Matt Light eats for breakfast. How many pancakes would someone like Seymour digest at 7 AM? How about it Mike, you must see what goes on between practices at their luncheon facilities. Let us in on it would you? I would love to know who has the biggest appetite on the team? Please answer this one. Not written by me but I'd be interested in the answer...

Chris, my thought is that anything Belichick does on the field in 2009 is strictly with 2009 in mind, not the possible expanded schedule in 2010.

[Comment From Scuba OwlScuba Owl: ]
Mike, I don't think the 09 Pats will top the 07 Pats statistically, but I think they'll be tougher to stop, due to a greater emphasis on tight ends. With tight ends who can block and catch, the running game will be more effective than the one that was stifled that awful February day in 08. And this will make the play-action that much more dangerous.
Thursday August 20, 2009 12:30 Scuba Owl
12:31
Mike Reiss:
Outside of Baker, I'm still curious about the blocking element here. Thomas looks good on the move as a FB, but both he, Smith and DeVree get overwhelmed at times on the line. Tough to assess Watson at this time because he hasn't been on the field.

Why do you think Joey Galloway is having such a difficult time picking up the offense and do we see someone else starting ahead of him in the game opener ie: Nunn or Edelmen. Also things have been quite on the Greg Lewis, Sam Aiken, Matt Slater front - any developments there?
Thursday August 20, 2009 12:32 Ravi (Toronto)
12:33
Mike Reiss:
I'd give Galloway some more time, Ravi, before taking him out of the lineup in favor of another player. I still see NFL-caliber skills there. I thought Lewis, Slater and Aiken have all made their presence felt on special teams, not so much at receiver. Slater has strictly been working at safety from what I've seen, not receiver.

[Comment From SteveSteve: ]
Mike, I have concerns about this defense going forward. In order I believe they are to thin at LB (TBC and Burgess are in effect 1 down players) 1 injury will really back them into a corner and I also think they will struggle applying pressure to the QB (Rodney was their best blitzer and i'm not sure if this can be replaced). On a bright side if Springs is healthy enough to grab that other CB spot I love the mix of youth, speed, and experience. Do you share my concerns?
Thursday August 20, 2009 12:33 Steve

Mike Reiss:
One of the more intriguing battles in camp. It's clear to me that Chris Baker is No. 1. I think David Thomas, with his H-back type role and lining up in the backfield in two-back sets, has had a good camp (his holding penalty aside in the preseason opener). I'd put Thomas on the club right now. So that leaves a battle between Watson and Smith for No. 3 and possibly 4. Do they keep both? Tough one to project. Maybe there is a trade to a team that needs a tight end, like the Bengals.

To my untrained scouting eye, he looks light on his feet and powerful with a quick type of twitch. One example was on Green-Ellis' 17-yard run in the fourth quarter last week. Mike Reiss:
I don't know the answer to this, Tommy Hodson, because I know some of the players go to Patriot Place and eat at some of the establishments there. My sense is that it's lightly monitored.

They pass when Maroney is in the game. Maroney isn't afraid to stick his head in there and mix it up with blitzers.

I think he'll make it, Smitty. It's still early yet. Just as I'd say the hype machine with Julian Edelman could go in the other direction, the same is true for Galloway.

I haven't heard  anything, but my expectation is that he starts the year on PUP and could be back sometime after Week 6. If you look at Belichick-coached teams in N.E., they always seem to have a few PUP guys, and it's a way of creating depth for the middle of the year when you might need it (but don't now). I'd put Tate in that category.

Mike Reiss:
I'm not as hard on you, Ben W. While you didn't become that No. 1 tight end many had projected, I still think you add some value to an offense. The injuries are unfortunate and that is a consideration come roster cuts, but I'd keep you around. At a $900,000 salary, I think you are a better value right now than Alex Smith ($1.5m). I'm curious to see how this plays out. Right now, I'd say no trade.

Count me as impressed when watching the Bills no huddle attack. What do you think will be the main counter to this offense for the pats D. I would think BB would like to substitute as much as possible which is a challenge in itself aganst this offense.

The no-huddle has been the big story in Buffalo this offseason. I'm assuming they have three receivers on the field, so I'd go with a nickel defense and hope the conditioning base built in the offseason and camp pays off.

I'm thinking 1-2 series, depending on the momentum he builds. If he leads the team to a TD on the first drive, I could envision that being it. This is an important time to assess the backups. There are only so many opportunities to do so.

With the proliferation of 3-4 defenses in the league, do you see the move to the 4-3 as a strategic shift for future resources or just as a way to keep teams off balance?

I think it's more based on their personnel. They are deep on the DL, a little thin at LB, so the four-man line plays more to their strengths.

I don't think Morris will play, as he's been out of practice all week. Hopeful to see Fred Taylor, too. Maybe a little less of Maroney than we saw last week. Faulk should get mixed in there. Sounds right with Green-Ellis and Chris Taylor in the  second half.
